Excellent, thanks. I'll look them up. (Probably won't be through reading it until after you've published your next paper, though. ) Edit: Certainly seems that Lattimore is highly regarded. Here is the first review of Fagles: Since you ask me, you word-hungry Amazonians, How I came solate in life to the end of a tale That schoolchildren read in comic books, A tale that is one of the sturdy legs Of the table on which our culture rests Since you ask, I will tell you, and gladly, too. My journey started, though you grin in disbelief, In ninth-grade Latin class, where "Ulysses" Duped the cyclops by calling himself "Nemo." Then a deep sleep fell over me, And I knew no more Homer, not in Greek or Latin Or English or even the strange tongue Of the network miniseries, while Sun Drove his blazing chariot round Earth One hundred hundred times. In this sleep I wandered the world of letters, Homerless but unable to avoid the homeric: Achilles' heel, the Sirens' song, Calypso, the Trojan Horse, and swinemaking Circe-- Crouched like Scylla, aswirl like Charybdis, Threatening cultural death to epic ignorance. At last I found my literary Tiresias, The New York Times Book Review. I shook from this seer the name Fagles, And so guided, I made my way home at last, Through a translation that rings of a heroic time, A time when men were stronger and grander than we, When women were more beautiful, And when, granted, sexual equality wanted A few millennia's labor; But even so, a rendering as modern As anything DeLillo, new god of the underworld, Or the infinitely jesting Wallace Can lay before us. The best, in fine, of both worlds, an epic worthy Of the blind bard and of his heroes, his heroines, And the deathless denizens of Olympus.

It wasn't a taboo at all. Ten bucks goes to whoever tells me when it became a taboo. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Bible. Sodom and Gomorrah.

Jodo, give up now, before you show yourself up more.

I haven't studied the Homeric works, either in English or the orignal Greek (or even in Latin), so I would be restricted to commenting on what is posted. :"> But if you can point me in the direction of a good analysis (I think I can pick up a Penguin Classics English version of both from the local bookstore) then I'd be glad to read it.

wookie jedi and the lesson of strength
metadigital replied to Knights&Darths's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
1. I think you mean wookiee Sith, not Jedi, as to get Hanharr you must be DarkSide. 2. It's probably a matter of balance, as a super-strong non-Force-Sensitive character given the bonus of Force magic would make a Fighter-Mage of -
Generally speaking, google the exact error and the game. Somewhere on the web will be a FAQ about it, I guarantee it.

Trust me, if a grown man buys a plush toy for himself, then people around him will start to ask questions.

You can replace "Star Wars", "Jedi" and "Sith" with the proper nouns from any other setting, and the paragraph doesn't lose a single ounce of validity. You know, that's "the stuff of legends". Not really exclusive to SW. What we need is less cliched stories, not different settings. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> True enough, but therein lies the problem - stories that are not clich

SpellMar is very proud of you. Yes, it is Opposing Force. (And we are still left to guess which is the force, and which is the opposing force, and there are many, so my defence is that I named it better than the developers, because they left it too ambiguous which force was the eponymous one. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.)

If it is a "Buffers overflow" error, you can allocate more buffers in the config.sys file. Just change the existing BUFFERS=5 or whatever it is to 100 or so. Don't go over (128 or 256) or you'll blow the top end.

Obsidian Forum Diplomacy Game 2 (OBS-2)
metadigital replied to metadigital's topic in Pen-and-Paper Gaming
Aishur still has not responded. I shall have to carry on without him, but I might consider a good excuse (like he has been in hospital or something). Unless that happens soon, then I guess we carry on. If he has been in hospital, then this game is not really going to matter too much, anyway, in comparison. -
You are free to use whatever rating system you want. (It is more through sheer laziness and lack of imagination that everyone seems to be using the same system, not out of any misplaced sense of layalty or systemisation.) I think it is at least mandatory that everyone has a special characteristic that is added, as well as the inventive and humorous comments for each attribute. People could post shorter assessments, too, and they could be collated.

You only think she doesn't know. She probably has two diaries: the one you read, and her secret "real" diary.

I've had guys smoking their own brands of nicotine in rollies when I was dealing at the casino; you know, the face-full of second-hand smoke. But that didn't bother me too much (even when I smoked, I didn't like other people's smoke in my face). What did bother me was the smell of the burning tabacco: it smelt like fertilizer (for this one dude, anyway). I made a comment to the other guy smoking, when the old guy got up to go for a bio break, and found out that he was the son of the smelly-tabacco-smoker. A lot of people use normal tabacco as a catalyst to help other things burn in rolled cigarettes. Oh, and nicotine is a deadly poison, so if anyone did injecc it, they would overdose on nanograms, as a milligram will kill about 20 elephants. So it's a lot worse than heroine for toxicity AND addictivity. I don't theink they will ban smoking, though. Prohibition doesn't work. Ministry of Love, does, though, so if everyone decides that they don't WANT to smoke, then that will work ...

Geeks have a lot of baggage? Edit: I was more admiring the ruthless streak that a woman scorned possesses, more than giving sage advice.
