Interesting thought. Never really thought of it that way before, but it is rather spot on. We are after all talking about "unessential" stuff, like entertainment and not a new malaria vaccine. Patronage was, back then, a single wealthy individual/family giving money to an artist so they could get stuff (and probably political/superiority points vis a vis other nobles or wealthy bourgeoisie). In fact, the big publisher model is a lot closer to it than kickstarter is. I usually lump publishers together with banks, insurance companies and pension funds. They have money that they need to invest and want as much money as possible back in return. Some of them specializes and invests real estate, shares or dubious schemes like credit default swaps. Some invest in projects, like land development, ship building, movie making or video games. Usually run by suits who sometimes engages "experts", who works in advisory roles on what is currently most likely to give a return in their market segment. People may have different motives for supporting at least some kickstarter projects. I definitely don't expect to get my money back, much less with interest. If I'm lucky, I might get something close to moneys worth of entertainment back, but I'm not expecting it.

Removing the original soundtrack alone made that trailer worth watching

Are you saying only Kickstarter contributer are getting the game? No post-launch purchase option? That's even more stupid than I thought. No you grumpypuss I mean if nobody dared take a risk, development would never have started in the first place. If it turns out good, everybody, including the risk takers and those who watch from the sideline might benefit from it. If it's a disaster, well tough luck, no harm done.

Witcher 2 still caught me by surprise Still, who doesn't dare doesn't win. It's not like anybody is twisting peoples arms to make a contribution

I didn't even know you could import old games. Maybe in some distant grimdark future I might reinstall the game.

Pretty much this. Ideas don't sell, a proven track record of being able to deliver does.

Not in the plans at the moment, but I'll keep it in mind. It's supposed to be very nice there in early August

Same here. Just checked my email Having also bought flight tickets to Europe and a week in a nice hotel in Hong Kong, I probably shouldn't spend anymore this month

Trine. What a nice surprise. Had forgotten that I picked it up with some other games in the Frozenbyte Indie Bundle.

For some reason I always associate Phantasie with Mike Oldfield. Probably because that was what was playing on my cd player in the background during that epic last battle against Nikademus. I seem to remember something about a spell that could summon an old ally to your aid too. Maybe my memory is just playing tricks on me. It's been a few years since that game was new.

Punitive retribution... bad jokes ahoy! Q: What sits on the bottom of the Ocean and shakes? A: A nervous wreck. Q: What's a sign that you have an irrational fear of icebergs? A: You start having water-tight compartments installed in your pants. In England in 1912 a guy found a lamp and suddenly a genie popped out. The genie said, "I will grant you one wish." The guy was not well-to-do, so he said, "I want to live in luxury for the rest of my life." "Fine," said the genie, "Here's a first class ticket for the Titanic." What goes down well with ice? The Titanic! Titanic was about to sink. People on the ship were shouting, crying, running and praying. A passenger went up to the captain to ask him a question. Passenger: How far are we from land? Captain: Two miles... Passenger: Only two miles, then why are these fools making so much noise. I can swim that far easily. Captain:.....Uh???? Passenger: In which direction should I swim? Captain: Downward..

Cartoon/Anime/Comic settings you would like to see a rpg set in
Gorth replied to C2B's topic in Computer and Console
The only one mentioned in my list that has a game at all is Conan (a crappy mmo) Oh, forgot to add one of my all time favourites, Francois Bourgeon's 'The Cyann Saga' None of those on my lists is likely to get anything but an 'M' rating though -

I don't know much Anime. Saw 'Akira' once and didn't "get it"... South Park is a WIP, so we can leave that one out too. As for Comics, I would love some older stuff, like Conan or Richard Corbens 'Den' setting. Maybe 'Blueberry' for those into all things Western and M -
I chose the $250 tier (plus $15) just for the autographed version of the box. I need to work out what the deal is with two alternative $150 tiers.

Rise of the Triad (if it's the same game) was released in 1995. Thats even newer than Games Workshops from 1993. Wasn't Wasteland released in 1988? Sheesh, any real gamer would know that

You get that sinking feeling... Of the three sisters, only Olympic lived to see the end of WWI. Ironically, she was the first launched. Titanic struck an iceberg and sank, Britannic struck a mine/torpedo and sank. Poor track record. Edit: I love this old picture showing Titanic during construction in Belfast, sitting just next to its "sister" Olympic Titanic being built
