I've never had a good thing to say about FF7... Kaftan would probably be kinder than me towards the game.

Out of some kind of personal interest (I don't wanna get banned) I will simply say... I thought it was ****.

If a game can upset you that much, you probably should unclench a little.

The game doesn't upset me half as much as the endless stream of tards that wander along worshipping it like some minature god of gaming goodness, and folk tend to react when you insult it and explain why it's such a cackfest of mentally unstimulating dhoom, with the same anger that you'd expect them to react with if you'd just told them that their loveable old granny is a stinking hag and should be put down.

Usually I wouldn't mind so much but it should be obvious to anyone with half a brain (perhaps even less I'm still unsure as to the exact number of neurons required for the calculation) that the entire FF series should be THE contender for biggest steaming pile of crap ever to hit the shelves, a none interactive story with the dullest gameplay mechanics on the planet, wandering around, mixing things up with awful minigame implementations, and people make it out like it's THE best thing since porn became freely available thanks to the internet. It's like all the FF fans have got togeather for some mass bukkake party just because the game is japanese! The series is the MAIN reason I absolutely and without a doubt REFUSE to play any JRPG's, it is responsible for the half cut androgenous emo-tard look, infact I may as well go so far as to say that basically FF is responsible for 90% of social ills! But everyone is too busy bitching about how manhunt 2 is too violent to realise what the real guilty parties in gaming are.

I rest my case.

I find it ironic that anyone who gets that angry about something so trivial can criticize anything as emo. People who don't like something are cool. People who feel the need to tell everyone why they don't like it, why everyone else shouldn't like it, and then get upset when they find out they started an argument are hilarious.

Personally, Fable should be a contender for the biggest pile of **** to hit the store shelves. And let me blah blah blah blah. Anyone who disagrees is an idiot.

Yeah, you gots to play an American game for real men.

:)

Personally I can't stand Metal Gear Solid. Especially 2, or at least I think that's the one where you have so many cutscenes, you'd think it was a Final Fantasy game (hah). But what I mean is, whereas you are sick to death of the androgenous emo-look (and no, I'm not fond of it either), I find much more detestable the kind of archetypes generated by thrillers or action media such as MGS, Tom Clancy, Bourne series; the gruff cold loner who likes his cigarrettes and bullets, or all that stupid stupid talk about global conspiracies and technobabble and whatever. To me it's just as silly as all that talk about Great Magic Item X or all these Freudian disorders all FF characters seem to be born with.

It's all a matter of which ones you find particularly disgusting; and that reaction is not predicated on any sort of 'natural' sense, anyway. Thus some people will take to the androgenous emo look like rabid sheep, while others will mock them while taking the 'Bourne'/Clancy look, while their seven year old brother throws pokeballs in the balcony and yells I CHOOSE YOU.

I wish I could enjoy the FF games, but my one and only try was the FFVIII demo for PC and frankly, I found it to be a disaster. Hopeless control scheme, characters I couldn't relate to and a protagonist with an attitude problem that made me want to put him over my knee spank him :)

That is ridiculous. Go play **** like Gears of War or something if you hate it so much. If even that's "manly" enogh for you

MGS2 is good game. Not masterpiece like first or third one, but definetly most interesting and original one of those three

Why?

It is most mind**** game ever made and only one which was found on very basis of ****ing gamers up (one big "**** YOU" by mr Kojima).

I respect that others like MGS. I was just commenting on how some people I know love its style and get into how 'cool' it is, while I find it rather try-hard.

NightandtheShape's hate for the FF-series are borderlining paranoia. Come on now, there are several games that we don't like, but hating them with a fury that would put the RPGCodex to shame is just silly.

FFVII had several "What the Hell"-moments, but all and all, it was pretty good game. Just like every other FF's that i played (FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, FFX, FFX). Except for FFXII, which i dislike with a passion. The story is uninvolving, the characters come of as pretentious clowns, especially Larsa, and the soundtrack is very generic for a FF-game. Add that level-grinding is a must, i couldn't even finish the thing. Point being, i know that there are several people that loved the gameplay it had, and even praised it as a game that put the FF-series in the right direction. Naturally, i disagree with them, but i wouldn't label them as emo-furries that should be exterminated either.

Same goes with Mass Effect. Most people here like it and find it as a step in the right direction, while i really don't like. But i haven't gone troll-mode on them for liking it for such a mundane reason.

Eh? Are you referring to your own post? In which case, I thought it served as a useful starting point. It's easy to look at particular fashions that immediately seem stupid to us and label it retarded, but as long as that kind of fundamentally ignorant impulses direct one's positions, our commentary can only be polemic. I don't mean 'ignorant' in the sense that you are an ignoramus or an idiot, but literally, that you base your position without knowing the conditions or wanting to know the conditions. Certainly it prevents you from understanding what it is that is so appealing about JRPGs. I don't play JRPGs anymore and can't stand to go back to FF7's gameplay, but I can certainly see where its coming from, and additionally, the fact that the 'androgynous emo' archetype derives originally from not 'Japanese culture' but from Western culture. I only have to go out to town and take a look at all the 15-year-old goth/emo wannabes stalking Wellington streets...

Anyway, I'm sure you didn't mean to engage in a prolonged debate about this, so feel free to reply, or not. I don't think you're exactly engaging in 'paranoia' or 'furious hate', but I just feel compelled to call people up when they offer a diatribe against something without trying to understand where it comes from or why.

FXII, which i dislike with a passion. The story is uninvolving, the characters come of as pretentious clowns, especially Larsa, and the soundtrack is very generic for a FF-game. Add that level-grinding is a must, i couldn't even finish the thing. The story I thought started off well then fell on its face, rolled around a little bit picking up some dust then melted into the ground. I always love to see a fantasy story/setting that actually tries to construct proper politics and political commentary of that time and world (instead of just having superpower King-heros or randomly transplanting current issues like racism in a silly manner), but all that early promise quickly devolved into the same old dungeoneering and those Knight guys just turned out, basically, to be traditional 'honour!" lackies.

The combat was basically murdered by the ... well, I can't remember any names anymore, but that stupid system which basically meant you could let everyone work on AI and fight your battles for you. Those contingencies. I'm the type that doesn't even use AI in NWN2, but micromanaging everything in FF12 just wasn't fun, either. Add to that all the grinding and it really was quite tiring. If FF combat wants to involve it should take the Tactics path, instead of becoming a bastardised Bioware combat.

JRPGs are full of problems (it says enough that the best one ever made is only best 'by default'), but at least they generally try to mix things up rather than pushing out the same cookiecutter elves and dwarves fantasy over and over.

Don't get me wrong, MotB was genius, and games like Fallout and Arcanium are bumping around (even if they're both ugly as sin), but it says a lot that the two most recent bioware games that broke away from the generic formula both borrowed heavily from Asia in one way or another.

The best JRPGs tend to have better artistic direction than the equivilent WRPGs. It's not that western companies are incapable of great art direction (just look at Guild Wars), but they're way to obsessed with DnD, which sort of drags everything down in this department.

To clarify my previous post which has drawn some attention from fellow board members, I was mostly trying to exaggerate my supposed anally retentive attitude which tale implied... The entire post was supposed to be somewhat illegitimate, and I thought it implied no direct seriousness on my part and would have been read thus... But these things happen.

My actual thoughts on FF as a series is that it is infact a relitively poor bunch of games, which are inadvertantly extremely popular. I have actually played a fair few JRPG's, enough to have formed the opinion that I really don't want to spend anymore time playing them.

I find them artistically unappealing, but this is not some ignoramious. I would certainly say I have enjoied anime in the past, so it isn't that which I generally dislike.

The FF games have been responsible for helping fuel an entire genre, of which I actually think is a good thing, more people playing games the better I say.

I will though always stand by a certain bunch of statements particularly about FFVII, the story and its delivery is what I would consider to be downright awful, it's both unentertaining (to me), and totally uninteractive. It can only be called at best a poorly written book.

Secondly, random encounters... The way they're done in FF serves no real purpose, they're neither challenging, or of any particular point, and they become annoying extremely quickly, or atleast I found them to be.

Third, the combat mechanics, it really is pure drivel, even the summon's don't make up for the fact that each battle is a repetative cycle, its annoying and personally I found it to be extremely unrewarding, and unenlightening. Menu navigation on this level coupled with an unentertaining result certainly doesn't get me jumping around screaming for more. Of all the game mechanics in any game, this ranks up there for me as the worst way to deal with combat, it was less enjoyable than PoR:ROMD.

Fourthly, mini-games, one or two is fine here and there its fine, but FFVII is jam packed full of them, at times it felt more like one was playing a bunch of crap games all tied togeather opposed to a bunch of great games. I certainly don't have a problem with mini-games, but when advancement is based upon such games it can become a sticking point.

So as I hope everyone can see, FFVII offered me nothing, I have a poor opinion of it as a game, but alot of respect for it as a product. I do also find the way that people jump to the defense of JRPG's funny, I feel there is nothing to defend, perhaps its because I didn't grow up with pokemon. What I will say is that, while I don't like JRPG's, I do like pleanty of other games from Japan.

I will make no comment on the quality of the game, but what I will defend is the quality of the artwork and the way in which it was incorporated into the game.

Ultimatly, the best thing about the entire game was how good it all looked compared to any other WRPG out there. NWN2 might have better graphics, more polygons and surface shaders, but all the designs were everything that we've seen before since DnD was invented, while Guild Wars presented a huge range of different styles and influences and meshed them togeather.

Ah, in terms of from inception to result I can only agree.

My first reaction as to you being mad, was more my gut instinct as GW's doesn't really look very western infact it goes whole hog in factions and displays its asain roots.

I'm certainly no artist, I just prefer gritty and real, opposed to colourful. I'm a big fan of desaturation o:). Heck sod it all games should be in Black and white with Reds for blood >_<

Certainly, Guild Wars suffers from the Great Bloom Plague of 2004-2007. But the variety of locales delivered was immense and Guild Wars certainly made you feel like you were going all over the world and finding historical architecture.

I'm with Tale on the "feeling old" thing. My first CRPG was Might and Magic: Secret of the Inner Sanctum.

Anyhow, FFVII is one of those games that the internet tells me was really popular but I can't remember ever seeing anyone actually playing it (including myself). It came out when I was just starting college; I owned no gaming console and occupied my gaming time almost exclusively with Civ2. The only console game I remember playing at the time was Mario Kart.

Actually, the only FF games I have played for more than 10 minutes are the first 2, as part of the more recent GBA "Dawn of Souls" release. (And I can't imagine playing them as anything other than a time-waster on long flights.)

By the way, when did the FF game switch from being all medieval-y to being all modern-but-swords-still-kick-ass-for-no-good-reason?

Posted

FF6 was the first to make that jump with its 'twisted industrial revolution', 9 is the only one past that which has the medievaly thing going on.

I still love FF7. I've had a game going on now for years. I continue it once in a while.

The first time I played it I was completely obsessed with it and logged in well over 100 hours.

My second playthrough I went all out on it. I used the game guide to find EVERYTHING, beat EVERYTHING and I reached lvl 99 for ALL the characters, yes, even Cait Sith and logged in 212 hours.

NO game since has motivated me to finish it so completely. None whatsoever, on any platform.

And I can't even tell you why.

And the ending, as far as I know, is still at the top.
