The pilot whale is not an endangered species, the humble tuna fish however, is, due to severe overfishing. So. Why is it we never see any nautical hippies doing after fishermen. It's common knowledge that trawlers ruin the eco system of the seabed.

I agree it's a bit hypocritical to condemn people for killing animals, no matter how brutal it may look, for most of us - since most of us eat meat that doesn't grow on trees, obviously. That being said...

Although currently there is much more food produced for people in world than whole human population would needs with large margin, but still we have over billion people that suffer from malnutrition and countries that suffer from consequences of overnutrition and problems caused by wasted food.

There are very  few countries that still hunt whales as it is seen as unnecessary and cruel. Human beings have more of a connection to whales as they are mammals and are seen as much more intelligent and having more sentience than lets say Tuna which is why people condemn whaling more than fishing. Its the same for the killing of dolphins 

 

The practice of hunting whales needs to be condemned, its just not something I am active in

My only rule is that I'll never (knowingly) eat any animal I've ever had as a pet.  With that in mind, that means cats and rats are out, everything else is fair game.  I have no qualms about anybody else eating cats or rats (or any other animal), though, that's their prerogative.

What financial gain is accrued through the whale hunting that the Faroese have indulged in for over a millenia now? Is there prey group of a sustainable population? What other economic prospects will replace the whale hunting if it is profitable? How much of the Faroese economy is based upon this and how many sanctions does it create? Whom will enforce a ban upon the whale hunting? What nation will infringe upon the Faroes sovereign (Danish?) waters to do this? Will the taxpayers of that nation support this foreign intervention?

 

I'd need to know all of these things before I could make an informed opinion.

People whoa re anti hunting hate nature. Humans are animals. We are hunters by nature. We are doing what nature wanted us to do. We are meant to be omnivores. To stick to only a meat diet or only a vege diet is insane and unnatural.

 

That, of course, is not approving of people using the most horrid and inhumane methods to hunt. We should be above such stuff. Even though, in nature, there are animals who seem to get some enjoyment toying with their food/prey.

I meant literally when all other options have been exhausted.  I'll eat grass and bark and dig worms out of the ground to eat before I eat human, but once there is absolutely nothing else and it's down to chomp on human or die of starvation, I would imagine that survival instinct would override any and all moral aversion I have toward cannibalism.

According to Wikipedia, it's not a very commercial thing, as the whale meat is not exported - it goes directly to local households and restaurants. They do this because the terrain of their island does not allow much farming, and importing food to an island is expensive.

 

Is there prey group of a sustainable population?

 

According to the same wiki page, they kill about 0.1% of the population each year, which is most likely sustainable.
