What is an SJW? I keep seeing it. -
Oh, so those of us who don't have fancy cameras need not take pics, huh Woldan? I take photos with my phone because I don't have a fancy pants camera! :Cant's grinning while giving Woldan a hard time icon:

White People: What They Say in Public vs Behind Closed Doors
Cantousent replied to ktchong's topic in Way Off-Topic
I ate 'em. Anyhow, now that I've had some sleep, I think I can marshal my thoughts better. My point about poverty, and this goes along the lines of what Gorth was saying, is that being stuck in the wheel well of the bus of life doesn't require any particular skin color. Grom had bad experiences at the hands of white folks. His example show that he took those experiences and transformed them into something good because of some of the breaks he had in life. Awesome! However, I would much rather celebrate his success at rising above hatred, even if sometimes he still falls into those ways, than defend folks for hating. I can understand some folks hating people of any particular group. A woman who was gang raped at a bar shouldn't assume all men are rapists, but she probably has a hard time not feeling animosity towards men. I can sympathize with her. It still ain't good. Even if I don't judge her, which I don't, my point would still remain that her feelings towards men aren't good for her. It's still something that detracts from her life. ...And, if she used her feelings as a way to excuse self destructive behavior, then the men who raped her would be causing her even greater harm after the fact than they did during the first assault. As for me, I think I've discussed enough of my childhood except for one thing that may or may not be humorous. (If it's not, bite me!) My biological father was half Mexican by heritage. My grandmother was born and raised in Mexico. It doesn't come up all the time, but when it's come out that I'm part Mexican, I've had people call me a 'wannabe' and all manner of ignorant crap. Hell, I've had Mexican descent relatives tell me I'm not *really* Mexican. Now, anyone who's met a significant number of actual Mexicans, knows that you get a pretty broad range of skin colors, hair colors, and eye colors. Yeah, by the it got to my generation, we looked a hell of a lot more white bread than good ol' Nana. Never really bothered me. Just kind of weird. -

I'm going to mention something that I hardly divulge, but I have literally lived below the poverty line. ...And I lived in it before the 'poverty line' meant only having one tv in the house. I have known hunger in a real sense. No, not the 'I have to eat vanilla rather than chocolate ice cream hunger,' but the 'I have had nothing to eat today and I'm trying to sleep.' I don't want to scramble for the bottom because I've always hated the idea that I would fight with folks over who had it tougher. There are folks who've had it far far worse and some that have had it considerably better. The thing is, we can't these things become an excuse to... You know what? I think I'd better wait until tomorrow to embark on this particular sailing before I continue. I've been indulging a little, as is sometimes my wont, and am perhaps somewhat diminished. -

The problem I have with that, Bruce, is that it tends to encourage 'victimization.' It becomes a race to claim victimhood in order to have the right to attack someone else. I mean, I think the example of 'white math' is pretty lame as an example of racism, but the idea that 'white privilege' means that people of other colors can't be 'racist' against whites is self defeating in the long run. Making it politically correct to hate white people because of past generational transgressions isn't the way to peace. -
Yeah, Sawyer from everything I've read is strongly in favor of a straight point buy system. That's always been kind of cool because I prefer straight point buy. Frankly, from what I've seen at least, you'd have more luck with weighted point buy, which I also hate. I actually don't mind rolling. I just think it encourages people to treat rolling characters as a mini game. I don't care that they can get a real benefit, only that a straight point buy gives people a fair and understandable way to distribute points and get started on the game. ...But I *know* some people really jones for dice rolling.

I decided to celebrate my latest physical assessment by making beef stroganoff and buying a bottle of Bushmills. Okay, I could say that I'm a huge Irish whiskey fan, and that would be true. I could also say that I've always enjoyed Bushmills when I've had it, which is also true. However, the fact is, it was on sale and is generally cheaper, so that's why I got a bottle. Anyhow, I also like beer with dinner, so a big can o' Fosters.

Best animal companion?
Cantousent replied to DruidX's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Does anyone else have visions of the Dogmeat syndrome from Fallout? I haven't played a ranger in the beta, but I just can't take another animal companion that will cause me endless ire as I try to keep it from killing itself every chance it gets. Just what I need, a pet that I keep out of every battle for fear it's going to jump on someone's sword. It's too late to do anything, of course, and I'm certain that you could finish the game with a ranger. I would be surprised if there were any classes that were truly not viable. I'll come back here and eat my words if I'm wrong, though. I haven't even played that much of the beta after all.- 65 replies

I laughed out loud. I'm pretty sure it's going to be humongous based on the things I've read so far. What I'm hoping is that they've struck the balance between sandbox and story. I think they managed to make a pretty free and open world in New Vegas while still creating a compelling story. In terms of video game stories, I honestly think New Vegas might be the classic statement about the Iraq war as portrayed in the industry. Of course, that's not what PoE is meant to be in any way whatsoever. It's going to be a nice big game with enough leash to get yourself hanged but at least you'll die with a good story. At least I hope.

Right now, I'm trying to decide on whether or not I'm going to support both SDS or SCL. I have to admit that SCL increasingly has the look of a toolset geared game and less about my single player experience, which means that SDS will either get the majority of my pledge or all of it depending on how it looks. I can't see throwing out more than a few hundred dollars altogether, not being made of cash like some of the other members here. :Cant's sheepish grin icon:

You guys never understood. No one was Eldar's alt. Eldar *is* the alt. Anyhow, I'm just stalking a dragon friend of mine lately is all. ...And, by the way, 6lbs since February 18th, last time I went to the doctor. What's weird is that increasingly I'm that fit middle aged guy, but I still think of myself as that horribly obese unhealthy old guy. In terms of Woldan's account of the doomsday stash, I used to *be* someone's six month supply for a family. :Cant's donner pass icon:

I'm actually amazed that the discussion has been as level headed as it is. lol :Cant's doffing his hat to ktchong icon: I thought it was just another provocative and simplistic thread meant to troll, but I guess I was wrong. Happens often enough, there just isn't much surprise. -

Individual words don't have to matter, especially if focusing on them leaves out a full understanding of the speakers intent. This is usually the case with expletives that come with a heavy emotional burden for some listeners, such as the word '****'. https://www.google.dk/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=louis+ck+%27n%27+word Words don't exist in isolation, though. Sure, take the mean as a whole, using context and other social cues. Same goes with sentence to paragraphs and paragraphs to pages, etc. etc. etc. ...And even expletives and the like *do* convey a meaning. Of course, like context, the tone of the words makes a huge difference. Body language makes a huge difference. That's why communicating in writing often takes a lot more finesse, or least a different finesse, than communicating in person. You can smile when you say 'jackass' which softens it and makes it friendlier. Of course, to mimic this, online forums have emoticons. <.< :Cant's making a point icon: -
Like most threads, there's more than one thing going on. There's the original post about completionist runs (which isn't completely defined there) and then there's the thread about general length. There's even other stuff swirling around. If you want to do a crit path speed run, and you have mad skills, you're going to run through most games like greased lightening. However, like the completionist route, speedruns aren't a reasonable standard. Even the reasonable standard of going in, playing with character creation, starting a game, doing the things that strike you as cool while playing, and finally getting to the crit path ending is only a general measure. It's not like there's a golden yardstick. If folks generally complete the game in 20-30 hours, there will be significantly more complaining than if it take 40-50. The OP asked about a completionist run, which is what I generally do, but there's virtually always some new stuff to plunder later that I find. Even experimenting and trying new things, a second completionist run always goes faster for me because I already know where the broad mass of content is and how to approach it. I would think that, for game length purposes, only the first run would matter. However, extra runs would have to count as replayability. :Cant's relishing the replay grin icon:

agreed, but am thinking the most common complaint being voiced is not how the etymology has changed over time or that words have power, but rather why hurlshot has to literally say, "the n-word." is silly precisely 'cause if hurl's mother or father had been black, expectations and punishments for use o' the situationally offensive word in question would be very different than for a white-as-driven-snow hurlshot. does it not come off as ridiculous when you see congressmen and pundits talking about "the n-word."? go to any cafeteria at any university with a sizable % o' black students and you is gonna hear "the n-word" used frequent and in its complete form. gonna find the same if you watch bet for more than 5 minutes. is numerous explanations. we get that the historically disenfranchised would wanna diminish the power of certain insults. is other explanations but whatever is causes and reasons and explanations, hurl having to say, "the n-word" is just... silly. is childish pretend. HA! Good Fun! I refuse to use the euphemism "n-word" in a conversation about racial epithets. Since I have only used the word in discussions revolving around word use, it seems counterproductive if you can't actually say the word itself. However, I will point out that I've had black friends who would argue that actually say, "niggah." Apparently, that's a different word. ...But I also believe that there are examples of excellent literature that gets targeted because of racial epithets and stereotypes that clearly isn't meant to be bigoted but only to tell a story of the times in which they were written. Mark Twain springs to mind. -
Did my physical assessment this morning. The results were good!

You have an Obsidz name, Grom... Fights With Trolls. -
Let's just say that if some killer hadn't used that defense, one of them should have. Of course, there's no evidence that Kirottu's character will be that way. At best we could call him a grave-robber appropriator.

ITT: mod is foiled by stupid-ass language filter. Classic. OP: You misspelled "Beauton Gilbow". In a thread about inappropriate language, no less! lol
