WILL THE ALMIGHTY
Link I didn't play X-Com, but I know a lot of people here did, and I can't imagine they're too happy about it. "Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"
Tigranes
Never played Xcom myself, but I don't see why they have to dig at the corpse of an old dead franchise if they're going to change the core gameplay. Make a new franchise, make a shooter, make it good. The only reason to call it Xcom is money-grubbing. Magister Lajciak
I did play X-COM and what an awesome classic franchise it was! Based on the little blip in Kotaku, however, the new eponymous game does not interest me. I am not really opposed to them reusing the name of the franchise and stealing some of its lore, but they probably shouldn't expect fans of the classic franchise to buy the game on that basis given that it will be a completely different genre of game altogether. Killian Kalthorne
As long as the XCom laws of physics applies all is good. Morgoth
This is awesome news (and probably the worst kept secret ever). Xcom setting = win FPS = win 2K Marin = win Seriously guys, did you really think they'd make a TB strategy game in these days? But I thought 2K Australia would work on Xcom. What are those lazy bastards up to anyway? Edited April 14, 2010 by Morgoth Rain makes everything better.

Morgoth
Seriously guys, did you really think they'd make a TB strategy game in these days? Hello. Civ is a notable exception, because Sid Meier and crew are well known, plus they have a huge and loyal fanbase, so they can afford to make these kind of games. XCOM can NOT! Deadly_Nightshade
Meh. I would have liked a turn-based game like the originals, and wasn't that impressed by BioShock 1 or 2, so I'll be passing on this. "Geez. It's like we lost some sort of bet and ended up saddled with a bunch of terrible new posters on this forum." -Hurlshot

Would you prefer Elemental instead? It's not impossible to create a turn based game in this market, but it would take more work to create and market successfully than another FPS would. Hell Kitty
The only reason to call it Xcom is money-grubbing. Why create a new IP when they have the Xcom (X-com/XCOM/X-COM/WHATEVER) property that isn't being used? BECAUSE THEY WANT TO GET THEIR HANDS ON YOUR MONEY! I hate it when businesses want to make money. I hate it when they use IP they own, ESPECIALLY when it's to create something I'm not particularly interested in. GreasyDogMeat
They already made a X-Com third person shooter and space combat sim game, so why the crying about a FPS?
Morgoth
What really counts is the developer and it's skills. The 2K (Irrational Games) family has proven several times that they're masters at crafting brilliantly designed FPS. Xcom? Never played any of those, but from the looks of it it seems to be pretty cool. Aliens trying to turn humans into toast is always fun. Rain makes everything better. WorstUsernameEver
Changing it from a TBS to a FPS... ...is the only logical conclusion to be succesful these days. There was really no need to resurrect a dead franchise for a succesful FPS though, not to mention that Turn Based Strategy Game still exist and still make profits. @GreasyDogMeat : Wasn't THAT in fact, the reason why the franchise died in the first place? Perhaps, but you could say the same (or very similar) for Fallout 3. A well received franchise gets crummy side story games that deviate from the original, series appears dead and is later revitalized in a very different style than the originals with the only disapointed gamers being the hardcore fans of the original. I'm guessing this new XCom is going to go through a similar experience. Hardcore XCom fans will scream that it is 'XCom in name only' yet the game will sell like hot cakes and receive high ratings from reviewers and 'average gamers'. Then again... the game could turn out to be utter trash hated by all. Too early to tell.

Kissamies
Seriously guys, did you really think they'd make a TB strategy game in these days? Think? No. Wish? Yes. I don't think an X-COM fps is a totally impossible concept, but it's sure hard to create the great atmosphere of the first game with that format, and if it ain't got the atmosphere, it might as well be some other game. Anyways, there has been enough "spiritual successors" by Eastern European developers so I'm not exactly hungry for a tactical TBS anyways. Isn't there a new Jagged Alliance in the works as well?
