alanschu Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 The disappointing thing about Gothic is I found an "I Win" sequence of the combat (which was just swing my sword back and forth left to right) and it worked for a huge amount of the encounters. Still, I was engaged in the world and had a ton of fun with it (Gothic 2 that is, I never played the others). The unfortunate thing is my computer went kaboom and my motivation to start all over was limited. I remember killing that one super big troll though. That was good times
Purkake Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Skate 2 review is up. Featuring: No intro and teatrays. My rating: average
Slowtrain Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 That was pretty good. He had a bit of a cold though, which hurts the delivery. On a related note: Why would somebody play a computer game about skateboarding when they can go out the front door and do it for real? I admit I've never really understood the concept of computer and video games that are built around doing things that it are very easy to do in real life. I'm waiting for the XBOX exclusive: Clothes Washing 2. Eurogamer gives it a 10. Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

Can you do all of the tricks that they can do in those games? Can you survive 40 foot falls and be able to get back on your skateboard with no injuries?

It will take a year until you can do a slide on a handrail without breaking a bunch of bones. That said, the only skateboarding game that I liked was Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. It was fun to collect all the stuff and unlock hidden areas. It's a bit like guitar hero vs real guitar.
Slowtrain Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Yeah. I don't get Guitar Hero either. Except as some party thing like twister. And I wasn't saying skateboarding is easy. I'd kill myself if I tried, but the point is that if you want to skateboard, there would be much more attraction and satisfaction at getting out and learning the real thing, even if on a limited level. I think its cool when games can provide simulated experiences that are impossible or difficult to get. I love flight sims for example. Although it is possible to get a pilot's license, it is a lot more difficult than getting a skateboard. Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. I certainly don't feel like I'm skateboarding, for me it's just another game. I collect things, get points and unlock new stuff. So it's like a on-wheels platformer with a skateboarding skin. What do you think about Flight simulators?

So it's like a on-wheels platformer with a skateboarding skin. OK. I see what you mean. It doesn't really matter what the game is about, but more just the process of playing the game. That makes sense. What do you think about Flight simulators? Well, I only like the combat ones with dynamic campaigns (which have gone the way of the dodo bird). I enjoy planning and flying the missions, But I really wouldn't want to do it in real life. Most games I play I enjoy as experiences, but not as experiences than I have any desire to sample in real life. And vice versa: Things that I do (or could do) in real life, I have no interest in doing in a game. But I do see your point as seeing the game as just a exercice in technical skill that has no real world equivalent. Like playing pinball. I hadn't thought about it that way. edit: although that leads me to a question: Does it make sense to play a video game about playing pinball or rather just go the arcade with a stack of quarters and play the real thing? While the game is the same, the feel is different. I feel that a pinball video game is a cheap(er) alternative to the real, better thing. With Skate, the "game" itself is different and the experiences are different enough that you can't really compare them. Also, great that I could explain something to someone and actually have them understand what I was saying. Maybe this internet thing still has potential... Edit: I brought up flight sims, because they are pretty much as close to the real thing as you get in a sim. If you have a joystick then you could almost be flying a real plane(minus the potential to die). Edited February 18, 2009 by Purkake
Slowtrain Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Edit: I brought up flight sims, because they are pretty much as close to the real thing as you get in a sim. If you have a joystick then you could almost be flying a real plane(minus the potential to die). That's what I have heard, although you would never get me up in a f22 for real. I have spoken to real pilots, commercial and private pilots not military, and they say the single biggest difference between a flight sim and the real thing is situational awareness. WHich is to say, a flight sim doesn't begin to give you the same level of situational awareness that the real thing does. I have heard more than once that in some ways real flying is easier than a sim because of the difference in SA. I'm not sure I believe that though. lol. Meshugger Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Hum, the second iteration of a game that i have never heard of. Not that interesting, really. Can't wait for his Street Fighter IV/Killzone 2-review though. Rosbjerg Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Why play GTA IV when you can just as easily go oustide, jack a car, kill 5 people, jump out of a helicpoter in midair and land on someones face? Fortune favors the bald.

Pop Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 That was a rhetorical question I think. Join me, and we shall make Production Beards a reality!

Kaftan Barlast Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 I think the part about the "lets make it a really unsatisfying non-ending so we can set it up for a seuqle that will be released years after everyones forgot the original game" is one of his best observation this far. I cant remeber the last time I played a game that actually had an ending. In most games you just run out of game, and then the credits roll. WILL THE ALMIGHTY Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Oh how wonderful that world would be. But I do remember Dead Space having a very final ending with no hint at a sequel. Mass Effect had some real closure, as well. I'm going to sell FEAR 2 back anyway, can't see the point in keeping it. "Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"
alanschu Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 I didn't think Mass Effect really had that much closure. They did wind things up which was great, but I totally saw a sequel coming after watching the ending.
WILL THE ALMIGHTY Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Yes, but at least you felt that you had a complete game. "Alright, I've been thinking. Kaftan Barlast Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 One of the worst non-finish offenders is Dreamfall. Its not just a cliffhanger, but it also feels like it ends about 2/3rds through the game. And Funcom still havent decided if they are going to make a sequel, one that if begun today, would see the story continued just 6 years after the first game ended. punisheable by death indeed.
