Gamespot Rumor: Troika shutting its doors
ShadowPaladin V1.0 replied to Gryphcon's topic in Computer and Console
Now thats a game I wish I had never played. Everything else just seems a tad on the easy side now.. I'd like to check it out. But come next week I'm going to be snowed under with games (it's not out in the UK for a couple more weeks). -

The "Golden Age" has come and gone - and is unlikely to be reborn anytime soon. It's time we deal with it, kumquatq. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Golden ages are almost always down to nostalgia anyway. This is going to be someones golden age in another 5 years.. I've realy enjoyed my gaming since switching to consoles. I've also played things that I would never have played on the PC (thanks to rentals). And best of all 99% of it has worked out of the box and played through to the end with absolutely no hassles. -

I expect they are waiting to see how the next gen console situation pans out before commiting to a particular one. Or waiting for a bribe from Bill. -

What's your opinion of bugs?
ShadowPaladin V1.0 replied to Zach Morris's topic in Computer and Console
Most of the time thats pretty much irrelevent to how well the game will do. In most cases the initial run of the game is over long before a patch is released which would significantly improve the score. The real problem is that reviewers dont include the bugs in their overall scores. TOEE should have never scored more than about 40% based on it's bugginess at release yet some places rated it up in the 90's. -
Another interesting game

Make sure you get the patch. There is a fatal error in the chocobo racing and you wont be able to progress otherwise. unfortunately I'm not really sure where you can get it these days. -
http://shop.gameplay.co.uk/webstore/produc...tle=mercenaries In the trailer the character echanges fire with some soldiers, then jumps into a near by truck, drives along charging a road block. Jumps out kills a few more soldiers, makes his way upto a helipad and gets in. Flies over a tank gets shot down, jumps out kills a few more soldiers, then hits one with his gun before kicking him in the nuts. Not really my sort of game but the trailer was entertaining. If you can see it-you can steal it, use it or blow it up. Mercenaries is an open-ended third person combat-action game set in North Korea where a coup has plunged the troubled nation into chaos. An elite private military company has dispatched a lone mercenary to track down 52 fugitive members of the old hardliner regime -- before they can launch a nuclear attack. Players will have the opportunity to live out their action movie fantasies with Mercenaries, through explosive combat and non-linear gameplay set in massive interactive environments. The nonstop action is complete with a havoc physics engine where the world is always active and the player can affect everything within the environment. Motivated by cash, players can choose alliances as they pilot more than 22 authentic ground and air vehicles, and use more than 30 deadly weapons to hunt down the dangerous enemy combatants. Features: Fifty-two action-packed missions featuring open-ended and explosive gameplay set in the future during a coup in North Korea. The "deck of 52" represents a target for each of these modern-day combat inspired missions. Players must secure the face card for each suit, with the ultimate being the capture of the Ace of Spades. More than 20 authentic ground and air vehicles including helicopters, cars, artillery rocket launchers and tanks. Over 30 weapons including rocket launchers, grenades and shotguns. Players control how they interact within each environment with the ability to use anything within the game. Play as one of three mercenaries including an American or Swedish male or a British female - each character with at least one unique advantage. Choose your alliances between numerous feuding factions. Havoc physics engine allows players to demolish buildings and watch the world around them react as it would in real life. Authentic sound effects recorded at Skywalker Sound.

Suikoden gets UK release.
ShadowPaladin V1.0 replied to ShadowPaladin V1.0's topic in Computer and Console
Well there is PAL 60 like Metroid uses. It's quite likely that something will be done to make localisation easier (and cheaper). Of course if the units come with an independent power supply using a Japanese or US unit isnt much more difficult than plugging in a cart. -
what rpgs are on the horizon?
ShadowPaladin V1.0 replied to NeverwinterKnight's topic in Computer and Console
Jade Empire is the only one I can think of for Xbox. In theory that should be feb/march. Lots of RPGs coming up in the UK, but those are late releases from elsewhere rather than actually new. -
Baldur's Gate vs. Fallout
ShadowPaladin V1.0 replied to Kaftan Barlast's topic in Computer and Console
I think it's a preference of freedom really. When I play I dont see the game as it is , but rather as a framework to support the imagination. If the game dosnt have room for this it feels restrictive. PST is the best example, you dont need to think in PST just click the option that appeals and the game adapts. BG on the hand gave the character as I imagined them a lot of freedom. FO is kind of a balance between the two. Because you are writing for a human character the "humanity" of the game is very obvious. But it still has that open feeling although because it isnt tied to the character it dosnt really make as much sense. Let me see if I can make that clearer. In BG you are born with a destiny. Your character can run away from it or embrace it but it's always going to be part of them and it's always going to cause them to be hunted. Thats ok because it makes sense as part of the character. Now in FO your destiny is to find a water chip to save the vault. Ok lets say my character comes out of the vault , actually enjoys what they see and says screw you vault I dont care what happens to you. By tying the game to the chip you remove the freedom to do that. But there is no reason to feel any sort of closeness to anyone in the Vault either. Quite the opposite really considering you basically get tossed out. -
Bunch of radical fanatics the lot of you (well with an exception or two)

Suikoden gets UK release.
ShadowPaladin V1.0 replied to ShadowPaladin V1.0's topic in Computer and Console
In both cases they were planned. Delayed then ultimately canceled. I know because I spent about an hour in each case talking on the phone to the respective companies. I've still got my pre order slips somewhere. -
What's your opinion of bugs?
ShadowPaladin V1.0 replied to Zach Morris's topic in Computer and Console
Same for Arcanum.. Troika just dont seem to be very good at the technical side of games making. I dont think developers wrap the project up early enough to devote time exclusively to hunting down bugs. Perhaps they should but thats easier said than done. Think of it like this. If you havnt got your roof on yet, that your roof might have a leak or two is the least of your worries... -

Thats the one. I'm hoping the different elements of gameplay will balance out nicely. But I really want to see the chariot racing.

ShadowPaladin V1.0 replied to Darth Reven's topic in Computer and Console
Well there is a McDonalds next to PCWorld at least there are no calories in TOEE :D -
No link sorry read about it in a magazine. As for what type of game... Don't really have enough to say much more than I did in the first post. I'll fill in some more details when it's released.

ShadowPaladin V1.0 replied to Darth Reven's topic in Computer and Console
I finally bought TOEE today. And got a another copy of NwN in the same package. No wonder that game has inflated sales its packaged with everything Atari related. Considering I paid about the same as a McDonalds for both I doubt I will be too disapointed. -
This one looks rather good. Story split over two characters. One that fights and one that sneaks around ,talks to people and dons various disguises to get into places they shouldnt. Combat looks incredible. It's very viscreal, huge range of moves and killing attacks and the animals actually fight like animals. Tigers will knock you to the floor then try to rake your insides out. Elephants will grab you in their trunks and crush the life out of you. Chariot racing , havnt seen that in a game for a while. You can fight while trying to steer your chariot. Usual large range of weapons, different backdrops all set against the intrigue of the murder of Julius Ceaser (so it's sort of historical). Definately one thats going on the shopping list. January might be a sucky month for games, but february looks like it's going to more than make up for it.

Most Disapointing Game Ever
ShadowPaladin V1.0 replied to Darth Reven's topic in Computer and Console
As someone who dosnt worship at the holy alter of Fallout I dont think it would make a huge ammount of difference. But then again I've never been one to be tied to rules and playing the FF series where the rules change from one to the other just goes to show that a franchise dosnt need to keep the same rules to keep the feel of the franchise. Personally I prefered FOT's more dynamic real time (although I really missed a pause function I got over it) to FO's boardgame like combat. As long as the flavour of the post apocalyptic setting is captured , what rules drive the game (as long as they work and are not clunky) are not important to me. -

ShadowPaladin V1.0 replied to Darth Reven's topic in Computer and Console
Can't realy think of any. I was disapointed when TORN was canceled as that was the first time I had seen it happen first hand. After that I took a much more pragmatic approach so BG 3/ FO 3 etc were not disapointing. You could cancel anything with the possible exception of FFXII and I wouldnt feel particularly bad about it personally.
