Movies you have seen recently

I can't even remember the title, but it was awesome and I implore you all to see it as soon as you can. Seriously.

That would be Doomsday from writer/director Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent) with Rhona Mitra, Sean Pertwee, Alexander Siddig, Bob Hoskins, and Malcolm McDowell.

That's the one! Rhona is extremely lovely, but she does scowl all the way through the movie.

Oh, and SPOILER! Sean Pertwee gets eaten. I like Sean Pertwee, it was a shame to see him get eaten so early in the movie, but then again he might have had other commitments.

There's a Vin Diesel movie on pay-per-view at the moment called Babylon AD. Mrs. Carlo likes the look of it and so do I. Has anyone seen it? If so I'd be grateful for a quick review, although the synopsis seems reminiscent of the sci-fi movie with Bruce Willis and Gary Oldfield... blimey I'm getting bad at remembering movie titles at the moment!

Cheers

MC

Haven't seen Babylon AD - it apparently had a bit of a tortured production from what I've heard.

Don't think its all that similar to The Fifth Element from what I've heard beyond some basic broad strokes.

^ I was on my own in a house in Dorset (very rural), drunk and watching The Shining. It was pretty scary, although not as scary as my hangover the next day.

the shining is one of the few, for sure.

The Missouri Breaks (1976)

Slow paced, with a finish for once that pay's off, character driven (great acting) western by Aurthur Penn whose pinnacle achievement is still Bonnie and Clyde (if you haven't seen it shame on YOU!) Brando, Nicholson are brilliant. Robert E. Lee Clayton deserves to be up there in the top "best screen villains EVER!" Or at least "awesome dude thread" Cinematography, music......all top notch great film.

Semi-Pro (2008)

Typical Will Ferrell film, I loled a few times and loved the inspired 70's soundtracks and references. If you don't think the phrase "****sandwich" is funny ignore this move at all costs.

Saw Babylon AD last night. Struck me as a graphic novel adaptation - a bit cyber-punk with Bladerunner overtones (aren't they all?). Turop (Vin) is a heavily tattooed skinhead who has to escort a mysterious girl and her nun-minder to New York.

Straight off, I'll say that I like Vin Diesel, he's a credible movie action hero and clearly loves the genre. However, the movie suffers from some very average action scenes (shooting out the tyres of a fast-moving range rover with an MP5? No) and Michelle Yeoh (for it was she) is wasted and only gets minimal butt-kicking opportunities (which is a bit like putting Jack Black in a movie and only giving him a single smart-arse one-liner). Bizarrely, Gerad Depardieu has a cameo as a Russian gangster (who travels around in a pimped-up armoured car full of wide screen TVs), Mark Strong is a mercenary with a Duran Duran haircut and Charlotte Rampling is the high priestess of a strange cult based in New York.

I liked the setting though, a sort of post-apocalyptic, dystopian Russia and all points East. To be honest, though, this movie was like somebody watched Children of Men and said 'lets make this movie for attention-deficient kids whose primary frame of reference is anything on Playstation 3.'

Monte's tip? Watch Chronicles of Riddick instead, then watch the really rather good Children of Men. Unless, of course, you want to see Gerard Depardieu with modelling-clay on his nose doing a very bad Russian accent in the back of a tank.

Cheers

Mark Strong is a mercenary with a Duran Duran haircut

Since I was a teen Duranie for a couple years, that made me giggle.

The last theater movie we saw was "Taken." I mostly wanted to see Liam Neeson kick some arse, which is basically what it offered. It was a mediocre-to-ok action movie, but I love Angry Liam.

I watched a lot of movies at home this weekend, but the main one worth mentioning is Two Mules for Sister Sarah. I adore that movie.

I was watching it a long time ago, when my kids were a lot younger and when I was playing Red Dead Revolver on my xbox. I tried to get my daughter to notice the similarities between the game and the movie, and she was completely clueless. Later my son, who is a few years younger than his sister walked in stared at the tv for about 2 minutes and asked, "Is this Red Dead Revolver?" :D

Anybody here catch that? All I understood was 'very'.

Gridiron Gang - Typical football football a sit brings nothing to new to the sports movie genre; but alright. This is Rock's mvoie, and he nails the part big time as it was tailor amde for him.

Scream series - BEST HORROR SERIES OF ALL TIME. 'Nough said.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li - kind of an odd fish, really. It takes a small slice of the Street Fighter backstory (specifically, how Chun-Li got involved in trying to take down Shadowloo prior to the original Street Fighter game) and essentially makes a late 80s/early 90s "martial arts" film about it (you know the kind that mixed average gun fights and chases in with martial arts fighting that show up on local TV stations on weekend afternoons). Neil McDonough and Michael Clarke Duncan are quite hissable as villains. Kristen Kreuk and Robin Shou do well as heroes. Robin Shou is really good as Gen; its a pity he hasn't had more of a major career, I think. Kreuk manages to be a good deal more believable as Chun-Li than I'd have guessed when I first heard about the film much to the films benefit.

Chris Klien - as Nash - may be the only actor I've seen able to chew scenery as one of the good guys. He is all over the place, putting his all in every scene, walking like he owns the place, growling, scowling, shooting at people and making some very odd expressions. Its almost like he's in a complete other film, one which I'd be interested to see just to find out the context for his performance.

Biggest problem is the editing; the film feels hacked up and I think that the order of some incidents may actually not be presented in the order they were planned to happen in the script. F

Day of the Animals - Leslie Nelson wrestles a bear, Christopher George, Michael Ansara, and Richard Jaeckel wrestle dogs in this "environment goes crazy" disaster styled horror film. Worth watching for Leslie Nelson going from annoying ad-man to over-the-top wild-man. He also gets the best lines "I think with my head; most people think with their butts!"

^ Although I love action movies, including pulp action movies, I've never been able to get into martial arts movies. Except Jackie Chan, who is completely brilliant on a number of levels.

BTW, this week I'm going to be watching Guy Ritchie's new movie RocknRolla. Will let you know what I thought of it, although I'm biased because I like his crime capers (favourite line from a Guy Ritchie movie: Q: What's that? A: It's me Bren gun, innit? Not to mention Brad Pitt's turn in Snatch, which makes me giggle just thinking about it.

As another aside, I'm seeing lots of very mixed reviews of the new Watchmen movie. When I first heard about it I thought "Er, that'll go the way of the movie Dune if they're not careful..."

Cheers

If you've never been able to enjoy a film with Steven Segal or Don "The Dragon" Wilson, or if you weren't able to enjoy the charms of say Gymkata or Best of the Best 3: No Turning Back, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li might not be for you

Pink Panther... As good as the first one (well the first steve martin one) but I felt it was a bit detracted because Clusou didn't have that moment where he just rattled off all the information and showed he was a savant rather than a bumbling idiot.

I pretty sure he did have one of those moments. :aiee:

He talks about how he replaced the original gem, the car he recognized from his stint writing parking tickets and a couple other things that he noticed that no one else did.

Over the past couple of weeks I've watched

16 Blocks -- typical Bruce Willis fare, which is fine by me. He did a great job with it. Entertaining.

Jarhead -- funny and weird. I especially like it when the Viet Nam vet jumps on the bus at the end. How awkward was that for the poor guys?

Kingdom -- Another one with Jamie Fox. Good movie. It was part police procedural, part commentary, and part action. A bit slow moving in places, but I liked it well enough.

Clash of the Titans -- Just as cheesy as it was when it came out in 1981. However, that full backside nudity of the female lead near the end (haha) is still a classic. The movie is worth it if you watch it with folks who don't mind making fun of the effects and dialogue during the show.

I plan on Watching the Watchmen when it comes out. I remember thinking the graphic novel was great when I read it years ago. I have some hope for the movie.

Babylon AD - Meh. It was enjoyable as a sci-fi road trip movie. I have always liked Vin Deisel. Maybe I missed something, but nothing in the plot made a whole lotta sense. The ending was just a head scratcher. What was the real point of the movie? The visuals were decent. It just seemed like it really wanted to be Blade Runner, but didn't have the plot or the writing to pull it off.

My Name is Bruce - I'm a big Bruce Campbell fan, I loved his books and all, but this was a bad movie. It was poking fun, I get it, but it was just too much bad physical comedy, bad acting, and bad effects. He needs to lay off the spoofs.

Bubba Hot-Tep was good, solid acting by both Campbell and the JFK guy. He's great on Burn Notice. I don't expect him to ever reach Army of Darkness status again, but My Name is Bruce looked like it might be a good spoof, instead it just turned out silly.

he was FANTASTIC in a sci-fi "origional picture" (ie shot for tv on a budget you could use as toilet paper) a few years ago.

Campbell's best work is on Hercules/Xena.

Bubba Ho Tep was okay to good. Some parts were amazing. Bruce nailed his part for the most part.

I saw it a while ago, I was suprised that Oliver Stone chose to go gentle with Bush. Or at least he didn't really seem to wanna bash him in particular. I got the feel through the movie that George W. Bush was just a simple guy from Texas, not particularly bright, but not outright stupid either.

And I felt kinda sorry for him in the end, because the movie potrays his failing abilities as a consequence of the enormous responsibility and being pulled/manipulated in every direction, by advisors who do think he's an idiot and want to push their own agenda through.

So I think it's good, but mostly because I knew nothing of the guy except what he said and did as president.

Fortune favors the bald.
