Discussion: the PoE beta xp system
Matt516 replied to IndiraLightfoot's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I don't always agree with Gromnir 100%... But when I do, it's when he makes a post like the above pointing out the meaningless and semantic nature of much of this argument. Stay contentious, my friends. -

That said, I believe the new bit about bestiary XP was actually in a thread on these forums. Might have been this one, I don't remember. -

He posts a lot of things on the something awful forums. If you search "something awful pillars of eternity" you'll find the thread. Then find a post by "rope kid" (josh) and click on (I think) the question mark in the lower left of the post. That'll get you all us posts in that thread. Other place he posts info is his Tumblr. Search "Josh Sawyer Tumblr". -
1) Thanks for the update! 2) Any previews of new features to look forward to?

Sensuki's Suggestions #014: Non-Terrible Inventory [Mockup]
Matt516 replied to Sensuki's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Is there anything special about the Titan Quest inventory? I looked it up, looks like every Diablo-esque inventory I've ever seen (jigsaw). Which isn't a bad thing, though I don't think it'd be suited for PoE. -
Sensuki's Suggestions #019: Desynchronized Character Movement
Matt516 replied to Sensuki's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
While I agree that the IE games shouldn't be blindly taken as the model for everything, this solution is actually quite elegant. The random (but short) delay isn't really noticeable explicitly (at least I never noticed it until Sensuki pointed it out). YMMV of course, but having played a good deal of the IE games I never found the delay the least bit annoying. Instead, it added a more weighty and realistic feel to the movement. Did you find the delay annoying in the IE games? -
Do you get Attributes on Level Up?
Matt516 replied to Pray's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I mean... it's just one way of doing things. The *IE game* way of doing things, I might add. ;P (PS:T is a special case) Attributes define your character's natural tendencies and abilities, and talents/skills let you grow your character in the way that you want. I wouldn't mind getting attribute points on level up, but the game doesn't need it by any means. YMMV of course. But I don't think its an unreasonable decision by any means. -
Discussion: the PoE beta xp system
Matt516 replied to IndiraLightfoot's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
This removes meaningful choice from the game just as much as punishing players for skipping combat does. The minute one choice has an obvious advantage over another it means other other choices have less meaning. At no point in this game will fighting be a better option then bypassing combat if the expenditure of resources is not rewarded by something in return. If combat was very difficult and had high costs to be successful then gave XP.. this would introduce choice. Can I keep fighting? Should I turn back? Should I stealth past? It's only when the non-combat xp crowd takes things to an extremist meta game level and say "I CAN'T DO IT JOSH.. I CAN'T SKIP A SINGLE GIBBERLING.. PLEASE REMOVE COMBAT XP SO I CAN SKIP GIBBERLINGS.. I NEED EVERY XP AND YOU NEED TO STOP ME..".. Me, Stun, Hiro, Volly, Indiria and the caffienated owl guy all enjoy the combat xp without meta gaming the **** out of games. Nobody defending combat xp actually wants it to break the game.. We just want meaningful progression for our choices. It's only people in the non-combat xp crowd to have a problem with meta gaming systems and seem to not be able to help themselves.. despite the level cap.. Wrong again.. It's been stated about 1000 times why this argument is crapThat's not a rebuttal. I could just as easily say that it's been stated about 2000 times why this argument is good. And neither of us would be correct, because the necessity of combat XP for game (and combat) enjoyment is a matter of PERSONAL PREFERENCE. Stop acting like your position is the only reasonable one. Combat XP is a good reward system for RPG gameplay. That doesn't mean it's the only good reward system. OE is doing something different - good for them! Let's help them succeed instead of bitching endlessly about one single feature as if the game will live or die based on its inclusion. The number wasn't important.. try to deflate your ego a bit.. The person in question knows exactly what rebuttals have been made to his argument.. he is rehashing old tales and knows it. If you want to be pedantic about the number then go ahead. I wasn't trying to raise a good rebuttal but remind him of the last 4 closed threads of discussion we had on that argument already. Oh I just pulled a number out of nowhere - no pedantry intended. My point wasn't that any specific number of statements had been made, just that his comment was thoroughly unhelpful and assumed his own position was right when in reality both arguments have merit and it comes down to personal preference. Not really sure where you get egotism from that.. :3 EDIT: Sorry about the long-ass quote, I'm on mobile and trimming those is quite difficult when they're embedded like that. -

The gloom and doom around here is truly astonishing. I'm all for a reasoned debate over the merits of combat XP as a reward mechanic (though I think it's beating the powdered remains of a dead horse's skeleton at this point)... But all these people saying the game will absolutely suck if it doesn't have combat XP... "I'll probably play it for about 10 minutes if it doesn't have combat XP"... Really? REALLY? C'mon now. -
Yes, now I have committed myself to fixing all my bugs today, which I will regret Now I feel bad--I always do more damage to my codebase after about 6pm. Take your time, guys, we just wanted to know the status. Sleep is undervalued in software! Well it's like 12 noon where they are right now haha. Thanks for the update, Mac!

Tbh I'd be ok with any solution that solved the "better to let them fall than to heal them" problem. But I haven't seen any suggestions that really make sense other than bleedout or enemies (sometimes) attacking the fallen. And of the two, enemies attacking the fallen is less punitive because it lets you do something about it. Would improve the experience considerably IMO.

Sensuki's Suggestions #019: Desynchronized Character Movement
Matt516 replied to Sensuki's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Yup, this would have a huge quality of life improvement for minimal effort. Do it, OE. -
Replace Crit Chance with Accuracy (Crit Chance doesn't make sense with how the combat resolution system works), halve the proposed bonuses (they're too good right now), and I'm on board.

Discussion: the PoE beta xp system
Matt516 replied to IndiraLightfoot's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I mean... it really make no difference whatsoever to any of the various arguments about mechanics. Spiritual Successor or no, OE really doesn't need to include any particular features of the IE games except for the ones they specifically mentioned in the Kickstarter. -
Seemingly the same goes for Monday and Tuesday. Speculation seems pointless IMO. Maybe it's going really well and they wanted to finish up some new features they hadn't previously planned on pushing out with this build. Or maybe the hard drive with the latest build caught on fire. There's really no way of knowing.

Just wanted to point out that we do agree that the devs should follow their vision and stick to their guns on this, Gromnir. Wasn't able to tell from your post if you thought I was in the Pro Combat XP camp - somewhat sounded like it. -
Discussion: the PoE beta xp system
Matt516 replied to IndiraLightfoot's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I'm glad we agree. We disagree on its status as an indispensable reward system though - which seems to be the matter at hand. -
True, if perhaps infrequent. So it should really be a part of the AI scripting. Agree 100% - I should've said that in my original post, my bad. Yeah - certain enemy types (especially wild animals) should keep attacking after you go down sometimes. Would add interesting tactical considerations ("Save Bob! He's down and the lion's eating him!") and completely fix the screwed up healing incentives that currently plague the game. Letting a character go down would be bad, period. Which is as it should be.

They have a vested interest in this game being better, and in the forums giving feedback and new ideas, they're obviously using the time for a reason. Maybe because everyone expects a significant jump in quality per patch, and they want to deliver that. Nope, they just don't really see the BB as particularly important. I'm not being grumpy or facetious, I honestly think it was a stretch-goal gimmick that is now a pesky afterthought. Or maybe they just don't want to put a patch out until it makes sense to do so? I want a new patch too, but I don't want them to put it out before it's ready. Commenting on OE's attitude towards the Beta without any inside information seems rather pointless, not to mention disingenuous.

Class and Race of your main toon. Poll.
Matt516 replied to Lioness's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I mean... In the IE games you had to have a multiclass to have a half decent warrior priest because of the silly "only fighters get decent thac0 or bab score" rule. In PoE, just roll a priest, pump might, con, and whichever stat gives accuracy, kit them out in armor with a big whopping weapon, and go to town. This is coming from someone who almost always plays BG as a Dwarven fighter/cleric. The PoE system is better for us.
