You really ****in love Wood Elves, eh? -
Personally I didn't find the story companions very interesting. These are, of course, my personal and subjective opinions: - Aloth: is irritating, and not very likeable. - Devil of Caroc: one of the best companions, personality wise. Has quite funny ambient lines. - Durance: really bloody annoying. He thinks he's wise, but I just get the impression he's full of ****. A ball and chain to drag around the game, frankly. - Eder: one of the funniest companions, well worth keeping around for the banter. - Grieving Mother: boring and stale. Waaagh you lost some babies. Nobody gives a ****. She's a cipher, which is the only reason I ever kept her around. - Hiravias: quite funny. Has a really powerful custom shapeshift. - Kana Rua: never kept him around long enough, he's bland as hell. I kept expecting him to tip a fedora at the women in my party. - Maneha: haven't met her yet - Pallegina: quite boring. I can't even remember anything about her from my playthrough. She didn't stand out at all. - Sagani: just a boring hunter archetype. Chasing some idiot from her village around. Yawn. Rangers are OP, though. - Zahua: funny sometimes. So basically there's a handful of companions that are kinda funny or have useful abilities, and the rest are ****.

I went with Human instead. Two reasons: 1) Human portraits are wayyy easier to find than Nature Godlike ones. (yes, yes, I know it's a silly reason) 2) When you compare Fighting Spirit to Wellspring of Life, I think FS comes out on top. You get an accuracy bonus which is far better, IMO, than the speed bonus from WoL. You get a damage bonus of 15% which is superior to 3 MIG (9%). You don't get the CON bonus, but who cares about that. On top of that, you can equip a helm! I think Human is far superior once you take all this, plus the ability to use a helm, into account. And... it's easier to find cool portraits =p Anyway, thanks for the build, Boeroer. I'm looking forward to trying it out... whenever Obsi gets off its ass and patches WM2.

The Custom Portraits Thread
Yosharian replied to Namutree's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Hello all, I am on the hunt for portraits and I'd be hugely grateful if you guys had any suggestions for the characters I'm trying to 'flesh out' as it were: (Update: after quite a bit of searching I've found some portraits that fit what I'm looking for, although I've made some modifications to races in some cases. I've attached them in case anyone is interested. Note: all attached images are formatted 210x330 and 76x96 respectively.) 1) An Aumaua portrait (male) -> changed to HUMAN - red armour would be best - fighter archetype - 2-handed weapons preferable (i.e. no shields) - For example I like this picture: http://s32.postimg.org/y8muhal3p/Ladyof_Pain.jpg but I'd prefer male and more of an armoured look, but you get the idea - I like bright, vibrant colours and a clear face 2) A Pale Elf portrait (male/female) - druid archetype - 'feral' look would be awesome - robes/clothing preferable - staff preferable but not important 3) A Human/Dwarf/Orlan paladin portrait (male/female) - Bleak Walker: dark, brooding archetypes best - greenish/dark armour best - dual-wielding, prefer not shields 4) A Nature Godlike portrait (female) -> changed to HUMAN - wizard archetype - robes/clothing preferable - staff/wand preferable 5) A Wood Elf portrait (male/female) - ranger archetype - bow preferable, but fine with 'assortment of weapons' 6) A Boreal Dwarf portrait (male) - chanter, but fine with warrior archetype because he's a tank with a shield etc - plate armour - firearms are fine but preferably not the focus of the portrait, otherwise don't mind what weapons are present (but not 2H) In the end I went for portraits that were pretty dark... Oh well. Hopefully you guys have found something interesting from this too. I particularly like the Dwarf Chanter. He's a ****ing bad-ass. Haha. I've found that I really prefer portraits that are focused on the character's face. Pillars', and this applies to RPGs in general that have custom portraits, portrait dimensions are too small to allow for really detailed full-bodied portraits. Focusing on the face brings the personality of the character to the fore. It also helps to have all the party's portraits similar in this respect to give a better uniformity. -
The way this defence stacking bug is being described, it is game-breaking. At least one user has posted in this thread stating that he cannot progress because of the bug. The spellstrike and talent bugs described by other users in this thread also sound serious and non-trivial, if not game-breaking. This is completely unacceptable for a game that should be near the end of its patching cycle, if not at the end - it was released in March 2015. This cannot be tossed aside with a mere 'oh it's Obsidian'. It's unacceptable.

Do you realise how difficult it is to implement such a thing? Games have advanced a lot since Baldur's Gate 2, but this is asking for a lot... Oh wait... ... In all seriousness though, I feel like this is a very niche thing. It'd be nice to have, but when it comes to Pillars' flaws, there are bigger fish to fry.

Update 3.02 is now live!
Yosharian replied to Aarik D's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
ETA on next update? Am waiting to begin a new playthrough! -
Hi, so I'm going to be trying out POTD for the first time and based on my previous thread I've chosen the following party (all custom-made characters): 1) Fighter - Lady of Pain build (2-handed tankyish damage dealer) (this will be the main character) 2) Druid - something based on Thunder Cat more or less (hybrid) 3) Wizard - haven't decided on a build yet?? 4) Ranger - pet-oriented early game (e.g. Carebear) then a respec into a more bow-focused build (e.g. Great White Hunter) 5) Paladin - haven't decided on a build yet?? 6) Priest OR Chanter - haven't decided?? So I was wondering what you guys think about: a) What build should the Wizard be? I have nuking power with the Druid so he isn't the only nuker... maybe CC-oriented? But I'm open to a more martial-focused spellblade-type build which I think would be quite fun... I have zero idea how to build such a wizard, though. b) What build should the Paladin be? I have very little experience with Paladins so I'm open to suggestions. I want him to have rez abilities and maybe some healing if I end up not taking the Priest, but otherwise I want him to be a little tanky, and be able to hit stuff with a stick fairly well. c) Priest vs Chanter: here's where I'm really stuck. I like Priests because they really bring the pain (and alleviate it) in boss fights with their endless buffs, heals and protection spells; however, they are really boring to play (endless buffing) and not very good vs trash mobs. I like the idea of having a tanky chanter that can tank some troublesome mobs while noodling away on the banjo, and then bring out summons and stuff if the fight goes on longer. That said, when I tried using the NPC chanter briefly I was quite bored with him so I would love a build suggestion. Plus, can the chanter do any healing or buffs compared to the priest? I really have no clue when it comes to chanters (initially I was put off having one at all but I've sort of changed my mind... maybe). For example, can chanters wear plate effectively? It doesn't slow down their singing, right? Also, what weapons should a melee chanter use? Overall with the party I'm looking for everyone (except maybe the Wizard, but again I'm interested in the possibility of a spellblade build) to be a little tanky and be able to hold their own in melee (well not the Ranger obviously but point being, he has his pet to tank for him). Along those lines, I want to be able to crush trash mobs fairly easily and not have to babysit too much. In boss fights I'm hoping the power of the Druid and the Wizard will allow me to survive ok. Thanks in advance if you read this far.

Yosharian replied to Kingsman's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I do not recommend the Barbarian for any serious game (i.e. Hard/POTD) or if you like having a powerful character. If you prefer to role-play and don't care that your character is underpowered, and you're playing on Normal or Easy, then go for it, because it's a very 'cool' character. It's just not 'good' compared to the other classes. That said there are a very extremely niche builds that can work 'ok'. -
Why a Chanter specifically? And why 2 Paladins? For running 2 auras? The Paladin can easily cover healing. Lay on Hands, Reviving Exhortation and Healing Chain are all excellent abilities. Zealous Endurance is good for reducing damage but you might want to consider Zealous Charge since your party is pretty heavy on martial characters. You can always make and use scrolls to cover the buffs for the more difficult fights. You're gonna rest a lot anyway though since your Monk will ideally be taking damage, and that means losing a lot of health. If you wanted to avoid resting I'd probably swap him for another Ranger or Paladin. Ciphers aren't really a good substitute for CC when compared to a Wizard, Druid or Barbarian. A lot of enemies are immune to Prone, Charm and Paralyze so it does hinder their CC abilities quite a bit. Also they lack AoE on a majority of their enfeebling abilities. You could easily use a Druid though without needing to rest often anyway. Just build a Spiritshift focused one, and use CC abilities when the situation calls for them. If spiritshift wears off you can always swap over to Firebrand. I referred to this one for my Priest: http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/83225-class-build-schemers-needler-roguelike-skaen-priest/ To sum it up though, basically with a Priest of Skaen you can effectively make a Priest/Rogue hybrid. Prey on the Weak gives you Lesser Sneak Attack which also stacks with Apprentice's Sneak Attack effectively giving you a +35% damage to enemies that qualify for sneak attacks. You can use all kinds of other bonuses to boost it too like the Glanfathan Stalking Boots, weapons with the Vicious enchantment and the camping bonus. This basically allows the Priest to deal good melee damage should you not want to cast any spells during a particular fight. It also helps out during the early stages of the game when the Priest's offensive options are very limited. This is really helpful, thanks a lot. I hadn't thought of using a spiritshift-focused Druid.

A very interesting read guys! Thanks for all your posts! So I've been considering the idea of having a party for which rests are at an absolute minimum. This means avoiding being reliant on per-rest abilities. So picking Cipher over Druid/Wizard, for example. So with the previous setup: Front line: Monk + Fighter Second line: Rogue + Ranger Support line: PALADIN + CIPHER So the Paladin has very little healing ability but he does have the ability to mitigate damage (DR aura) and has other nifty abilities, and can of course off-tank or even main tank extremely well. I'm wondering whether the Paladin can replace the Priest and make a more durable, less heal-reliant party that can avoid the constant resting that makes playing this game very frustrating (Wizards in particular, as others have mentioned in the thread, are particularly reliant upon resting). Combine that with the wtfbbq Cipher who never needs to rest, and you have a pretty nice party which will basically only need to rest when it runs out of Health. Opinions? PS: some of you are posting obscure builds which I could probably find but I am quite lazy and would appreciate a hyperlink or two to point me in the right direction.

I really detest chanters. Thanks for the suggestion, though. Cool, I definitely will. I might put off my playthrough until I upgrade my PC anyway (this summer? undecided). Like I said, I've glanced over the patch notes but I really don't have enough knowledge to be able to judge how much the changes have affected the class.

Rover, A Rogue's Best Friend
Yosharian replied to DnaCowboy's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yeah Ranger pets are kinda insane in terms of how much scouting and 'pull' power they give a party. And if you do a bad pull and the pet gets whooped it doesn't even matter that much because they have no HP pool, only Endurance. -
So in preparation for the launch of WM2, I'm considering a PotD playthrough. Hell, I might actually finish the game this time. I've been thinking about what my favourite team might be. So my question to you all is, what's your most overpowered, or alternatively just your favourite team composition. It would be awesome if you guys could post explanations of why you picked each class, since I'm looking to learn a bit more about how certain classes work in combination with each other. My own thoughts on each class (although I have not absorbed the 3.0 changes fully yet so these may be obsolete...) are, from strongest to weakest: OP ---- Druid: seems like one of the best classes because of nuking power, some heal/CC, and the ability to go animal form early on which really helps this class' playability. Cipher: I used Grieving Mother in my first playthrough (pre-WM) and holy **** was she overpowered. I haven't played any kind of Cipher recently. Are they still OP? Wizard: it seems common knowledge that Wizards are OP but since I've only used Aloth and only in my first playthrough (stopped around level 9ish) I don't have a lot of experience with it at high levels. Rogue: I have yet to find the perfect build for this class but they are pretty insane at dealing damage, no other class seems to come close. Ranger: Rangers are brilliant now, apparently? I've been using Sagani in my most recent playthrough and she kicks ass. Priest: seems like one of the best support classes really, I don't think anything supports better than a spamming priest. Monk: I have been using the Juggernaut build with Zahua and he kicks so much ass with it. A very fun class. AVERAGE --------------- Fighter: been wanting to try out the Lady of Pain build for quite a while. Fighters seem like they still need love in certain areas, though. Paladin: I only put it in 'average' because I haven't a clue how to make this class shine. I only have experience using Pallegina (lol). BAD ------ Chanter: had a bad experience with this class and gave up on it, just seemed too slow to do anything. Barbarian: very disappointed with this class, mained it last playthrough and gave up towards the end. For a possible party I have been considering a frontline of Monk (Juggernaut) Fighter (Lady of Pain), a second line of Rogue (some kind of melee build) and Ranger (pet build then respec into bow build later on), with a support line of Priest and Wizard/Druid/Cipher. I've been hearing great things about Paladins though, so I was considering trying to fit one in somewhere. Also, it's so hard to pick between a Wiz, Druid or Cipher. Argh. Anyway I hope to see some interesting ideas from you guys on your favourite PotD (or otherwise) party combinations...
