Marriage is a government issue here. It gives tax breaks and other things to the married individuals, because the government assumes that you will need the help to support the children that will probably be forthcoming.
So while people can be married in a church they still need a license from the state before they are considered to be legaly married. Thus the debate about gay marriage in our government today. Also state judges can marry people, you do not need a minister or rabbai or whatever to be married.
As a matter of course almost all "churches" over here that I know of will outright deny marrying any gay people, so the people who are members of these churches tend to agree with the "church" and so do not support gay marriage.
