Backer Beta: Coming August 18th
Namutree replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
I can't wait to play the Beta! -
I also don't think the "Jobs Americans won't do" line is true to be honest. We need the labor force for two reasons: A) We need CHEAP labor. B) We need the additional consumer base. That's it. They exploit us for a higher standard of living; we exploit their willingness to work for pennies an hour. Everyone wins. Interesting that you'd call us a democracy when we aren't one. We are a representative republic; not a democracy. As for the rule of law; I agree. The rule of law is very important, and in our current case where the law can't be enforced because it makes no sense the law needs to change.

I hope you will reconsider that position in the future. Drugs have been legal for the majority of our history and banning them undermines our founding principles on every level. Legalizing drugs would not increase how commonly it's used, and if they were legal they'd be cheaper. If they're cheaper expect that the odds of drug addicts committing crimes to fund their habit to decline dramatically.
-
Actually it hasn't been this way since the country was founded. Our government does way more than it used to. Government having a hand in everything isn't working fine; we're going broke and losing our way of life.
-
Republicans have been doing a poor job recruiting new cultures into the party because the republicans do not have a consistent philosophy and thus no selling point. Even if said culture would be inclined to agree with your positions; it's hard to get people to go vote for something they hardly believe in.

Some fences sure, but not the border fence. So far the fencing we've put on the border has been very ineffective. Coyotes just cut through them or tunnel under them. Not to mention the surveillance equipment we set up over-heated and broke. Appears would be the key word here. ISIS is a doomed state that will killed off soon enough. Even if by some miracle they weren't; their main focus is the middle east. I doubt ISIS will use the border against us. Even if ISIS did decide to use a terrorist attack against us; they would try to employ domestic Muslims; not foreigners. A border fence would not be helpful against them. Hamas and Hezbollah are no threat to the US so they can be ignored. Border security, or even immigration have little to do with terrorism. Funny you should bring up the great wall. Wanna know a fun fact about it? IT DIDN'T WORK! Ever! It was a complete waste of resources, and worse yet; gave the Chinese a false sense of security.

Yep, it definitely isn't stealing as long as you give them money. I should let my neighbor know that. I'll walk over to his house; tell him to get out within a few months or else he'll be fined $100,000 a month. As long as give him a few dollars eventually when I get around to it (If I even bother at all; sometimes the government forgets to compensate people) taking his house and land by force isn't stealing. "mangy illegals" Just what I would expect from some one like you. It's clear you simply aren't concerned for people's rights or our prosperity. You just don't like the foreigners coming in. Yes; opposing illegal immigration is fine, but you obviously aren't interested in any solution that doesn't involve keeping out foreigners. I'm glad that the fence would never work because if we ever did succeed in keeping out cheap and exploitable labor; expect our standard of living to plummet dramatically.

In the long term you are right. For now though it's fine if they stick with pro-life. Republicans can evolve on that issue over time along with Hispanics.

It would solve the fact that they are here illegally. As for how many people we let per year; I don't it would kill us to streamline the process so we could easily increase the amount of people who enter on an annual basis. More people is in fact a boon so I'm not afraid of letting in a good chunk. As long as we don't have to give them access to social services like welfare. In regards to the triple fence; there are three major issues to deal with. Our border with mexico is fairly large and making a triple fence would be very expensive; not only to construct, but to even maintain. The second issue is that coyotes are VERY good at getting past them; so don't expect them to work terribly well. The third issue is that there is US privately owned property at the border so you can't make a complete fence. At least, not without stealing a lot of land. The fence idea simply isn't viable thankfully.

Libertarians are too obsessed with states rights for my tastes. That said; sure you CAN vote libertarian, but everyone knows that a vote for a third party is a waste of a vote. I'm hoping the republicans will drop the big government aspects of the party and adopt a small government stance on those issues. If only for the party's survival; the republicans MUST end the drug war, support gay marriage, and change their platform of foreign entanglements. The fact that doing so will actually coincide with their message of small government and be good for the country is a bonus. They don't have to be as extreme as the libertarians, but a move in that direction would give them some kind of future. I also feel I should note that their pro-life stance is one I oppose, but it is actually good for the party's future. After all, Hispanics are the fastest growing group in the country and they are usually pro-life. So while I support abortion; I am certain remaining pro-life is a good idea.

There's no known way of stopping them at the border right now. Not that most illegals even get in that way. Even if they did; putting an end to illegal immigrants getting in the country would be a huge blow to the economy which is ABSOLUTELY DEPENDENT on the cheap labor they provide. There is a solution to the illegal immigration issue. Make it easier for them to enter/stay legally.

Thoughts on Gamescon Stream
Namutree replied to Pray's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I love the giant watermill. When I heard that Obsidian was making a successor to the IE games I thought, "This game really needs a giant watermill." I never mentioned it before now, but I swear it's true.- 269 replies

Do we get to name our pets?
Namutree replied to Namutree's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I might have to. Lucky for me I was planning on being the ranger. -
The government sometimes does enforce these silly laws against property. Yet, as you said; it is a waste of resources. Thanks to that fact enforcement is low, but not entirely non-existent.

Hiring them isn't helping them break the law. The that they entered this country without following the legal process was just as broken whether or not they are working. I guess you'd rather they be living off welfare than working. The issue of illegal immigration is between the illegal and the government; not between me and the government. Yet if I hire a guy to fix my porch, and it turns out he's an illegal; I'm in big trouble.

The Iraq war was a disgrace, but sometimes we forget just how much
Namutree replied to Humodour's topic in Way Off-Topic
To the original poster- Iraq is no joke. It was a poorly made strategic decision by an out-of-control government that has betrayed it's founding ideals in favor of foreign entanglements. Things like this happen when the US doesn't just mind it's own business. -

The stupidity and incompetence of the government is never news, but people still insist it's an institution that should never stop growing. -
So by your logic I should be able to shoot anyone I want, because the gun is my property and I can do whatever I want with it. Property rights aren't absolute, even under capitalism. That would be a violation of the victim's property rights. Property rights don't mean you can do whatever you want to others.

Incorrect. Capitalism is a social system based on individual rights and the defense of property. These are not exclusively economic issues; it applies to the social arena as well. Social issues affect property issues. For example: A capitalist believes in private property; this is pretty common knowledge. If you believe in private property than you must support marriage since as a functioning institution marriage expands private property rights. Thus any capitalist's position on an issue like, gay marriage should be known as soon as some one identifies themselves as a capitalist. Capitalists support property rights; thus they support gay marriage. The same logic applies to immigration. Laws that forbid citizens from hiring illegal immigrants for work suppress property rights; thus capitalists oppose them. Ultimately, like socialism; capitalism is a political philosophy. A philosophy as legitimate as any other.

Do we get to name our pets?
Namutree replied to Namutree's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
This will probably be an uninteresting story, but I'll tell it anyway: About seven years ago I found a stray cat with a litter under my grand-fathers car. Among the kittens was a runt of a kitten with white fur and a little pink nose. The poor runt was in bad shape; she had an eye infection and wasn't able to get any milk due to being smaller and weaker than her siblings. It was certain the kitten was destined to die soon. I took pity on her, and took her home for care. I succeeded in curing the infection and gave her the milk she needed to survive. Eventually, I showed the kitten to my friends. One of my friends asked about the kitten's name; for some reason Yoshimitsu from Soul Caliber 2 came to mind. I named her "Namu" after the word Yoshimitsu would spam in the game. A few days later while on the internet I decided to see if namu meant anything; so I looked it up on google. Turns out namu means tree in korean. Because of this I use the name "NamuTree" in honor of my cat Namu. This is why I want to name my cat Namu in poe. I would really enjoy it if poe lets you name your pet. -
They might still have that; it would just be tied to an objective system. See some hulking monster in the woods, lets call it, "Durga" or something. After you kill it the game shows a list: Durga killed 1/3. Kill three more and you get 300 xp. Now they got you running around looking for more Durga's to kill. It would be exploration, but with a lot of suspense. After all; that corner you haven't checked out might have another Durga to kill. They might have something like that.
