I was actually interested in Diablo 4 for a hot second... then I saw that there would be no offline mode. Interest level immediately plummeted to zero.

It certainly kills my favourite playstyle, permadeath. Lagspikes killing your hardcore characters gets old reaaally fast.

It does have old Diablo vibes. But: still always online, connected shared space. I am not Diablo player, but is that what Diablo fans want?

While I've never been a hardcore Diablo fan by any stretch, I would say a good percentage of Diablo fans (even ones who were disappointed with Diablo 3) also enjoy games like Borderlands so I guess it's one of those 50/50 type deals.

This was the reason, why I skipped D3 as well, I did not care about the cartoon graphics, but always online killed it for me completely.

No-offline won't deter me. I do recall that single-player lag TrueNeutral mentioned, which was a bit of a buzz kill when playing on launch. It got better, though I can see how it's to the detriment of permadeath runs.

Personally online is a huge part of Diablo's appeal even though I tend to associate the games as a single-player experience. I also associate replayability with the games, and that's always more fun with friends.

I started a fresh D3 run at a LAN-party once, when the venue closed and we had to leave, all of us in the run logged in online back at home and finished up Act 4 late into the night. It's one of my fondest memories. I also hadn't finished my single-player run yet, so I also got a totally fresh experience in that run.

Maybe they'll find a way that requires a connection, but doesn't use a server to propagate the world state forward, that would be the best compromise. But that's probably easier to crack than having to reverse engineer server side game logic.

Ditto. I only played Diablo III on consoles because I wasn't forced to be online only. Skipped PC entirely.

Online only for Diablo iv on PC and consoles is confirmed, so that's that. I won't play it.

I don't think most players care about it that much anymore, it seems to me that most people who are interested in stuff like Diablo play lots of online games anyway.

I can relate to the old crowd here not liking it though.

The new players freak out if they are offline, or if they leave their phones at home. Some people actually resent and begrudge the lost hours away from their social media account—due to needing sleep; and of what postings they might miss until reading it later.  It's comically sad IMO.

Something Cyberpunk related probably.

The video before it got deleted probably contained some phone screened gameplay of Cyberpunk 2077. I have seen only thumbnail before it was gone. It probably got hit by the copyright hammer.

For me no offline mode is a 100% deal breaker because I drive a truck for a living. Sometimes I park for the night in an area where I get a weak connection or no connection at all. Any always online game becomes unplayable at that point and it's just 60 gigs or whatever of wasted space on my SSD.

This is exactly it.  The vast majority of gamers simply do not care about the online/offline argument.  Every hardcore Diablo fan I know, even those in their 30's and have been a fan since day 1,  also have tons of fun playing online co-op shooters.  It seems only on private internet forums, with a cast of a few dozen characters, will you see such vehement opposition xD.
