  1. I'm waiting for the time when they merge it with the hi-res on-iris displays ...
  2. I can walk to any PC in the freaking world, jack in my CD and tada... I can play ALOT sooner than I could if I had to DL it first. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Technically you would have to uninstall it on the previous PC, first. Not sure why you are quoting weird figures for Steam and downloading. I had to re-install Steam after I formated my harddrive. Once I had contacted the Steam website, it was installed in about 10 minutes. (I don't know how it worked that fast, but I tested it and played all the games I installed.) The subterfuge employed in the initial delivery of Half-Life 2 was a little bit rude, but only if a customer bought the game without an internet connection (as this wasn't stated as a prerequisite). I'm not sure why you are all up in arms about Steam: what spyware? Actually, forget it, I'm not really interested. Anyway, you have neatly diverted attention from the original point (and it didn't work): I mentioned Steam because you were posing a copy-protection issue: What stops you from allowing friends to DL it with your "copy" then if you can also DL it multiple times? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> which cannot be done with Steam. So, you see, DL is quite a safe way to deliver product. Even if you have such compelling arguments as: Steam sucks. <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
  3. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence that suggests rolling back to older drivers may help. (Not sure why, maybe some of the improvments assume new methods for pixel shading/mapping, and these aren't compatible with the older methods.)
  4. So it is an inter-dimensional connector between to non-adjacent three-dimensional spaces? A "worm-hole" that attaches in the same universe at very similar spacial loci, as opposed to a "transporter" that dematerializes matter, transfers the transmuted energy to another location, and rematerializes it? Did they leave maps? Or clues to how to operate them (do they need controls, like a switch to adjust destinations)?
  5. Sounds like a driver issue, if it's not just a GPU RAM overload ...
  6. The Kingdom of Heaven will arrive here on planet Earth!
  7. Oh yeah, the far right racist, former pron actress, lesbian MP... why, they still have her in the party... I simply don't get why they haven't booted her long ago. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Every political party needs some mechanism for grabbing headlines ...!
  8. Let's keep this discussion friendly, and remember it is why one doesn't like their OWN country. Racial slurs will only get this topic locked.
  9. Aw, man, 3DO were great ... apart from the limited all-the-same-clones games they released ...
  10. Um ... is what a fixable problem?
  11. A Greek proverb (that I can't find), appropriated by the Romans: CIBI CONDIMENTVM ESSE FAMEM or, Fifteenth Century French: n'est sauce qui vaille fain
  12. No, they are "taking responsibility" for their own children.
  13. It's not being made by 3DO, I believe Arkane Studios are making it - They made Arx Fatalis. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> 3DO? As in the console company that had all the arcade stuff?
  14. That review is about a year old, the one from this month isn't posted yet. From this month's review:

  16. Is that the ancient Japanese technique for storing eja- ... errr ... what is that? "
  17. Not if you don't like the taste of it... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The human animal is an omnivore. Sure, one doesn't have to eat meat, it's just that the alternative is very very difficult to maintain. For example, brain-surgery patients in hospital are fed brains. This is mainly because the proteins are readily absorbed in their state: manufacturing a different sort of protein form another is quite resource-intensive and non-trivial. Also, a study of vegans a few years ago (no details, sorry) found that nearly all of them were deficinet in most B group vitamins, and all of them were deficient in B12, which causes problems with thinking ... So make sure you get all the micro-nutrients that are found in meat products from whatever substitute you eat ...
  18. As long as they adhere to the standards, rather than make their own up (which they, and the others, usually do), then I don't see that as "stealing", more "subscribing to the standard" ...
  19. Internet Explorer 7 has been given the green light as far as rendering behaviour is concerned and the latest version unveiled at the MIX06 conference will remain the standard, aside from bug fixes and security updates, until launch. Markus Mielke on the IE7 development team wrote in the team blog that 'we don't plan to add more layout features or drastically change layout behaviour'. This means that certain features won't make it into the first release of IE7: CSS display tables and generated content are mentioned. CSS expert Eric Meyer wrote in response that this is the point from which web developers will be expected to test and tweak websites to get them working with the new version of IE: 'We have a calm period of at least three months in which to find out how things stand before IE7 goes final.' IE7 is due to go to a final release in the second half of the year, following a preliminary Vista Beta2 release for the browser. Mielke added that the IE is working on 'a public bug database where you can submit your issues, track their progress and see when we internally fix an issue' - a feature not unlike Mozilla's Bugzilla, used to channel bugs found in its products. Meyer claims that despite the clear indications that Microsoft has been paying close attention to the success of Firefox for IE7, this should not be viewed negatively. 'The IE team has looked over what happened while they were in hibernation and is emulating the best of it. That's not lame, that's smart. And it should have other browser makers a little bit worried. A lot of their success has been due to Microsoft's complacency. They're going to have to be a lot sharper and more nimble now that the 800 pound gorilla is actually awake and paying attention to its surroundings.' Matt Whipp

  22. A US judge has deemed that Michigan's attempts to ban retailers from selling violent video games to children is unconstitutional. The ruling is a success for trade groups representing US games publishers, which filed a lawsuit last year. Federal District Judge George Caram Steeh has ruled in favour of a lawsuit declaring that the law is unconstitutionally vague and limits First Amendment rights (regarding freedom of expression), reports The Washington Post. The governor of the US state signed the law in September, which was intended to take effect 1 December 2005, but Judge Steeh issued a preliminary injunction back in November. His latest ruling, made at the end of last week, will make the injunction permanent. 'Video games contain creative, expressive free speech, inseparable from their interactive functional elements, and are therefore protected by the First Amendment,' the paper quotes Judge Steeh in his ruling. A spokesperson for Governor Jennifer Granholm said she would discussing legal options, including the possibility of appeal. Michigan is not alone in trying to curb the sale or rent of violent games to minors - California, Illinois and Washington are among those who have attempted similar legislation, which has also been struck down or put on hold.
