I keep hoping Germany will be more competitive soon. They've got some real NHL talent on the roster now, but Hecht and Sturm are injured. I'm hoping in 4 years they'll be able to pull even with Switzerland.
  2. It's a turn based strategy game, kind of a mix between Civilization and Risk. I played the 1st one and enjoyed it. It had a lot of actual history in it. It's been awhile, but I think events followed a historical timeline, unlike the research of Civilization.

Have you been watching the Olympic games Volourn? The hockey seems pretty real to me. There is some awesome play happening.
  4. Shopping Malls often do have cameras, and I think that's fine. For the apartment cameras, are you sure he didn't mean in the common areas? Also, if someone is on probation, a camera in the house doesn't sound like such a bad idea. Eh, the guy is just a police chief, that's not going to lead to any laws being passed.

Honestly, I was initially ticked off about the Olympics putting the NHL on hold. But now that I've watched a few games, I can say that it really is a special event. Now that there are more than 2 competitive teams, it's a very special tournament. It's also only a problem every 4 years.

Is this Tuumo Ruutu's brother? Jagre has always been a pretty tough guy, so I'm glad to hear he's ok. There has been some excellent games so far. I'm amazed at the competition level, I just wish Germany could get up there. Switzerland has arrived.
  7. Most guilds are created for idiots. Have you ever seen a raid guild? It's basically an idiot savant leading a bunch of idiots. He's a savant because he somehow convinced people he knows what he's doing. He does not.
  8. Name: Rodrigo Game: RIFTS Occupation: Assassin Rodrigo was my longest PnP character. He was basically a great shot and he had some excellent gear. He was outfitted completely with some alien tech (Narubi?) but I can't remember the name because it's been years since I played RIFTS. He had a plasma rifle, stealth armor, a jet pack, and always a briefcase sized bomb in case it got hairy. Against large creatures like Gargoyles he would zoom in, place a charge, and zoom away like a gnat. He also got pretty good with his plasma sword. I think I was level 10 before our group broke up.
  9. Wow, you really make it sound like the entire world is cracking under the pressure of Gay and Lesbian rights. This is a group that faces open discrimination, and this is a very tiny battle towards ending that. I also never said Blizzard agreed with me. They sided with me. They are a company, there are probably a multitude of opinions within the company. Sincerity is not important in a business decision, only the final outcome.
  10. Wrong again, it wasn't the usage of the term 'gay' that sprang Blizzard reaction, it was the whole idea behind the guild, which has no place in the game and therefore is against the rules. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> This argument has now officially gone in circles. It has already been explained why this guild was necessary. Blizzard originally agreed with you, but now they have conceded and issued an apology. You have your opinion, we have ours, but unfortunately for you Blizzard has sided with us.

If Switzerland beats Germany, they will actually be the 2nd seed in their bracket. That's unbelievable.

As I'm watching Switzerland beat Canada 2-0, I think it's a good time to say Pronger has no self control, and Bertuzzi is a goon. They should have take Shanahan. Who the hell is Paul DiPetrio?
  13. I was pretty disappointed with the anticlimactic ending. I understand that was the point they were going for, but I like actual endings in movies. Bill Murray was also a bit unbelievable as a Don Juan.
  14. I can't think of many Atari developed products lately anyways. It would seem like the publishing arm is good, though, since the last few games I've bought have had the Atari logo on it.
  15. That's actually 4th grade now. The entire year is devoted to that. White US history begins in 8th grade.
  16. I completely agree with Mothman on this point. This is why it makes sense that a player can form a guild that states they are open and support the gay community. Blizzard can't get rid of discrimination overnight, so they offer a sanctuary. That's why they relented on the issue. Mothman is right, we need a guild like this.
  17. After working with mentally disabled students, I conditioned myself to remove that word from my vocabulary. I don't think it's cool to take any word that defines a special group and use it as a slur. It belittles those people and whoever you are throwing the term at. I have no problem calling someone an idiot. That term is designated specifically for idiots, and so it doesn't belittle anyone other than the person being an idiot.

Hitting is part of the actual game, while fighting is most definitely not. When a fight starts, the whistle blows and play stops. That means it really isn't part of the game. I play hockey in an adult league, and there is no fighting allowed. Occassionally fisticuffs will break out, but it's broken up quickly. It would not hurt pro hockey to do the same. Hitting is a big part of the game. It's a physical sport. Players are skating very quickly and there are bound to be collisions. Coming out on top of those collisions is an important skill in the NHL. A teeth rattling hip check or run into the boards is entirely different than a fight. I do think fights will eventually be phased out of hockey. They are way less common in the junior leagues, and I believe they are way down in the NHL. The bruisers are more of a liability in the new NHL.
  19. That was funny. Much funnier than the actual picture.
  20. Words are tricky. It has a lot to do with context. There is a difference between using a word in a humorous way and using it in a negative way. Unfortunately "gay" is one of those words may be funny to use in certain contexts, but can also be very offensive. In order to prevent offending people, I've always recommended that it not be used in a humorous context. I feel the same way about a certain N word that is used racially.
  21. Sniping is pretty tough, but it's by far my favorite kit. I think I like the second unlockable rifle better than the new third one. The range isn't as good, but it seems more evident when I actually get a hit. I also need to have a really good ping rate to be effective. If it's a bad server, sniping is a waste of time. I try leading guys, I just wish it was more clear if I'm actually hitting. I've sent a couple choppers down, but I can never tell if I'm killing the pilot or just getting the last bit of vehicle damage.
  22. Yeah, and down goes freedom of speech. Banning somebody for using the word "gay" negatively is among the stupidest reasons. "Saying something like: "Why would you do that? That's so gay!" For one thing, the word used in that context has evolved into generally something that is stupid. If you're going to scream "homophobe"! and ban them everytime somebody says something like that, then you really need to reconsider your position. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> So does that mean you are ok with people being racist and attacking religious groups? There used to be pretty common racial slurs, but society has managed to slowly weed them out of the mainstream media. It may infringe on the "Freedom of Speech" but it sure helps with bigotry and discrimination. Using "gay" in a negative way is not a civil right, particularly in an online game with rules and regulations.
  23. I'm sure this has been posted already, but I haven't gotten through the rest of the thread. 20% of $1,000,000 on the PC = $200,000 12.2% of $2,000,000 on the console = $240,000 Is it really better making a game for the PC? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think this would depend on the costs of making the game. Is it cheaper to make a PC game? Does that $40,000 get eaten up by advertising? $40,000 is one salary for a year for a pretty low end person (or a dozen testers , so who knows. )
  24. I see no reason to reveal your sexuality unless you are looking for a partner to begin with, which, suprise, is against the rules of the game. Blizzard shouldn't apologize for this... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> This has nothing to do with revealing your sexuality or finding a date online. People in general chat and in many large guilds openly bash gay people. The term "gay" is used in a negative way on a daily basis. This woman was creating a guild to get away from that talk. I don't have to disclose my sexual preference to be offended by such behavior. It's not acceptable to bash people based on their race or religion, so why is it ok to make rude comments about being gay?
  25. I applied the patch, so I'll have to jump on the new server this weekend. Will it be ready by then? Jumpers have always driven me nuts. BF2 for the most part rewards tactics over reflexes, but bunny hopping could ruin a good ambush.
