Unreal Engine 3 report, going to see alot of it so

Gamespots report on what they saw.

 

sounds great and the fact that it doesn't need a uber-card is even better

 

 

but the thing that jumped out at me was:

 

Epic also acknowledged that there are already several third-party projects underway using Unreal Engine 3, including at least one online role-playing game.

I'd be surprised if Bioware decided to get involved with a MMORPG. The market is saturated and they cost a fortune to run. D&D Online is in the works, and I think that's gonna take a caning too.

 

There's no reason why Bioware wouldn't licence a FPS shooter engine to make a RPG whatsoever. I just don't think that they'd go down the Asheron's Call route.

I doubt BIO is using it to make a MMORPGH or a straight up FPS. The closest to a FPS BIO will make would be soemthing Vampire; but even that's in doubt..

Lineage II (MMOG) uses Unreal Engine. It might be that NCsoft just upgrades Lineage II or releases whole new MMOG based on Unreal Engine tech. Seamless worlds are even more important in MMOG environment than in single player games.

 

Bioware and Midway also have Unreal Engine 3 licences but I really hope that they wouldn't do multiplayer online game or MMOG. What I'd really love to see is Unreal Engine based KotOR III... no more ultra small maps and real z-axis (and of course SSS, parallex maps, HDRL ect ect junk) :p

Wow.. streaming maps and the graphics quality of the Unreal 3 engine.. Almost sounds too good to be true. Now, let's hope someone manages to do a decent game with all this spectacular technology.

Nothing beats the original Unreal and UT when it comes to the Unreal franchise. I never really cared about the sequels.

@Hades: You're talking nonsense, read again what the UE3 is capable of. Just because the Engine is from a company that only makes FPS doesn't mean the engine is only appropriate for FPS. There're plenty non-FPS games out there using Unreal Technology, even Gothic 1 uses parts of that. And with the seamless map transitions in UE3, things can only get better. I for one am happy about Bio's purchase of the UE3.

Ya, the fact that the Unreal engine is used in a lot of shooters has no bearing on the rendering and graphics portion of it.

 

Oh, and the online RPG Epic is refering to is most likely Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.

Really? What good hardcore CRPGs have been made with the Unreal engines? None that I have seen. Just because an engine is capable doesn't mean that it will be used as such. What can be done is irrelevant to what is actually done and the tech has been used and geared for shooters.

Gothic 2 is one of the worse CRPGs I have played. Sorry, you are not selling me on the basis of the Gothic series. :puke:

I don't sell you anything. And your taste in CRPGs has nothing to do with the fact what can be done with Unreal Technology.

An engine doesn't "produce" substance, that's still the job of the creative minds working on the game. But the best idea is worth nothing if you can't realize it with proper technology. Ohh, and when we're at substance: Even you admitted that you've enjoined Deus Ex, a game that, without any doubt, has substance. But hey, just go over to the Bioware Boards and lecture the devs that they will fail of delivering substance due to the usage of UE3...I'm sure you'll make an ass out of yourself there (again).
