August 29, 20214 yr Author The Force of Scientific Authority | Nima Bassiri | The Philosopher (thephilosopher1923.org) In the years leading up to the 1975 publication of Against Method, Paul Feyerabend rehearsed many of the monograph’s provocative and polemical claims in a series of earlier articles and lectures. Against Method earned Feyerabend the inauspicious title of “currently the worst enemy of science” in the pages of Nature and the moniker “anti-science philosopher” in the New York Times. But the spirit of that book, his distinctive rebuke against the authoritative reach of scientific knowledge, can be found in one such early article, “How to Defend Society Against Science”. First delivered as a public talk, the goading essay begins with a preamble in which Feyerabend describes the incendiary supposition that first underwrote his arguments, that “science is a religion”. It was not simply the integrity of scientific epistemology that Feyerabend sought to impugn; he wanted to question the ethical-political dominance of scientific authority itself. Science is a “truth that reigns without checks and balances”, Feyerabend brazenly declared. And any truth that reigns in such a way “is a tyrant who must be overthrown and any falsehood that can aid us in the overthrow of this tyrant is to be welcomed”. September 2, 20214 yr I suppose the reality is we teach about philosophers and their impact on society, instead of delving deep into their philosophies. But I have a hard time believing they didn't cover Aristotle or the Enlightenment, even in Texas. Edit: I browsed the Texas education standards. Nevermind. I apologize for my assumption and your education. 7th grade is just all Texas History? Yikes. Edited September 2, 20214 yr by Hurlsnot
September 2, 20214 yr In Portugal there's a Philosophy class in the 10th and 11th grades. I assume there's something similar in other European countries. In the 90s the curriculum was mostly Greek philosophy "My hovercraft is full of eels!" - Hungarian tourist I am Dan Quayle of the Romans. I want to tattoo a map of the Netherlands on my nether lands. Calculus should start at Grade 9 for example. Edited September 2, 20214 yr by Malcador Why has elegance found so little following? Yikes There's no reason to apologize for the latter, unless you're part of the body that writes Texas education standards. In which case, 🖕. But yeah. Texas education is not very good. When I was younger and angrier I mistakenly blamed the teachers (and I had a few bad ones for sure), but now that I've grown I realize that like many things in Texas the education system is broken systematically with no repair on the horizon and most teachers were really trying their best in a situation that was hell for them.
