Serrano Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 (edited) I didn't see your post before the edit but I really did find the explanation Enoch gave to be a good read if that;s what you were getting at, I was worried I would still come across as sarcastic but I wasn't intending to. Enoch Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 This is a pretty good indication of how the entertainment industry values their own products: http://www.nme.com/n...s-artists/63944 They demand 72 trillion dollars from Limewire (whatever the hell that is) for 11000 illegally downloaded songs. The entire wealth of the world is 60 trillion dollars.. I do not condone piracy, but when entertainment companies calculate how much money they have lost due to illegal downloading.. Well, let's just say that they're not employing any Nobel prize winning mathematicians. And, update: It's a bogus old story. If the basic statement sounds familiar, it's because the RIAA member labels did make an extreme request on damages last year in the Limewire case, suggesting that every single download should be subject to statutory damages, which could, under some circumstances (basically willful infringement) reach up to $150,000 per download. As we (and many other sites) reported in March of 2011, Judge Kimba Wood rejected that claim.... Someone, however, did a back of the envelope calculation based on downloads and tossed out that $72 trillion number, and it caught on widely... again, way back in March of 2011.... Anyway, a year ago, in May of 2011, Limewire famously (or so we thought) settled the case for $105 million. That case is basically over.
213374U Posted May 26, 2012 Posted May 26, 2012 Well, let's just say that they're not employing any Nobel prize winning mathematicians. That figures. There is no Nobel Prize for Mathematics. Rumor has it good ol' Alfred was pissed at some mathematician for scoring with some girl he had a crush on or something equally apocryphal. (Come on, Obsidian! you should have spotted that one instantly. I am disappoint.) - When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.

Hurlshort Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 Brilliant read. Do you sit outside in the cold while everyone shares in the latest "cultural event"? That is a ridiculous article. Seriously. I mean, I'm kind of hoping he is lampooning the whole piracy issue, because his points are not smart. I'm pretty sure I've seen better attempts at justification here on this forum.
WDeranged Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 I think you might be missing the point behind the ridicule, everyone you ever met is dehumanised into a "pirate" by one leviathan organisation or another, we're all tacit supporters of the drug trade or terrorism because all of us have copied something.
Orogun01 Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 I thought we supported the drug trade and terrorism by paying taxes, you mean I need to pirate to make sure my money is going to terrorist? alanschu Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Still love that guy that said a common response to why people pirate is pretty much "because I can" on top of the more inane intellectual right to have that stuff for free. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
Malcador Posted September 23, 2012 Author Posted September 23, 2012 Well, it's honest, heh. Why has elegance found so little following? Elegance has the disadvantage that hard work is needed to achieve it and a good education to appreciate it. - Edsger Wybe Dijkstra
Grimlorn Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 (edited) I think piracy is good because it means that developers have to actually create good products if they want people to buy them and this is difficult to tell at face value when it comes to digital products like games without testing them out. I would say most people who pirate games will pay for them if they enjoy them and think they're a good product, but there are also others who will play through a game they enjoy and not buy. But usually that is because they don't have disposable income to purchase it anyways and wouldn't buy it regardless, so no lost money there. Edited September 26, 2012 by Grimlorn
Hurlshort Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 So how do you think the people that create the games feel about that?
