New Real Time With Pause Dungeons & Dragons RPG - SWORD COAST LEGENDS

Here you go Bruce.

While the concept is interesting with the DM and all, I can see how many random DMs will troll people with constant monster/lock/trap spawning. This seems like a game that would work with friends.

Posted

Careful Bruce, you're libel to kick over hornet nest with that question. Looking at the spells and abilities, its clearly using D&D, however the devs are apparently tight lipped on how much (5E) they are using. It has the blessing of WotC so it would seem they cant deviate too far from source. Other posters seem very upset though so I dunno.

Neverwinter Online was also blessed by WotC, and it has absolutely nothing with D&D rules whatsoever!

I am just looking to be entertained but obviously the game must be good...

Amen brother. Although the warm cloak of familiarity (D&D) makes me very excited. I don't even understand the terminology in PoE. For example, this is an excerpt from the strategy guide on a dagger:

Interrupt: 30 (Weak)

Damage: 8-12 Slash vs. Defl ection

Accurate: +5 Accuracy

Exceptional: +8 Accuracy, x1.3 All Damage

What the hell does that Accuracy even mean? Plus 5 out of what, 100? Do those two stack for a total of +13 Accuracy?

What would this be analogous to in D&D terms?

Wheres my pants? laughing.gif

You can find description of Accuracy under your character portrait in Inventory and Character tab. The plus to accuracy means, that this weapon adds all bonuses listed in the weapon description to the Base Accuracy, which is determined by Level, Class, Perception and Talents.

The higher the accuracy, the easier you are able to hit stuff.

In DnD terms the analogy would be Attack Bonus.

Here you go Bruce.

Maybe I missed something, but wasn't there any way for the DM to make the NPC talk? I mean, there was serious potential for bad guy banter, but the bad guy was just instantly hostile.

Honestly, the whole "DM currency" and "DM loot" seemed really strange to me as well. At this point, I don't know that it's even a $5 on Steam buy for me.

Neverwinter Online was also blessed by WotC, and it has absolutely nothing with D&D rules whatsoever!

I don't know the nitty-gritty details of D&D since 2/2.5E but I did play NWO for a while. Was it really not using of D&D that was current at the time?

I don't expect, or want, the games to follow every little detail down to the letter to be considered "official". But I do agree there are some pretty glaring flaws already. Like no missing. The just aggravates me for some reason.

Sounds like an "opportunity cost" mechanic.

You said it "indisputably" doesn't have much to do with D&D. I ask why, you say "see above". I ask if the devs said anything official and you evoke a few minute video and say you don't need to see the rules. Oooookaaaay. Good talk. And yes, I like my games to not have built in suck mechanics.

I described the changes that are confirmable based on the video (not wild speculations), and I explained why those changes fundamentally change the tactical experience of D&D CRPGs, and then gave a comparison to show how the combat experience demonstrated in that video is closer to Dragon Age, Diablo and MMOs than IE games or Gold Box.

"Built in suck mechanics"? Yeah, again, you're unable to separate the issue of "is this game D&D?" with "do I like this game?" Look, you personally don't like many IE mechanics. OK. I like them. OK. None of that is actually relevant to the question, to what extent is this a D&D game? I gave an analysis based on the evidence we have. You can choose to provide a different analysis, or you can, as you have done all this time, say "whatever man if the devs tell me it's D&D it's D&D, if they tell me it isn't it isn't." Commenting every post how the mechanics you don't like suck a lot doesn't prove you right.

POE is again a separate issue. But hey, you're fine with SCL as long as it has something called "Magic Missile" even though it works quite differently from a D&D Magic Missile, right? SO maybe you'd be fine with POE accuracy as long as they called it THAC0. Wait, but you're telling me you don't like POE accuracy because its mechanics are quite different from D&D. Oh, right, just like SCL's Mordekainen's Sword or whatnot have quite different mechanics from D&D...

Posted

Ah, "if it doesn't follow exactly, its wrong, and therefore nothing like the source". Solid. *nods*

And don't get yourself so red in the face. Its ok if I don't like the same things you do.  A D&D-lite experience is right up my alley and if that's what the devs claims to be making then Im ok with that analysis even over your vaunted video watching skills.

So Accuracy is THAC0 or Attack Bonus?

So Accuracy is THAC0 or Attack Bonus?

Accuracy is Attack Bonus (divide by 5 and you get roughly same significance as in D&D, so +5 in PoE is +1 in D&D), Deflection is AC.

Formula for attack rolls [Accuracy - Deflection + d100] in PoE. Iirc, <5 is miss, 6-50 is glancing hit (half damage, which means barely any damage in some circumstances since body armor in PoE has Damage Reduction), 51-95 is hit, and 96+ is critical.

Or in more D&D friendly numbers, total roll of -10 or worse compared to target AC is miss, -9 to -0 is half damage/duration, +1 to +9 is full hit, and +10 and above is crit.

"What about rolling natural 1 or 20 for guaranteed miss or hit?"

What about them?

Well, you do get buff spells and abilities that transform a portion of hits into crits, and there are loads of Deflection lowering and Accuracy buffing skills in game. But on their own, a person with significantly lower accuracy than enemy deflection will never crit, and a person with a lot higher accuracy than enemy deflection will never completely miss. That's one of the big mechanical differences in PoE

This is funny. MMORPG.com posted an interview with 2 of the dev team:

MMORPG.com: The PHB also has nine playable races: Human, Gnome, Elf, Half-Elf, Halfling, Dwarf, Tiefling, Dragonborn, and Half-Orc. Sword Coast only has 5. Which races did you include and will we see additional races down the road as you release modules?

Tudge: At launch, SCL features Dwarf, Elf, Half-Elf, Halfling, and Human races. Again, this decision comes down to our focus on quality and our team discipline with regard to scope. We are planning to release more races post-launch. I know I want to play a Half-Orc, my sons want to play Dragonborn and my wife a Teifling - so we can probably expect to see the Teifling soon after launch!

Someone made a thread about PoE in their forums. One of the developers replied:

If its quiet in here its because we're also playing PoE.

Well I hope they get some good ideas out of these play sessions with PoE and implement them in SCL :p

They had a QA yesterday and said they implemented cooldowns because of MP and because they think they are tactical enough for D&D to replace resting and spell slots. RIP D&D...

This topic should be renamed into Dragon Age: Sword Coast Legends or Cooldowns: the Game.

There will be combat XP, right?

"We have decided to replace 'experience points' with Sword Coast points that can be earned by performing tasks or may also be purchased directly by those with less time and who just want to experience our wonderful story and sensational character upgrade system. We feel that this fits well with D&D's philosophy and with best multiplayer practices"

Well, it is a quote. I said it to myself five minutes ago. But I'll lol fullsomely if/ when it turns out to be true

This looks and feels like the spiritual successor to Neverwinter nights perhaps? I heard it features DM functionality for multiplayer?
