Merry Christmas....

Gorth

Recommended Posts

I know, it's still a few days off, but people being busy and all and I'm sure Ukraine and China are more interesting topics, but still... some things just are part of my upbringing, so Merry Christmas everyone (and a Happy New year to those who are too busy the next few weeks to spend time on social media, which is hopefully most of you)

🎅

(and if anyone suggests this should have been some kind of flavourless 'Seasonal Holidays' instead, go stow it, Christmas gettogethers with the family is what I grew up with)

How I have existed fills me with horror. For I have failed in everything - spelling, arithmetic, riding, tennis, golf; dancing, singing, acting; wife, mistress, whore, friend. Even cooking. And I do not excuse myself with the usual escape of 'not trying'. I tried with all my heart.

In my dreams, I am not crippled. In my dreams, I dance.

Christmas isn't Christmas for me since I left school. I need the terror and stress of final exams.

There will be no Christmas this year because it overlaps with the weekend and so it's gonna be just a basic long weekend. Also no New Year.

Australia is a bit flexible in that regard. If one of those dates falls in a weekend, we get the following Monday off instead. Whether it being Christmas, New Year, Queens Birthday (RIP) or whatever. Downside, we only get four weeks of annual leave, whereas people back in Denmark get six weeks 😛

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. Mencken

'Bah hum" ... never mind, not into that joke this year. 😛
Merry Christmas/happy and healthy holidays/vacation, with whatever you do during this time.

Recently, two of my colleagues talked about their kids believing in Santa (or our local custom, anyway, which is different but similar in terms of results) up until the age of nine or ten, and one said he wasn't certain when his daugther turned eleven, he thinks both sides just pretended for the joy of it, because it's just great to watch the kids at Christmas. Made me wonder if I ruined my parent's enjoyment of Christmas by figuring it out at five. Sure, they still had my brother, and he stubbornly refused to accept the truth for a longer while after that, but it was probably not the same.

Well, tangent over. Happy holidays and whatnot.

My wife and I are not in agreement about Santa for our kid. Since we had our son later in life I got to see friends and family go through the Santa saga with their kids and while most of them didn't really care or mind being lied to about it there were a few that were genuinely hurt their parents tricked them for so long. Santa was not sold to us as real person growing up but as a symbol of the season and I don't want to make him a main focus of Christmas for my son either but my wife thinks I'm killing the joy and spirit of the season by not actively lying about it. I've got no problem exploring the Santa folklore with my son but I don't think I can look him in the eyes and tell him that Santa is a real person who brings him gifts.

Maybe I am a joy killer. I'll write a trilogy of books about it but stop after I write myself into a corner with the second book, I think I'll call it the Joykiller Chronicles.

My mom didn't believe in doing the whole Santa thing because she felt it...didn't foster the proper respect and appreciation that the whole event should have. On one hand, I guess I get it, especially during childhood where the behaviors you learn can determine how you perceive and treat others for the rest of your life, but on the other hand...growing up poor and not having money or much in the way of gifts throughout the rest of the year, I can't help but think maybe Christmas is the one time an exception could have been made - the single time of the year where the kids don't have to worry so much about the ugly problems they can do nothing about. Would a little magic during one's childhood be so bad? There's arguments for and against it...

If I have children, they will be taught the truth. Santa Claus is either a weregoat or the Wild Hunt. Neither is to be taken lightly.

Santa is part of the Christmas spirit. My kids know at this point, but they enjoy the illusion as much as I do, so we keep it going.

It probably helps that I never answer questions directly from my children. Every query is a chance to test their critical thinking skills. :p

When you grow up in a condo you know Santa is nonsense - what, is he buzzing in past the concierge ? 😛

Where you even dig that Santa thing from? We here believe its baby jesus who bring the gifts as kids. You know, that guy the holiday is named after :)

anyway:

I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think, I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. I'm the kinda guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs with the side-order of gravy fries?" I want high cholesterol! I wanna eat bacon, and butter, and buckets of cheese, okay?! I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section! I wanna run naked through the street, with green Jell-O all over my body, reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly may feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiene"
