Standard Characters Vs Choice Characters
metadigital replied to Kata_mad's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
I agree it was completely ridiculous to have Mandalore running about helping a LS Master Jedi! Why? What a lame reason! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No, he travelled with the Exile in order to stop the sith from conquering the galaxy, since he wouldn't want the Sith to get in the way of his crusade. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Meh. I don't see why a LS Exile would want him along. It's not like the Exile needs directions on the Ravager (because he doesn't get any from Mandalore), or Mandalore is any significant factor in the combat. It's just a clumsy device to include Mandalore for the sake of it -- which, ultimately, is the worst reason. -

No offence, but your grandfather sounds more like like "Stupid Good"; getting into a fight for an unknown cause, and supporting someone simply because you wish to prevent the other side from winning sounds like a recipe for disaster. I hope, for his sake, your grandfather was a good fighter.

I dont see any reason why one would preclude the other. It's highly unlikely the same person would be responsible for both in the workload. From the point of trying to sell the game. Graphics all the way. I prefer to call myself a realist rather than a cynic " <{POST_SNAPBACK}> that's quite an optimistic self-image you have there ... I don't see sophistication of graphics and narration as being mutually exclusive, either; but realistically there is only so much budget to share around the development costs, and I personally feel that writing delivers more bang-for-buck than special effects. I am still happy to watch films from nearly a hundred years ago, from the very earliest stage of film, so long as they have a compelling narrative and good acting.

While I agree that Philip K. Diсk (aka PKD) is arguably one of the top three most important SF writers in the golden age of last century, I don't share your admiration of that particular novel. I much prefer his short stories; I think his ideas were breathtaking and his -- very competent -- writing style was perhaps not on the same level as that genius.

Why in the world would anyone create such a nefarious plugin? Talk about wasting a site's bandwidth...get enough people using that on one site and I have no doubt you could bring a site down. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Don't worry, I'm sure it won't be long before the server side of the arms race create a demon to catastrophically disable any ip address doing such an irresponsible attack, for the common good, you understand ... No, it was more of a heads up. (I could have just PMed Aurora or dashus or whomever, but I think it is better to bring it out here in the forum, to make sure no-one uses the pernicious little plug-in, and that everyone knows why this is a Bad Thing. I would think even the most na -
The book stores have coffee, so you can browse (read: read!) books whilst supping on an appropriate beverage (hot or cold, as whimsey dictates), all for the cost of said beverage ... I guess you may even get away with a free glass or two of tap water, depending on the magnificence of your cajones ... I read for enlightenment and the consequential enjoyment I receive from learning another piece of information, another thought that has been passed from some other being to me, via the abstracted medium of written words ... what a concept: an idea -- a meme -- is created in another mind, represented via a clumsy process (because as flexible as a language is, it will never match the mind for freedom of expression) and interpreted -- hopefully with some degree of precision -- by another mind. It is a beautiful thing. A pity it is all-too-often wasted on the trivial and the banal ...

I'm not sure if you are arguing FOR better graphics because you don't want more / commensurate effort invested in writing, or you are just being cynical about the motivations of RPG publishers generally! In other words, what would you PREFER to see, better graphics or a more memorable story?

Baley, you should know better than to post spoilers in the general Forum!

1. This request should be in the Spoilers Forum! 2. The topic subject should include the subject you want help with, not just "help"; this is the best way for people to respond to a cry for help, after all opening lots of "help please" posts that you can't answer is not going to encourage you to open more, is it? These two factors together also have the unfortunate consequence of spoiling the part of the game for anyone curious enough to want to help you, but not sufficiently advanced to have passed the puzzle in the game. That's what a spoiler forum is for. <_<

Standard Characters Vs Choice Characters

As I said in the other thread (Consoles, I think), there is an assumption in the forum that romance is mandatory for a deep connection between the audience and the fictional PC / NPCs. This is not the case. Obi-Wan in the OT when he aquiences to Darth Vader, Gandalf in the first LotR, when he falls to certain doom, these are obvious characters that -- potentially -- can invoke an emotional response, creating a profound connection. I agree, a poorly scripted romance is not worth having. Better writing will make a game more respected and loved and popular and give better return on investment; after all, graphics are soon superceded by the Next Big Thing, stories are remembered for generations, e.g. Planescape, Deus Ex, etc. -
Yes, but graphics quickly (after that "Wow!" thirty seconds) become obsolete if the story is crap. I want more than thirty seconds for my

I like the forbidden planet in K1 (Korriban is a close second). I would have liked to do more there, though, like swim in the oceans -- maybe an underwater section -- and explore other terrains. K2 was a close match-up between Nar Shadaa and Dxun-Onderon, with the latter winning by a nose, simply due to the buggy implementation of the former and the consequent tangible loss of potential.

The opposing camps are behaving in exactly the right way to cause every thinking consumer (especially corporates) to delay any purchase of the new technology. No-one wants to increase their own expenses on a technological blind alley. A new, larger form factor for a drive is a complete nightmare prospect in our modern miniturization era. I sense there will be a delay before widespread adoption.

... From Harold. He's that sheep there over under the elm. He's that most dangerous of animals, a clever sheep. He's the ring-leader. He has realized that a sheep's life consists of standing around for a few months and then being eaten. And that's a depressing prospect for an ambitious sheep. He's patently hit on the idea of escape. ... Nesting Sheep.

I'm not suggesting you are wrong, just that you are making a pretty large assumption. I wonder about the logic of canning Sam & Max; there is obviously a thriving community, so that means (unless they screw it up) there is a ready, guaranteed market for the game, and the marketing and accountants should be able to make a pretty accurate prediction on the return on any investment ... unless LA are smarter than we are giving them credit for, and they have done the numbers and the development cost wouldn't be recouped in the sales ... maybe LA is waiting for a cheaper technology or a better franchise opportunity (making a series of sequels). I don't believe everything in this world is down to incompetence (cynicism, yes).

My scholatic career was a series of choices to maintain the greatest amount of career choice in the future. The truth is that career selection is non-trivial, time-consuming and involves a lot of blind alleys before you can be confident of yourself. This sort of effort is never supplied by a school or college (I'm sure they will provide resources for students to research any career, but the hands-on guidance just consumes too many resources; there would need to be a career counsellor for every two or three students, plus a pool of secretaries!). The best advice I can give you is to research. It's really important to do the research at the beginnning of your career (sounds obvious, but how many people actually do this, and not just "fall into" a career); this is especially important in today's job environment where the "job for life" has all but disapeared. Make sure you "interview" as many people in the careers that you are interested in as you can; first hand knowledge of the "best day" and "worst day" and "best part" and "worst part" of a job is important. I doubt anyone would not want to talk to a student and prospective junior college in their industry about their career: people love talking about themselves (offer to buy them a beer, or lunch).

That's a supposition on your part. It is equally likely that LA were just catching the marketing wave of the latest film, or similar M$ cash deluge. LA would have to be very poor accountants to be hurting for cash so soon after releasing a "Game of the Year" ...
