Movies you've seen recently

oh just today I watched a bunch of videos about season 6. well, maybe that's a good thing, no one can spoil it now. 

 

Community has been fighting to get renewed every year, so this isn't a huge surprise.  But honestly this seems like a prime candidate for a pickup by Netflix or Amazon.  Considering they've been touting 6 seasons and a movie for years, I'm guessing they have a story arc already fleshed out for a final season.  Still, might be a few years before we see anything.

 

edit:  I guess Hulu has a better shot at getting a season, they have a deal already.

I saw the Wolf of Wall Street. A bit mixed on it. I mean, it was a thrill to follow really, no question there. At the same time, I think the whole showcase of excess gets to be a bit much at times. I know it's a dark comedy and all but it still felt like they were really shoving it down the audience's throats a lot of times. Gets tiresome.

 

Though I must say that Leonardo Dicaprio was *extremely* good in this. Really nailed the sleazy, psychopathic "businessman" with no morals whatsoever.

Indeed. The Kingdom of Heaven DC is one of my favorite movies.

It makes sense. The theatrical cut was broken and nonsensical because they made Scott cut out too much. Only when I watched the directors cut did the movie seem complete.

Scott being forced to cut too much seems like a paradox to me. The guy is pretty notorious for putting pacing above even storytelling in terms of what gets cut.

 

His "director's cut" of Alien, for example, is actually shorter than his preferred theatrical cut. And then there's the rumors around Prometheus.

The difference between two cuts is 50 minutes of added material!

 

Studios generally hate to put movies longer than two hours in the theater and will exert pressure on the director to keep around that length. The DC of KoH is 194 minutes, completely unacceptable for a theatrical release, unless you're Peter Jackson or something.

those aren't just rumors. I saw the deleted scenes, in a review of a restored version of Prometheus. and those scenes actually fill in the gaps in the story and character development that were so abundant in the theatrical release. 

 

so he (or the crazy editor) did remove important scenes to cut down on screen time

As stated, it adds like 40-50 minutes of content, all of it making the film much better. Adds more back story to the characters which makes their actions make much more sense. (Balian was an engineer for the French army, which is why he knew how to build complex irrigation systems and such for example.), Eva Green's character has a son, who would be the heir to Edward Norton's character, and how that is dealt with is rather important. That entire storyline wasn't in the theatrical. Basically its just a much better and more complete film. Its also like $10 on blu-ray.

hm, as they say in Russia, "I don't deal in **** so I wouldn't know". and, yes, the whole Dogme 95 shtick is lost on me, I don't like art-house movies to begin with, because they defy everything I like cinema for

 

well, his earlier work was very fine, I'll give him that. but since Melancholia came out he's been making movies that are pretty much unwatchable: pace is borked, lots of inconsistencies, his message gets lost in all the noise... meh. he's lost to me as a director 

I'll be the first to admit that I'm too dumb to get half the allusions he plays on, but it's different. There is enough samey boring movie making going on.  Did he bridge the gap between porn and 'art', I dunno. It's a bit much though, I would feel awkward watching Nymphomaniac in most company.

For a fan-made trailer, it was ok. It captured the feeling of the original, despite groriousu engrisu.

 

However, instead using the ost from Deus Ex, why not use the vastly superior original score?

I'm usually pretty mellow about this stuff, but bleep hollywood for raping one of the best children's books ever written.

 

I taught The Giver for a number of years.  It was a fantastic way to get my 7th graders to examine their society and different forms of governmental control.  Now if I ever teach it again, I'll have to fight this dang movie adaptation.

 

It seems to have entirely too much color.  Grrr

Saw a number of peak performances in one film today. From actors, photography, costumes, writing, you name it.

 

Spike Jonze's her stunned me into silence, made me laugh, cry, and feel better knowing people deal with fear and love pretty much the same. Amy Adams is an effortless delight, as is Rooney Mara, somehow expressive and withdrawn at the same time. Olivia Wilde is still my girl, and her scenes were shot in a way not hard to imagine being there, with a true babe, getting slightly drunk at a swank, future-LA dig. Joaquin and Scarlett ... you have to see it to really believe it. Such a unique story, it's hard to convey.

 

The science-fiction element is well-implemented, and I never felt disappointed with plot direction. Some excellent comedy, too, unexpectedly well-timed. Color, costumes, and the style of Los Angeles in the "slight future" were great ... double-length trouser flies and all. Blu-ray extras are limited (no commentary), but are good quality and feel more like extensions of the film.

The Lego Movie. I grew up with Lego and I still design and build large models from Lego bricks from time to time, so I totally got all the intelligent jokes and self-mockery in the movie. Things most people with little Lego experience would sadly miss or wouldn't understand. 

It was beautifully animated, everything, I mean EVERYTHING in the movie was made with bricks, even the crashing waves of the ocean, the clouds and the smoke and fire from explosions. If you were crazy enough you could build every damn scene in the movie with bricks. 

 

It was a fun and clever movie, I liked the surprising plot reveal / twist at the end and it managed to make me laugh a couple of times. Went in with a grin and by the time the credits rolled my grin had grown by 200%.

A few months ago I was checking out my old lego stuff with my nephew. It's amazing how much I have forgotten over the years. And damn, searching bricks & putting stuff together is actually *a lot* work, which I did daily back in the days.

 

Anyway, I was hooked up a bit again and bought custom parts and shizzle, so I could build this thing and it looks awesome.
