E3 developer walkthrough video

Recommended Posts

I like how Mike is behind cover, running in and out, shooting a guy. Then he comes back, slows down time, shoots the next guy, gets back behind the cover, right? And then he just sets "evade" to on and the only remaining enemy goes COMPLETELY RETARDED and moves in the OPPOSITE DIRECTION.

Classy.

I don't post if I don't have anything to say, which I guess makes me better than the rest of your so-called "community." 8)

I'll be honest, I didn't like what I saw... I guess Conviction is more the type of game I'm looking for. I'll still definitely give this game a try, it'll probably be fun.. just not what I expected. I don't like the crosshair, the bit with the invisibility, and the hand to hand. Just my 2 cents.

Well, honestly, SC already looks to have a major upper hand on this game from a gunplay/stealth/polish/production values perspective SC won't, however, have a non-Tom Clancy storyline written by the Obs staff, nor will it have AP's (hopefully) awesome choice & consequence.

It's really too bad, with the games being released in a narrow timeframe, since AP will get an unfavorable comparison next to SC in those areas. However, they chose to make the actual gameplay action/stealth-oriented, so they either need to up their game or take the flak for it. Unfortunately, I have a feeling the game will be treated as the poor man's action/stealth game. It needs to expand beyond that and offer lots more tactical options, starting with lots of wacky gadgets. Lockpicking/hacking minigames doesn't inspire much, either. I don't think the game deserves a free pass 'because' it's an RPG, and should be called out for having substandard gameplay if that's what it ends up having. Then again, that's exactly what Mass Effect managed, and people are excited about ME2, so we'll see how people receive AP.

Obs needs to show off the RPG/C&C elements more, otherwise they WILL draw negative comparisons to SC, or other weird ones I've heard, like Uncharted 2 and Call of Duty and Gears of War :/ Show more dialogue, more character interaction, more branching C&C, more warring factors. Stop showing Thornton sneaking around in his silly crouching animation and shooting things and playing minigames.

Agreed. This game obviously can't even come close to the likes of SP - Conviction in terms of graphic and animation, so I believe OE should really focus on showing the things this game's good at. Show us how the customization of equipment is handled, how the interface works, and, for God sakes, show us some more dialog. These latest videos made the game look like some cheap shooter with some tiny RPG elements thrown in. I get more excited watching a random Mass Effect gunplay video than I do watching your E3 videp presentation.

Just how I feel. I want to feel different but I just can't... I need to see more of this game's other qualities before I can refill my excitement fluid tank.

Oh, and I almost forgot: some PC gameplay videos (I would like to know if the movement looks more fluid when one is using the mouse&keyboard) would've been nice, but I guess we won't see that anytime soon.

Oh, don't get me wrong.. the game looks fun and I still want to play it. It's just that I expected the hand to hand to be...cooler? and I don't really like the cone of fire style crosshairs. That's really the main issues I have with the game. The invisibility thing can be avoided. The dialogue system looks great, as does the entire concept of the game. I'm just saying that I was kind of expecting a realistic but in a fun way (a la MGS4. Not trying to compare the two, but I'm saying I thought the style would be the same.) But it turns out it's going for a more arcade style.

My only problem was the AI. I'm guessing it was on super easy mode. The enemies can't and shouldn't be THAT forgiving. I heard a lot of people complaining again about this game. I would like to address these complaints.

Complaint: Splinter Cell has much better action/stealth elements than AP and the trailer for Conviction really got me inclined towards it.

Answer:  Reeeeeeeeeeeally? You mean that an action/stealth franchise with a great number of games behind it has better action/stealth elements than the first ever RPG to try and utilise them both? Preposterous!

Complaint: Sam Fisher is a lot more badass than Mike.

Answer: Yes, I ... see your point. A veteran stealth/guns/martial arts specialist looks more badass than a mid twenties CIA agent on his first mission. Clearly a fault on the game designers part *nods*

Complaint: Halo 3's action and Gears of War's action was better than AP's. It's just too RPG-ish for me.

Answer: *gasp* An RPG whose action part is too RPG-ish? STOP THE PRESSES, GET ME THE PRESIDENT ON THE PHONE AND ARM THOSE SATELITES READY TO NUKE FROM ORBIT! I'M GETTING TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS!

As you can see, my faith is humanity has been lost. Again. Luckily for me, I see the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse passing by my window. Think I'll go say hi!

I don't remember every post, but wasn't the point that since the two games are released almost the same month, people will buy the one with more sophisticated action?

Not that I care what others buy (can't do much about it, so..)

My complaint is the Artificial Stupidity too btw.

"It"s a RPG lol" is a horrible defense. If you're going to show average stealth and combat in 90% of your videos, the comparisons will be made, and they will not be favorable. Don't try to mimic another genre (poorly) if you can't take the flak.

That's an argument against cross-genre games then, since a game which focuses on only one thing will generally do it better for a number of reasons. Personally I prefer the cross-genre approach, as I find most one trick ponies boring and repetitive.

Marketing certainly isn't doing a good job at it. Hey guys, here's footage of Thorton sneaking around and shooting people, then getting close and punching them! LOL that has horrible animations, the sneaking and shooting looks stupid LMAO! You guys don't get it - it's a RPG; btw, here's more footage of Thornton shooting and sneaking and punching! The shooting and sneaking and punching actually looks pretty bad. It's a RPG - you don't get it, man, you don't get it.

Prove it. AP's not going to sell itself. I don't remember Deus Ex having this problem.

I didn't like the action part of the SC series. Actually, I never liked the SC series at all. Probably that Tom Clancy guy writting it had something to do with it. I don't remember if it was Conviction that said it would utilize a 'blend in with the crowd' mechanic, use objects on the scene, like a someone's laptop and stuff like that. It all seems too focused on the action, though, and the Tom Clancy story really doesn't work for me. It bores me. I'd rather play ANY MGS game over Conviction. Or any Tom Clancy game to be honest.

Conviction was first announced like 3-4 years ago? People forgot about it. But it was already developed to a stage and a lot of polish has been added since then. AP is a totally different game compared to what it looked like 4 or 3 or even 1 month ago. There are 5 more months ahead to improve the game's looks. People who've bothered looking up the previous AP videos, and a lot of people have and so they mention, the game's improvement is more than obvious. I don't know if the action part will be on par with Conviction by the time of release, but even if it's just close, it's gonna be a great success for Obs.

Like I said though, nothing really bothered me except the AI. Animations looked a little clunky? Yeah, maybe, but that's going to be fixed soon. Yeah, I didn't like the minigames too, but ... well, I guess you have to do something. I really like the way the game is.

Making it more like SC isn't necessarily a good thing for it, and, yes, I know this is gonna sound bad, but it IS an RPG. If someone makes a game about going up to your neighbor and saying 'Hey, Bob' and then rolls credits, it isn't much of an RPG, but if you need to get past 50 infantry units, 15 armored tanks, 5 aircrafts and 1 aircraft carrier, just to reach Bob and say hello, screw it then! I'd rather the short version.

If after playing AP, all you have in mind are the combat sequences, THEN it will have failed. But that's just me.

Last I heard he didn't even care it existed, let alone wrote it's story.

Isn't the CGI trailer they released a few days ago intended to address exactly this issue? It focuses quite clearly on the opportunities the game presents to make interesting choices.

Maybe, but it tells rather than showing.

The Conviction we saw a couple years ago is not the same game we saw at E3 this year.

Which probably explains why we haven't seen anything about it the past 4 years. Point taken! >_<

But I never cared for SC to actually bother.

I don't really care, it has his name on it and that's good enough for me, damnit!

Finally saw it. Looks awesome, but yeah, the AI is a worry.

The main thing that pisses me off is actually the sequence where they're demonstrating cover (just before chain shot) - it really reminds you of Fallout 3, the way you stay in cover and they all come running to you one by one. If your'e going to implement cover in your game then you need the AI to understand the concept of covering fire and flanking. One without the other just ends up in silly istuations.

I was just on Gametrailers and Conviction seems to be coming out June 30th. That's ... that's not the same month. Unless AP is just around the corner.

Whoops, misread 6/30/2009 for 8/30/2009, my bad.

So Conviction is due out in just a few weeks? Something tells me the release date on Gametrailers is wrong.

Think so, too. Last I hared was something like towards the end of 2009, which seems far more realistic to me.

I'll probably get both games anyway.
