Obsidian making Fallout: New Vegas

If they drop VATS, it will just be a cheap and boring Stalker clone. Unless of course they also drop the firs person view, but I don't think Beth is gonna like that.

Well, the real question is how much feedom is Obsidian going to have?

Though I feverntly hope otherwise, I don't believe Bethesda would allow them to drop VATS. Best we can probably hope for is more of a redesign to make it more challening and fun. I know Josh has thoughts about VATS and what would make it better.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

Absolutely true! Um, except a Fallout game with complex quests and dialogue, no randomly generated areas, set in a wild west casino town, has absolutely nothing to do with Stalker. Oh and did you get the memo? Stalker didn't invent the FPS-RPG hybrid genre.

Since when is STALKER an FPS-RPG hybrid? That's one memo I didn't get.

Stalker was an RPG?

I took Stalker as an example because it also features a destroyed world. It's basically a FPS, and Fallout without VATS is also basically a FPS (combat wise).

It seems that John Gonzalez is the lead creative designer on Fallout: New Vegas.

Is that confirmed? And who is this gentleman actually?

hmmm... he was the former creative lead on the Aliens RPG.

STALKER is more of an immersive crpg than FO3 on its best day. WHich is pretty sad.

@hurlie: I think VATS hurt the realtime combat because the combat was balanced for VATS not for rt play. I played throigh FO3 using only the real time combat, and it's not good.

It was better than VATS though. If nothing else RT was a bit more challenging and entertaining.

In my first post I just wish J.E. and the whole Obsidian team the best of luck with this one. Maybe the years of waiting will finally pay up. I'm counting on you.

The FPS combat was horrible, they clearly meant for you to use VATS. I liked vats, it just got a bit much with the constant slowmo closeups.

More than most FPS's, but not really. Still that makes them even less alike.

Purely combat-wise? Well, sure. Personally I'd prefer a Deus Ex combat system, though that's not even too different to Stalker's. Would it even be a bad thing if the combat was like Stalker's - FPS in a desert?

I doubt Obsid will overhaul combat (besides a melee spruce up) and that's fine - story, dialogue and atmosphere are what matter.

I'd like to see less wandering super-duper mutants, strange animals, mis-functioning robots, bandits and slavers. Instead have a civilised feel to it. An organized environment with farmers, builders, doctors, carpenters and so on but organised by criminals, pimps and corrupt politicians so it has the New Reno feel to it and the mafia has some control of outside area's.

However if you go to the borders/outskirts of Vegas you get the mutants, monsters, crazy robots and under ground bunkers. Making you want to explore to find these wonderful/bizzare things, however you still get the core story based around scumy humans.
