Raithe Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Okay.. Health and Safety run amok. A guy face down in a duck pond. Two police cars, an ambulance, and a fire truck.. and none of the people would go into the pond to recover the guy.. they had to wait for the underwater specialists to get the body out for health and safety reasons. Along with the comment that "he wasn't moving so it was assumed he was already dead and there was no need to rush in to get him out." The duck pond at its maximum depth was about 3 foot. And the man in it was known to have had a brain injury that caused him to collapse at times. What on earth has happened to the emergency services? Azdeus Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 What does electric power and machinery have to do with cleaving firewood? Basically. Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. Enoch Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 (edited) I like my solution better. Don't underestimate the calisthenic, cathartic, and theraputic effects of repeatedly hitting something as hard as you can with a very large axe, and then seeing it split in half. That's about as satisfying as physical labor gets. Edited March 17, 2011 by Enoch

That's about as satisfying as physical labor gets. Could'nt agree more! Problem is when you have several tonnes of it to do, and relatively little time. And now that the damn thing broke a couple of hours ago, I've got to do it with an axe most likely anyway - wich is annoying in itself since I've got no option now. I want teh kotor 3 Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 Off to Philadelphia for the week, visiting UPenn. I look forward to the tender ministrations of the American airport security. Come to Brown; we have... brownies. In 7th grade, I teach the students how Chuck Norris took down the Roman Empire, so it is good that you are starting early on this curriculum. R.I.P. Raithe Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 Got a vet's appointment for the cat on monday. The fact that he's suddenly started humping the daylights out of any orange plastic carrier bag seems a little strange. He doesn't care about bags from Tesco's..but those orange ones from Sainsbury's he goes nuts for. "Cuius testiculos habeas, habeas cardia et cerebellum."

BicycleOfDeath Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Ripping what's left over in my CD & Vinyl library to MP3. Deactivated my Facebook account. Currently doing two months worth of laundry. Installing Lubuntu on my spare laptop. It's gloomy out. I'm not in the best of moods but it's motivating me to get stuff done. Afterwards I'll probably play CoD:MW2 till I pass out. Though, ripping vinyl to MP3 takes quite a while. Stand Your Convictions and You Will Walk Alone.
Syraxis Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 I bought a nose hair trimmer, doing so made me feel older than I am.
Malcador Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Had some random **** drive up and laugh at the fact my dachshunds are "weiner dogs" and that "man I wish I brought some buns" . Walsingham Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Great week for work, last week. Hoping this one will be as good, and nursing a hangover from yesterday's celebration. Why in God's name do I insist on drinking hobgoblin beer when I know it gives me a head like a waste paper basket the next day? Note: that is beer of the brand name hobgoblin. Last week wasn't excellent because I was able to make transdimensional contact with some fantasy world and stole a lot of their booze. "It wasn't lies. Raithe Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 There has been large amounts of cleaning things up and shifting things around.. in preperation for this alsation puppy in a short while.. Now the evenings in and I'm just having one of those spacey times where I can't really figure out what I'm in the mood to deal with or dabble in. Enoch Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 So, a good hunk of my job involves providing legal advice to accountants. I am not an accountant.* However, in an effort to better understand what the heck they're talking about (my chief primer on financial statements came courtesy of the original Railroad Tycoon), I got it into my head to sign up for one of the internal training courses for these accountants with whom I work. I am beginning to think that this was a mistake. * I did, however, prepare my own tax return this past weekend. I need to adjust my withholding-- we're getting way too much money back.
I want teh kotor 3 Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 we're getting way too much money back. Would you rather get less money? Enoch Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 (edited) we're getting way too much money back. Would you rather get less money? Yes. A tax return means that you've been overpaying the government in your payroll deductions. The return is just you getting that money back, free of interest. (Not that interest rates are particularly remunerative for savers at the moment, but that's beside the point.) I'd prefer that they never took that excess money to begin with, rather than provide a voluntary interest-free loan to the Feds. Of course, they don't make that easy-- IRS knows that it gets the strongest tax compliance when taxpayers over-withhold, and thus have an incentive to file their returns, so they engineer the withholding categories to achieve that end. The problem in our case is that I last filled out a W-4 before we became homeowners. Switching to itemized deductions and deducting those fat mortgage interest and property tax payments made our tax liability much lower than it would be under the basic W-4 calculation based our personal exemptions + standard deduction. You can alter your W-4 based on estimated itemized deductions, but IRS doesn't make it easy. Edited March 22, 2011 by Enoch

Raithe Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I'm growing paranoid. It's been the third time in recent days that I've been out running errands around the village..and had a group of students wolf-whistle at me..
