Tale Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Tale: You'll probably find a cheap PS4 during Black Friday. Not a bad idea, although I work that day. Might be able to get my sister keeping an eye out. "Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."
Bryy Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Me too, and you lucky sods over the pond get to play it three whole days before us old-worlders! It will be an agonizing wait from now on. I know a few people personally that have the game and they say it is one of those rare games that somehow manages to exist in the publisher vaccuum and be flat out amazing in every aspect. 1
WDeranged Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 This game still makes me want a new graphics card even if the reviews have cooled my jets a little. I'm starting to wonder if I should stop reading things before games come out, try and begin with as few preconceptions as possible...but then that could become a bit of an OCD situation where I rabidly avoid all contact with websites and people I like for weeks, bah.
HoonDing Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Stopped caring about it, but I'll casually follow a LP elsewhere. The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.

Bryy Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 I'm going to have to pick my character carefully because nobody on stream wants to see me set up four different characters.
SadExchange Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 I'm getting it for the ps4 as well. Maybe sometime group up to see how the multiplayer is.
Labadal Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 That would be cool. Although my copy will be late because I'm a cheaparse and pre-ordered from an Asian shop and I can expect at least a wait of 7 working days (+ game ships on the 18th).

Think I'll end up going with the regular edition instead of the deluxe. The extra stuff just doesn't seem like that much of a pull. Like you had said previously, it's not like Origins, where there was a hole companion attached to the deluxe edition and since I'm getting the digital version, the soundtrack probably won't matter and the mounts don't seem like too big of a deal for the $10. Anyone else for the PS4 feel the same or am I the odd man out? 1

Nepenthe Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Anyone here getting the PS4 version besides me? My PC can run it on minimum but I'd rather play it on console than have it on minimum settings. Me, I probably couldn't run it even on minimum The few games industry pros I know are taking pot-shots at AssCreed over the review embargo and praising Bio for letting the reviews out this early, btw. (And no, these friends don't work for ubi OR EA)... 2 You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that? Reapercussions
Agiel Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 I believe there were similar pre-release reviews for Mass Effect 3, and from what I remember even from them the impending controversy over the ending was palpable (that said, the part of me that thinks of myself as a fairly level-headed person didn't find it offensive). Quote “Political philosophers have often pointed out that in wartime, the citizen, the male citizen at least, loses one of his most basic rights, his right to life; and this has been true ever since the French Revolution and the invention of conscription, now an almost universally accepted principle. But these same philosophers have rarely noted that the citizen in question simultaneously loses another right, one just as basic and perhaps even more vital for his conception of himself as a civilized human being: the right not to kill.” -Jonathan Littell <<Les Bienveillantes>> Quote "The chancellor, the late chancellor, was only partly correct. He was obsolete. But so is the State, the entity he worshipped. Any state, entity, or ideology becomes obsolete when it stockpiles the wrong weapons: when it captures territories, but not minds; when it enslaves millions, but convinces nobody. When it is naked, yet puts on armor and calls it faith, while in the Eyes of God it has no faith at all. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man...that state is obsolete." -Rod Serling
Labadal Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 I played ME3 only when it became one of the monthly games via PlayStatio Plus and I think the ending was very bad. Did it offend me? Not really. It just felt like Deus Ex: Human Revulsion all over again, only worse. It seemed to me that the ME3 ending made no sense. On the other hand, I didn't enjoy much of the ME3 writing, I kept playing because I enjoyed the combat. (I will buy the next ME game but not because I think they will blow me away with their writing.) I think with the Frostbite Engine, we might not get corridors only like ME2-3.

I dunno why, but for some reason I hated the ME3 ending a lot more than the DXHR ending, even before the DLC added to the DXHR ending. In fact, apart from possibly Throne of Bhaal on some levels, ME3's ending (and the final act in general) were the only time I can genuinely say I've been disappointed by Bioware's work. 1 You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. In fact, apart from possibly Throne of Bhaal on some levels, ME3's ending (and the final act in general) were the only time I can genuinely say I've been disappointed by Bioware's work. DXHR ending made more sense because the themes it conveyed as well as how your character got to that point were well developed and remained consistent. ME3 was a bit all over the place with its themes and the way that they had written the Reapers didn't help. Unknowable horror from beyond space and time doesn't really allow for that many choices. Plus the lead up with those last missions were terrible and for anyone that had played the rest of the games, we were heavily invested to actually accept such a cheap cop-out. 4 I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"* *If you can't tell, it's you.
Tale Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 A big part of ME3's ending problem is in why the players even played the game to begin with. The franchise became known for its strong characters and their interactions, but the ending had **** all to do with that. I could complain more, but it still falls under that line "why were the players there?" It's the expectations one builds. DXHR by comparison doesn't have very strong expectations at least for the ending. One expects conspiracies and cyberpunk. And an ending reflecting choices whether to embrace, reject, or a middle ground. Though perhaps one should rightfully have expected the final mission to differ based on choices. It's middling at best. But it's not completely anathema to why we are there. Dragon Age Origins did fantastically, despite it being able to be summed up in classic dragon slaying tropes, because it kept bringing the characters into the ending. Seeing everyone fight together at Denerim, saying goodbyes (which ME3 did do), getting to make a final choice about characters with who slays the dragon, then if you survive, seeing how those characters intend to go forward, and making choices about that. DA2 did somewhat good with that. You get companion reactions and everyone together (or even against). But I think it was the only good thing about how that game ended. It barely even had an epilogue. 3 "Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."

Enoch Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 It's looking like I'll probably play this at some point, even if it isn't for another 6 months or so. The question being whether I'll jump right in, or do some of the earlier games first. I played DA:O when it was relatively new and really enjoyed about 80% of it. But the late-game gameplay was so repetitive that I only stuck it out to see whether I'd get the option to stab Morrigan in the face. With that option sadly unavailable, I decided that my character was also sick of his existence and had him off himself to end the blight. (I messed around with a few other characters to try out the other origins, but never got close to completing the game a 2nd time.) When Awakenings came out, I was still cool on the gameplay and was generally uninterested in playing a fill-in character with my Warden dead. And, as I said, none of my secondary characters got especially far in the game. So I never bought it (or any of the other DLCs apart from Shale). As I've mentioned elsewhere, DA2's demo convinced me not to buy it initially, and the general community reaction kept me away. Admittedly, if I gave the game a chance, I would probably get used to the awful camera and to letting the AI run my NPCs more than I typically do. And I do find myself growing curious just scanning discussions here and skimming over some of the accounts of the choices that you can make in Keep. Most likely, I'll just mess around with Keep to create the world-state that I find most entertaining. (I'm picturing a wholly self-absorbed Hawke who takes the "whatever is best for me in the extreme short term" solution to every problem-- not a character concept that I would typically play, but as stage-setting for DA:I, it sounds fun.) Still, I am finding myself surprisingly tempted to go through the whole shebang from the beginning.

Enoch Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Oh, I'm certainly no day-1 buyer. I just happened to read a couple reviews and was thinking about eventually playing it. I played ME3 on the 6-month-delay plan, and I think that's the way to go, generally. 1
