Journalism and sexism in the games industry

But women are oppressed for their feminine parts. They are victims of patriarchal society and should be protected so these depictions of them exploting their femininity must be censored!

But seriously, I agree with you. It's things like this why I hitched my wagon to GG. First and second wave feminists fought long and hard to reclaim their femininity, sexuality and the right not to have to cover up (such as bra burning) and if these women have no problems with modeling topless then they should do so. If they can make money out of the fact that men are obsessed with their bags of fat with nipples (don't get me wrong, I love boobs, but I often wonder why ) then power to them exploiting the stupidity of men (and lesbians, don't want to be heterosexist). How is a woman who is confident and comfortable with her body a negative thing because of how men react to it? What is the difference in "objectification" between a topless model and a model in a bikini anyway? This is just the Muslim argument for Burkas, women must be covered up so men don't get the oppertunity to be awful about it.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-01-20/the-sun-strips-page-three-of-topless-girls/6028872

Another possible  dark day for freedom of choice boys, the Sun newspaper has decided to remove topless pictures of glamour models from page 3 . Various feminist campaigns have raised their concern around how these models were portrayed saying it was sexist and objectified women

Personally I'm not sure if I support this move as I have just watched several  interviews on Sky with various models and they all say they were paid good money to pose in pictures and they considered the pictures tasteful and also that they weren't  feeling objectified in anyway

So the question is " do these models have right to decide if they want to go topless " ....or do we let members of civil society tell them what they should be doing ? You could argue the models don't know what there pictures represent symbolically ...so maybe its not up to them to decide. But its not like its full nudity so I think the models should be able to decide for themselves?

I used to agree with this but after learning that women aren't getting into STEM fields and the ones that do seem to leave their jobs to do porn I agree with the feminist doing something to force women to be better. Not fair that they get to be paid more just to be pretty, once they eliminate those jobs they can stoke the fires by claiming that the pay gap has widened. Very Machiavellian these feminist, they have my respect for it.

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

I caught part of Totalbiscuit's podcast when they were talking about comic books. I am pretty clueless of the comic book world but supposedly years ago a moral outrage of some kind happened and de facto censored mature content from comic books for years to come. Anyone know what they were talking about?

Also another argument I heard this week: Violence against women is "edgy" in the first place because it is not socially acceptable. It is edgy because by definition it is pushing against the boundaries of what's acceptable.

After Yatzee's article on "The PC Gamer Master Race", there has been rumors of people quitting The Escapist, including Greg Tito :o

Also, 4chan is now on life-support:

Thank you for all the memes, raids and endless pool of fun. The torch has now been given to 8chan.

yeah it's quite schizophrenic - we want more womens in games but dont hurt them! Equality my ass

I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think, I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. I'm the kinda guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs with the side-order of gravy fries?" I want high cholesterol! I wanna eat bacon, and butter, and buckets of cheese, okay?! I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section! I wanna run naked through the street, with green Jell-O all over my body, reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly may feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiene"

The entire thing is schitzo. FFS McIntosh and Anita flip their lids if someone criticizes Muslim culture but simultaneously call themselves feminists. How exactly does that even work?

It's the "progressive stack". A white male is mocking the religion of people of color. Thus "punching down". Thus unacceptable.

Yo McIntosh, it's against my religion for the sexy women I hang out with to wear tops. Don't hate or you're oppressing me.

Greg Tito is leaving, but due to budget cuts. It's not just the Escapist, but GameFront and GameTrailers as well. Defy Media, who owns them, slashed a bunch of budgets. It's not related to Yahtzee's article or GG as far as I can tell. Thankfully, the lovely Janelle Bonnano seems to still be EIC of GameFront.

EDIT: Although this article makes a compelling argument that I'm totally wrong:

I thought Gamergate largely left the Escapist alone because they weren't being ****. How is a ton of people getting sacked by "one of the good guys" a victory for Gamergate?

Speaking of the Escapist, how much does Jim Sterling make per month via Patreon?

The justification they would use would be broadly equivalent to Star Trek's Prime Directive. It's fine to influence your own people (The Federation/ The west) because that's done on an equal footing but others must be left to develop as they see fit without outside influence because of an imbalance in power.

It doesn't really work in ST and is very routinely ignored in plot; certainly doesn't work in the real world either, outside of theory. It would be interesting to see if Gene Roddenberry were still alive if he ended up in the extremist SJW fringe, some of his stuff in ST original was genuinely progressive (ie in a good way) but some stuff in TNG ended up being almost parody progressive.

Totally off-topic but gotta admit, the correlation between ridiculous hair dye colors and the inability to use facts, logic and evidence is beginning to seem pretty strong. Maybe somebody should actually research this.

Bonus points for how the title of that video actually does ironically play into the "gamers are sexist!" narrative. xD

About 10k.

Actually, GameFront was part of the same budget cuts and their EiC appeared on TotalBiscuits GG roundtable and was mostly supportive of it. Again, how on earth is this a victory for GG?

I'd wager the Comics Code Authority. Essentially it was a set of standards imposed by an organization funded by the large comic publishers in response to moral panic. The result was censorship of non-CCA approved comics, in that such comics wouldn't be distributed widely and the average reader wouldn't have access to them.

It parallels the current moral panic IMO.
