Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Sort of meh. Wish they would have worked in more character interaction and reduced some of the action scenes. Not sure what to think of the Rhino.

Also Sorophyx. there is a TV thread for TV shows. Not sure why you keep posting TV shows in the movie thread.

 I thought that thread was about TV news and reality shows, since I don't have a TV at home, TV series don't associate with TV in my mind

talk about a misleading thread title

It may be because I saw Spider-Man 2 and Winter Soldier back-to-back but the thing I liked about ASM2 was that it did seem to be mostly about character interaction with relativity few but spectacular action scenes. Rhino wasn't in the movie long enough to be properly developed but I think they've handled the character pretty well so far. He's probably not an easy character to do well in live-action.

Don't feel too bad, we used to have specific threads devoted to shows, and I think that was a better format.  For example, the LOST thread was simply epic.  If it was in a general thread, it would get lost among the shuffle.

Sony have confirmed they're going to make a Sinister Six spin-off movie, as in a movie where the SS are the viewpoint characters, how does that even work???

I think ASM2 hints at a couple of ways they could take it.

I was thinking more along the lines of how do you structure a story around six villains doing villainy things. Usually it's about the hero reacting to a threat and trying to identify, find and stop the villain. So even though there have been movies in the past with the villains as the viewpoint character, as far as super hero movies go assuming you don't count Dr. Horrible or the Monarch episodes of the Venture Bros. (a Monarch movie would be great btw) then Sony are basically inventing a new genre as they go which is kind of exciting. All this is assuming that all of the Sinister Six will actually be true villains through-and-through, there was a rumour about it being a redemption story.  I'm really curious about how it's going to turn out.

Just watched the 4 hour "censored" version of Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac. And it was excellent (if one likes the way Von Trier makes movies like I do). Thoughtful, provocative, depraved, interesting.... Now waiting for the 90 minutes longer directors own version (he didn't take part on the cutting of this "international" version).

It's quite excellent -- Gonna get up on writing my thoughts on it and Melancholia too. I recommend you watch The FIve Obstructions if you love Lars von Trier's way of film-making and is genuinely fascinated by the whole concept of artfilm & film-making.

holy crap, if Nymphomaniac is excellent in your world, I'm glad I'm not part of it (your world, that is).

I won't call it a piece of ****, but it is a piece of ****

An excellent piece of ****. Von Trier's movies tend to divide people pretty starkly.

I'm actually not surprised to hear that opinion either -- Dogmefilm doesn't sit right with everyone -- especially Trier's, where Antichrist is probably the one film that had the widest divided critical acclaim. What i like about Trier is that he's a provocateur, and he utilizes his actors to the fullest because he's in complete control of them, there's no room for improv acting in his house, and if he's feeling sick or something's not working out then he has the gall to send the actors home no matter who they are. He litterally smashes the whole concept of commercialism -- For those expecting another Antichrist, what was most surprising about Melancholia was its patient pacing, its introspection, and, most of all for von Trier, its focus on a family characterized by bourgeois comforts. In his appropriation of what can seem at first a relatively commercial aesthetic, von Trier gradually, rather than instantaneously, allows the superficial beauty of such images to erode away and reveal the emptiness at their core.

hm, as they say in Russia, "I don't deal in **** so I wouldn't know". and, yes, the whole Dogme 95 shtick is lost on me, I don't like art-house movies to begin with, because they defy everything I like cinema for

well, his earlier work was very fine, I'll give him that. but since Melancholia came out he's been making movies that are pretty much unwatchable: pace is borked, lots of inconsistencies, his message gets lost in all the noise... meh. he's lost to me as a director

Can't say I agree at all -- As a film-nerd and narrative student I find art-film to be what makes cinema so darn interesting a subject to work with. Where the film-maker gets free reign and often experiment with either genre-film, camera methods, narrative structure etc. I think it's something most film-students love, at least of those I know, and it's also the reason why film-noir is still a relevant genre to work with. Heck, it's the best part about anything involving complex storytelling -- it's about weaving new ideas together to provide unique ways of story presentation. The strong emphasis placed on the authorial expressiveness of the director; and a focus on the thoughts and dreams of characters, rather than presenting a clear, goal-driven story -- I love that. It's also why I've adored some flicks by Lynch or Former Python Terry Gilliam, while both director's works aren't all quality, they represent those occasional gems that move away from the boundaries of mainstream garbage. I find that international film tends to lean most towards the workings of the experimental, and thus as a result I tend to scour French, Danish, English & Italian shown at Cannes or Berlin Festival, for the occasional diamond hidden within.

oh, another name that makes me shudder whenever I hear it, David Lynch  Twin Peaks is probably the best TV series ever, but some of his other work really confuses me. Mullholland Drive is a good example...

now, to give you an idea: Werner Herzog - there's a director who knows his stuff, his work is excellent.

and then there's Michael Haneke, some of his films are simply amazing. Trier has nothing on these two

I think the brilliance of Mullholland Drive lies in the puzzle of trying to understand it -- Some interpret it through dream analysis, to explain that the first part is a dream of the real Diane Selwyn, who has cast her dream-self as the innocent and hopeful "Betty Elms", reconstructing her history and persona into something like an old Hollywood movie.

The idea is that the character of Betty is an projection of the happy life that Diane could be living.

Another theory indicates that Betty and Rita and Diane and Camilla may exist in parallel universes that sometimes interconnect. Or alternatively, that most of the film is sequence of dreams, an argument made based on the subtle references to sleep, such as shots of beds & bedrooms. I'd argue though that the film sets itself up so well that the hunt for its meaning becomes intriguing, and all precedented theories could hold truth to it all, and thus makes it watchable again.

Watching Mr Scott's latest editing of Blade Runner and i'm still split on why he feels it is undoubtable that Deckard is a Replicant. He is stubborn, tenacious and logical but he does not seem to be as intelligent as the Genetic Engineers who created him. As for his physical presence, there's no doubt that Harrison is in good shape, but surely a Replicant made to catch others would have similar or even better specifications than even Roy, and certainly be able to deal with Priss and Leon.

I simply don't buy it, and prefer the uncertainty of D*ck's original novella, though generally I think the film is better.

Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? That's what it is to be married with children.

I've seen things you people can't even imagine. Pearly Kings glittering on the Elephant and Castle, Morris Men dancing 'til the last light of midsummer. I watched Druid fires burning in the ruins of Stonehenge, and Yorkshiremen gurning for prizes. All these things will be lost in time, like alopecia on a skinhead. Time for tiffin.

I'm psyched for the new Apes flick, hope it does well and we get to see this team's version of the original.

I sometimes wonder if Ridley Scott had any idea what his movie was about. Blade Runner is one of my favorite films, I've watched it many times, including the new cut. The core of the story only makes sense if Deckard is a human: the idea that an android could learn the meaning of forgiveness and humanity - that which the human protagonist forgot is the "soul" of the movie, the culmination of the cautionary tale that is BR,

If Deckard was a replicant all that is thrown out in favor of one of those stupid plot twists you might find in a Spanish soap opera: "and then he found out he's his own father" indeed *snort*.

I think he's just muddying the water to keep the controversy going. I can't take him seriously when he says Deckard is a replicant, its too pointless and too stupid.

I can't take him seriously post BR either, because he hasn't made a single thing worth a damn - and Prometheus is possibly the worst film I've seen in my life.

Ridley Scott is frustrating, because he is a good director that for some reason insists on directing movies from extremely terrible scripts. Sometimes it works, Alien was a great version of the awful Starbeast script. Sometimes it doesn't work, like when Robin Hood just doesn't tell a story good enough to justify its existence.

Bad news by the way Sorophx, Community got cancelled.

My problem with ASM2 ultimately boils down to that there are some fantastic scenes, but they feel out of place and the pacing is rushed. IMO, it would have been a huge improvement if Harry had gotten the "cure" relatively early on and had slowly deteriorated into the Goblin, Electro would have had more hallucinations to showcase his instability, the "German torture doctor" would have been cut, and more screen time had been given to Peter and Gwen or Peter and Harry interactions. YMMV.

Not sure where they are going with the Rhino, but I felt it was a bit too overtly comedic. I think Rhino works as comic relief as he is a dumbass and does look pretty stupid), but it felt too over-the-top in the film.

Big heist film? Certainly wouldn't be that far-fetched. I'm more concerned about venom myself, because that isn't something that can be easily worked into a movie, IMO.
