So.. the very people you claim to 'defend' because of bad words are saying clearly they are not offended by it. It is a job description. That's it.

Isn't that a classic MO of various defenders of "putanamehere" population?

P.S. The Carlin video is exactly what I was getting at it.

It could be worse, here in Sweden you get a taxbreak for hiring a maid. I mean... ****...

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. So this is not about defending anyone and yes the majority of actual people who do this job dont fundamentally care because the work conditions and salary is much more important than what you and I want to call them

But my real point is its not about them but what you and I personally decide to refer to them as, we are defined by our words in life in many areas so I always try to use the better framing of how we refer to things, domestic worker sounds much better than maid

Ask yourself this, if you were doing housework as a permanent job how would you like people to describe your job title ?

How so? The word maid comes from the word maiden which isn't a bad word. And I don't think it was used as an insult, like ever. The bad connotation can only come from the things that this occupation involves which doesn't change with a new name as Volo pointed out. Funnily enough the term maid was coined because young girls from nobility and such often became maids for more powerful aristocracy members and it would be inapropriate to call them servants.

Obscure Job titles are good

Like for example I call myself coder, but my job title is senior software architect, I still mainly code but my monthly salary is 10k € higher than those whose job title is coder 💸

EDIT: I mean which sound that they earn more money maid or senior domestic maintenance officer 😃

I'm pretty sure that there are "maids" out there that make the buck you do, but I'm pretty certain their customers are worse...

Heh, by March you've earned as much as I do in an entire year, and I have 6-7 different job-descriptions..

The age based high risk group is 65 or older, so DOB around 1955.  Meaning that when this ad campaign first started, that group was 17.  The ads ran until 1984 (an unprecedented 12 years!) meaning its conceivable that those in their early 40s would remember the ad from their childhood.  Heck, the child actor who played "Mikey" is himself only about 51 or so, so also outside the high risk category.

I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

I remenber Mikey and I am 41. I figured it was an attempt to poke gen-x. Being part of gen-x, I just ignore it. :p

No. No, it doesn't. It sounds ridiculous, insulting, and pathetic.

Its pretty weak sauce if the attempt was to poke at Gen-X.

But maybe there aren't enough people who remember Big Otis from Kellog's OKs or something for them to actually target the 55+ crowd? :p

Elerond !!!  Why you being an elitist about your job title....dont you know people outside of IT dont really know or care about our various job descriptions as we all seen as " computer PC people "

But on a serious note, I appreciate your point and I can understand your own view on this but in most IT companies your job title reflects your experience and job responsibility and of course your salary. I studied finance but ended up working in software primarily in the financial sector. Basically I am a software consultant but there are different titles in IT that do matter, so you will have ( for example )

  • software consultant
  • senior software consultant
  • product specialist

I imagine your company is the same, a coder is the beginner in programming but then as you advance you will get to senior software architect. I cannot believe your job responsibilities are the same ?

But I also understand there is nothing wrong with referring to yourself as a coder because you still are one 8)

Wouldn't rat cannibalism be a good thing?

Rat cannabalism is really common. They'll eat their own young if they're a bit peckish and want a snack. You also tend to get 'rat home invasions' every autumn/ winter when it gets cold.

Disputed Hydroxychloroquine Study Brings Scrutiny to Surgisphere

- When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.

At the moment scientists should be raising questions about any published study involving covid-19 since none of them will have been rigorously peer reviewed and most will be using non ideal to somewhat shonky methodology due to being rushed, not being independently selected datasets/ not being able to take all confounding factors into account. Having said that, they're certainly not the only study to have found higher mortality from HCQ, just the biggest and most recent.

Right. I've read a few things floating around that happened to come not from published studies but preprints even. I think there's a risk that this recent tendency to expect from scientists definite and quick answers will damage trust on science -- even without help from dishonest "scientists".
