I've never seen a flying water heater hover in the air like that before.

sound quality o' video is such we cannot recognize national origin o' the would-be plumber/rocketeers.  we wanna assume it is australians, or possibly muppets.

thanks to years o' farscape viewing, we don't see much difference 'tween muppets and australians.

when looking for the farmer's commercial, we discovered the following:

HA! Good Fun!

I'm kind of surprised they seemed to doubt(?) that the water heater could go through the roof - back in the day when buildings were heated by boilers, a boiler explosion could take down a multi-story building.

I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

Like, a Tesla Tower? /Edit: Yeah, they even mention that in the article. 😆

@Guard Dog originally brought this up in the funny thread, but it turns out there is an interesting story behind it 👍

How the ants survived harsh conditions as a group rather than individuals (good little soviet ants!)

This is nothing. I am 100% certain we will have genetically manipulated humans and human clones within just a few decades from now. Other types of life-forms much sooner.

Conan the Bacterium says: "I'll be back!"

'Super bacteria' survives for three years outside space station

Scientists who attached a strain of bacteria to the outside of the International Space Station have been stunned to find it survived for three years, in open space.

The experiment, led by a team of Japanese researchers, involved the bacteria Deinococcus radiodurans, also known as Conan the Bacterium due to its extreme hardiness.

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. Mencken

What could be "the most significant astronomical finding in decades" will be announced tomorrow.

Possible spoiler: apparently an article about this was posted earlier by mistake and removed quickly. If this is correct, they discovered phosphine gas on Venus' atmosphere, which can only be made by microbes or in a laboratory.

That would be big, however i guess there would be easier explanation how gas could be there than microbes.

I'm the kinda guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs with the side-order of gravy fries?" I want high cholesterol! I wanna eat bacon, and butter, and buckets of cheese, okay?! I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section! I wanna run naked through the street, with green Jell-O all over my body, reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly may feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Well, if the article is true, then they have done many studies trying to explain how phosphine could be produced without life, finding no way. There is even a phosphine specialist in the team, saying that there is no way for it, except with life.

However, I agree with you. Even if the article is true, this shouldn't be announced as life. It is just like the Viking experiments in the 70s. They released nutrients on a soil sample and detected signs of life consuming it. Then they repeated it but heating the sample first, obtaining no signs. Did they kill the martian microbes on the second part? The same happened in two different locations (two Viking probes on different parts of the planet). Some people consider them pretty conclusive, but NASA disagreed:

Damn you NASA, poking your nose where it doesn't belong. Now *they* know about life on Earth

well i think more in like like

A) i guess they detected that gas via spectral analysis - it may be incorrect reading

B) eve if its the gas,, we might not know all possible ways how it is created

It won't be an incorrect reading. They'll have had it checked by multiple other groups to confirm it. A mistake there and that simple would be career ending for the researchers and for whoever approved publication.

OTOH I'd have to agree that the belief that all pathways except for a biological one have been excluded is fundamentally hard to support for an environment as different as Venus's is from Earth.

It's pretty big news, even though we still have to take it with a grain of salt. Will probably spawn a bunch of new Venus missions, which is also cool.

Oh, "they" already know. From the moment we broadcast our very first radio signal, "they" have known. 😉

Well, depends on how far they are... radio waves would reach solar system for sure, but I am not sure any arrived to nearest other system yet?
