  1. For our resident jerries, are german voiceovers in german games usually as bad as the english ones? Or do you tend to spend more money on the domestic versions?
  2. Battlefield:BC system is a textbook example of unnescessary game mechanics. (you dont have healthpacks or regenerating health, instead you click a button to shoot up some health injection that you have an unlimited supply of..as mkreku described) I think they started with healthpacks, realised it was a dumb idea but decided they didnt want to ditch the injection assets so they went for a really redundant compromise. Kind of like having a feature in a game where you constantly have to tie your shoelaces so you wont trip on them and die.
  3. SOMEONE has never played Call of Duty 4
  4. We played a real old school game yesterday; Men of War. I dont know what the genre is called, its not an RTS, but its realtime strategy with alot of specifik control over each solider. You have an inventory, you can switch weapons, use vehicles and even manually aim and shoot. You can play 4 people in co-op, which was pretty sweet What ruins the game is completely horrible voiceacting. Easily the worst Ive ever heard, it sounds like two german programmers with poor english language skills just took a mic an recorded it all themselves. But maybe someone will find a way to delete the sound files, so you can play the game without collapsing into hysterical giggles everytime someone says anything.
  5. Why the hell did Adama give guns to Gaius Baltar? That can only lead to trouble.
  6. Thats just plain old linear encounter-based level design. The benefit is that it allows the designers to control the pacing very effectively. L4D uses the exact same method but with a random generator that triggers slightly different encounters along the way. It never bothered me in GoW or GoW2. But Devil may cry 4 did it really badly and blatantly. You literally walk into a room, doors close, enemies spawn, fight, enemies die, doors open into the next room which does exactly the same thing. That was baad level design.
  7. What do you mean boxes?
  8. I thought the demo was very promising, but I find it very difficult to get the units to go where I want them to and face the right way. You can have a perfectly aligned line of soldiers, move them 100m forward and all fo a sudden they're standing diagonaly with their backs to the enemy. Or once when it was going really bad and I had to hit the retreat button... and my soldier responded by running straight into the enemy lines and getting butchered.
  9. One idea that makes sense is that you should only be allowed to make a decision if you have a clear understanding about the details of the matter at hand. We have people voting for politicians without any real idea of their political standpoints, and we have politicians voting on laws about things they dont understand. The recent "FRA law" that was voted through a while ago is a prime example of the latter. Very few, if any, of the politicians that voted knew what they were voting on and the consequences thereof. We could have a system where you would have to answer a small test, 10 questions or so, to check that you understand the basics, before youre allowed to vote.
  10. DX levels were marvels of failiure due to its poor gameplay. You could sneak your way through them or you could shoot, but neither worked very well. The sneaking was a frustrating trial-and-error horror of seemingly randomly triggered alarms, while the shooting was clunky and awkward. Everyone just ended up getting the amazingly imbalanced lightsabre so you could rush and chop your way through it
  11. Oh, come on! Not that old chestnut again, its so boring, trite and predictable. Totally unlike the amnesia angle, which is perhaps the largest breakthrough in game storytelling since kidnapping princesses. And unlike dying from an alien STD, which has been a staple of gaming since the C64, we have never seen a character suffering from amnesia in a game before. Just imagine the possibilities! Its amazing!
  12. Maybe you begin the game as a vaguely blue man waking up in a mortuary, faff around in a depressing and weird city for the whole game, only to later find out that you're Shepard suffering from amnesia? And in the end you have to have to fight the embodiment of your own penial gland?
  13. I think it went down like this http://www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/18964 Mass Effect is not Knights of the old republic. Kotor was made as a standalone game whose sales made lucasarts interested in a sequel. That sequel ended up being made by a completely different company that decide to start over with a clean slate so theyd be free to do what they wanted. ME2 is a seuqel planned from the beginning and made by the exact same people who made the first game, and its been in production since before ME was released. For them to introduce a new main character at this point would completely break the cohesion of the trilogy. Ah freck.... why am I even writing this, OF COURSE bioware are just teasing us. Its so blatantly obivous that its not even worth discussing.
  14. Mass Effect was awesome. You're free to have any opinion you like, but the conensus in the gaming world is that it was an excellent game with an entertaining story. Replacing Shepard with another PC wouldnt be creative, you would would essentially just replace one blank slate with another blank slate. The only identifying mark the character has is the name, everything else is completely changeable in every single way. With that in mind, replacing him/her makes no sense whatsoever. Not that they would ever replace Shepard, he/she is essential to the story and BioWare created Mass Effect with a sequel in mind.
  15. I think you pretty much nailed their setup there. Predictable yes, but not boring. It an entertaining space adventure action, not a nobel prize winning novel. It doesnt have to redefine sci-fi to be an awesome game.
  16. Phh! Like they would actually kill off the main character the first thing they do? Come on, this is a teaser trailer and this is just a setup to create some buzz. I think its quite safe to say that all rumours of Shepards death are greatly exaggerated. BioWare are no more likely to kill Shepard than Epic are to kill Marcus Phoenix.
  17. agreed, but there is a limit on difficulty, after which a game becomes tedious and not very fun. ranting time!! There are two basic archetypes of players, those who see games as a challenge and enjoy difficult games, and those who see games as entertainment and just want to relax and have some fun. Between those two runs a stepless scale where each of us fit in, the position on the scale depending on mood and other circumstances. There is a tendency among the challenge players to look down upon those on the other side of the spectrum. Some dont even realise there are other types of players.
  18. THERES A DEMO???????!!!!!!!!!!! ...oh ****! it's steam
  19. We beat all the campaigns on expert last week, mostly it was just our resident quakemaster that lived through the ending except in "death toll" where another guy made it aswell. But I dont like playing on that difficulty since you have to be so serious and coordinated. Theres always alot of bitching and angry shouting from players who take it way too seriously. I would have made it through "death toll" aswell, but my friends were so pissed that I didnt play as good as them so they refused to revive me.
  20. Sometimes, you just got to pirate. Like in the case of Battlestar Galactica. You cant get the sci-fi channel in sweden and no channel has bought the rights to air season 4, so in order to watch it, I have to download it.
  21. The only reason this game isnt just called "Hellblaster: Apocalypse" or some such is that they're fishing for that "brand recognition" bullsh*t the corporates love so much. I think it should be illegal to blatantly exploit classic works like this, it makes me angry every time I hear of it.
  22. Well, if you enjoy ye olde english fantasy gibberish then, yes the writing will probably not bother you. For the rest of us, it's less enjoyable.
  23. I was dumb enough to try the demo, it felt very amateurish and the writing was ridiculous.
  24. Dudes, this is Sweden, the lawyers dont make anything in the vicinity of millions. We have a sensible judiciary system, remember?
  25. Apparently, the prosecution screwed up earlier today which means they might have to drop half the charges. However, this trial is just at the lowest court level and nothing that happens there will have any impact on what happens when they appeal and go to the "hovr
