So... Torchlight 2?
Thats one thing I do think hurts D3, the lack of a healer.

Wait... you're a moderator and you posted this? >_ QQ? Really? Whats me being a mod have to do with anything? Do you think we are employees of Obsidian? Or we shouldnt be allowed to post our opinions? I'm sorry - I guess I'm placing too high a standard on being a moderator. I would think a moderator would be one seeking to stay largely agnostic on post content outside of breaking forum rules, and would be someone who, at best, encourages discussion. Describing anyone stating their opinions as "QQ"ing just, well, seems both juvenile and un-moderator-like. It has nothing to do with your given opinion a subject. It has to do with etiquette, decorum and leading by example. Ah, theres your problem.

Thats exactly what I was saying. I could have chosen to gimp my Embermage by ignoring Focus and dumping all my points into Stength. I didnt, but I could have.

Did Obsidian explain how the laws of physics in PE allowed the boobplate to be realistic for the fantasy setting in which some use magic to fight monsters? (Monsters that may or may not use boobplate and may or may not also face mundane attacks from fighters and such) Because I do have the feeling that mundane stuff like metallic armor works basically the same as in our world. Artistic license aside. And pandering to stuff like "I want to look pretty, damned be immersion.". Or fantasy for children like Harry Potter. Maybe Obsidian keeps reading feedback by the backers that take the time to post about the topic, in this case, of cooldowns, and they decide to reconsider because the arguments given are really solid and can fit the design of the game. Or maybe not and they won't fold like a beach chair to the avalanche of QQ. What?

C'mon. Do you think that concept drawing for a P:E character existed without P:E input? In a matter of hours they folded like a beach chair to the avalanche of QQ about how boobplate wasnt realistic in a fantasty game where you use magic and fight monsters. Were talking about something that less than .5% of the 50k backers commented on.

Cooldowns to replace resting sounds acceptable but there is still this potential problem. Then again I can live with it(sort of). Cooldowns to replace resting is just sematics. If an artificial time limit is introduced that forces players to stand around with no way to "advance time" (rest) then that diminished that classes ability. Using BG2 as an example, how many battles occured in 8 game hours? A lot. So because they want to remove the players choice of how to play, casters are relegated to either "saving" spells or blowing thier spells. Both results end up being the caster is diminished because they have nothing to do during encounters. I wonder if such artificial limitations will be placed on melee classes. I mean, its overpowering if my warrior can cleave all day long or my archer can launch endless vollies on exploding arrows, right?

What you did today
^Heh, I thought the same thing. I remember reading an article about a little girl whos mother had died so the little girl went and sat on the railroad tracks so she "could be with mommy". Understandibly, the train engineer was really messed up over the whole thing.

Do you have any ideas on it? A cooldown by definition is a timer based mechanic. How would you change that? To me it seem like a punitive action from the developer to remove "rest spam". Who cares about "rest spam" in a single player game? Its up to the individual to play the game as they wish. I suppose a next logical step would be to introduce a checkpoint save system so people cant "save spam".

This pretty much sums up my feelings too. Depending on implementation, now Im just going to be standing outside of every room waiting for my abilities to come off cooldown before I proceed. Crafting (specifically being able to turn a commom barrel sword into a legendary) is also a bit of a bummer. IMO, it cheapens the legendaries that will be in the game. Its not special if anyone can craft anything into a legendary.

Update #13: 50K Backers Brings New Mega Dungeon, Stretch Goals, and More! (PayPal too!)
To be fair, that example was starting out with a legendary weapon (+5) and making it a little better (+6). Staring out with a mundane weapon and crafting it up to a legendary weapon makes me a little nervous. Seems a bit like MOTB where you wind up with some insane weapon with 3 different kinds of elemental damage attached.

Are you kidding me? You specifically said that it becomes even more an issue when the caster is your main character. Which is what I'm confuting here. Thats because we were talking about casters. I thought that was obvious what with the thread topic. Look, this is obviously going to devolve into a pissing contest so lets just agree to disagree. Everyone wins.

What? Where did I say anything remotely resembling that? If you were reading my posts as closely as you claim you would realize I am simply refuting the posts about caster classes hanging out in the back until the time is ripe to fire off their single spell before going back to doing nothing. Just so we can get back on track, I am equally opposed to any class doing nothing for several rounds.

let me spare you the effort. I described the system here: http://forums.obsidi...80#entry1217563 ...and mentioned it again at least two times now. About the second part of your post... What Infinitron said. Ah, I finally get what you guys were trying to say. And I disagree even more. IMO, the player most closely identifies whith the character they roll. Sure, there is plenty to do in party management but they arent "your guy". The others were added by the developer to flesh out the party but the character you roll is the one you become most attached to and having that character standing there doing nothing would detract from my enjoyment.

To be completly honest, no, I did not read all of your previous posts. I just picked up on the conversation on page 16 without reading the previous 15 pages. I will try to look back at your earlier posts. What I am responding to is your reply to my first post: I can't say I agree at all. That's exactly what makes Dragon Age so painful to manage with the AI completely off compared to Baldur's gate 2. In Dragon Age you are constantly cycling through characters that have very short cooldowns, while in Baldur's Gate you usually set a generic target for each of your men and *then* when it's actually useful to do so, you pick some special ability/spell/item to use. I read this as you advocating for a system where casters dont do anything until "the time is right". My position is that that would be boring for the caster players and there is no reason for them to wait around doing nothing, or auto attacking with their sling when they should be doing what casters do, casting. Not every spell is equally powerfull just like not every warrior ability is equally powerful. Not every healer is equal either. It could be easily argued that a cleric is even more powerful than a warrior. They can wear the best armor, buff themselves and other out the wazoo and directly call upon the divine power of their god at will. Assuming there is a similar type class in P:E, do you think they should be gimped too?

[merged] Vancian Magic System and cooldowns
Im not implying anything, thats why I asked you to clarify your position. But not every spell clears the battlefield. Some just hit one opponent, some put them to sleep, some force them to attack their friends. A player could choose to use their nuke on the kobold, but then its gone. A smarter caster would choose the appropriate spell for the circumstance. Choices. As far as I understand, you have arbitrarily decided that regardless of level, casters can level mountains and need to be artifically held in check. In my perfect world casters would be like D&D sorcerers. You have a limited amount of spell you can cast of each level but you dont have to preselect them. Instead you will have a pool of known spells that can be cast at will, one per round of course, until you have exhausted those slots and then they must be replenished though some mechanic. IMO, that limits using your nuke 100% of the time while not forcing the caster into doing nothing.

[merged] Vancian Magic System and cooldowns
No, it's not, i said it myself and never argued otherwise. You could easily pile up a cooldown system on top of a Vancian one(or variations, like the already mentioned Chaos Chronicles). Still, I strongly disagree with the idea that every character should have something special to do every single round, for the reasons I already pointed. It made Dragon Age painful to play without AI assist. Beside, I'm not sure why playing a specific class as main character should be that relevant, in a game where you manage a whole party in any case. Yeah, yeah, i know, they said that they plan to make the solo way viable, but that could mean a lot, not necessarily that a solo player can beat any fight. And let's face it: only sociopaths or people who's going for the fifth playthrough will go for solo in a game like this. Just so I understand your position better. You dont feel a caster should be able to cast every round, right? Does that extend to all classes? Should a healer be only able to heal every few rounds? Should an archer only be able to fire arrows every few rounds? Whats going on during the "down time"?

[merged] Vancian Magic System and cooldowns
And that's exactly the point of this kind of system, in fact. Right, but its not all or nothing. You could instead cast your 5th level Spell of Minor Doom or your first level Magic Projectile of Doom. Standing around waiting until everything is in a nice little pile before dropping your nuke would be awful for anyone playing a caster as their main.

[merged] Vancian Magic System and cooldowns
The examples you guys give are to me exactly why a Vancian system works. You have a limited amount of times you cast cast something before they are gone (until you replenish them, however that may be). Sure you can cast your 10th level Spell of Doom on that pile of worms but that would be stupid and you will be without that spell until replenishing.
