Wow, my brain hurts from reading that thread on the GOG forums. Seems like there are two issues:

First that this is a giveaway where Linux users miss out on wallpaper artwork (!) due to not having the Galaxy client even as an option. I'm sure Keyrock and the other guy on the planet who is exclusively playing on Linux will be fine with that. And if not, they can voice their protest by not buying from GOG. I'm suspecting building and maintaining a Linux version of Galaxy might cost more than the expected increase in sales or usage will rake in.

The other one is sharing your stats on social media. Which I get, and is the reason why I am not participating. If nobody participates then promotions like those will go away on their own. I'm sure a hell not sharing my GOG stats with the world, then everyone would see the thousands of hours I've put into Master of Orion 3. Talk about embarrassing.

There's a third ridiculous complaint that I see all the time when it comes to development. People who say that they should not spend their time making silly promotions but rather finish Cyberpunk. Yeah, sure. Because CDPR's game developers double as marketing team, right? Sigh. :p

edit:

And before someone from PETL (People for the Ethical Treatment of Linux :p) comes around and berate me for passive-agressive penguin hate - I've been an avid Linux user for longer than most. It's kind of a requirement in my line of work, although it's been a while now, I just never bothered playing games on it. Except Tux Racer.

My solution to GOG's lackluster Linux support (they're still better than Epic et al in this respect) is that I buy from Steam. It's GOG's prerogative to support or not support whatever OSs they choose and I'm sure it's a business-driven decision where they feel developing and maintaining a Linux client for Galaxy is likely a net negative in terms of revenue. I can't fault them for that.

Rather than get angry about it and vent on their boards and/or social media I simply choose to give my hard earned money to Valve instead, on account of their stellar Linux support. Seems like a much better solution, but that's just me.

I can't make heads or tails of what you guys are talking about, and couldn't see anything on the GOG front page either. Only figured it out after diving into their forums and now I'm offended that their official post has broken BBtext and they never bothered to fix it. Disgraceful.

I grabbed the Eye of the Beholder games for free, though I doubt I'll ever play them :)

In my expert opinion Eye of the Beholder is overrated. It's fans are just blinded through Nostalgia.

Quite likely. Never got into them back then, so don't have much nostalgia either.

Unobtrusively informing you about my new ebook (which you should feel free to read and shower with praise).

It's reputation. How it's spoken about. I'm not saying it's a terrible or bad game (because it's a good game), I think it's just overrated by it's fans that's all. On the other hand Eye of the Beholder can also be underrated by it's critics and haters. That's just my opinion.

I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think, I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. I'm the kinda guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs with the side-order of gravy fries?" I want high cholesterol! I wanna eat bacon, and butter, and buckets of cheese, okay?! I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section! I wanna run naked through the street, with green Jell-O all over my body, reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly may feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiene"

I tried the first Europa Universalis way back when it came out and found it not to my liking, and over the years dabbling in the odd Paradox grand strategy game or two the only one that I enjoyed playing was Stellaris - and that really is more of a traditional 4X game in grand strategy clothing. The one thing that turns me off games even more than being open world with a lack of focus is being a sandbox with no win condition.

Not saying that makes EU a bad game. Just not for me. My brain just doesn't work that way, if something has no set win condition in needs to be competitive (i.e. PVP) for me to like it. :)

And yes, that means... I never played Minecraft, or The Sims, or really enjoyed Sim City beyond the szenarios with win conditions. *shrug*

I am very similar to you, when it comes to games with lack of winning conditions. For some unknown reason EU games were exception to this rule *shrugs*
