    FYI, Magic Candle handles the split party by giving the ability for the player to "flip" to the "non-adventuring" characters when the "main party" is not in combat. The non adventuring members will be at the location appropriate for the job in the town you left them. eg. smith for forging, library for researching. I don't think there is too much interaction for the crafting players other than stop whatever they are doing. I don't remember exactly what happen if you stop their job, I think they will rejoin your party after "x" amount of time passed or walk around the town they are in and start another job.

     

    I think split party can be an idea that can be further developed. Personally, I would like more "game"/activity for the non adventuring party integrating some of element from that old, old Koei strategy games like Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Nobunaga's Ambition. Like NPCs would have some "off line"/non-adventuring stats they can develope by doing jobs/quest. So if the player decide to rotate them out for other duties like running a shop, would improve their "business skill" + some extra change in the pocket. And when you get your stronghold, you can have the guy you groom for running a business to take charge of the treasury to improve your domain's income.

     

    A more elaborate version could involve a character volunteer as guards and with improved skill in "military leadership", your NPC can become guard captain in certain city thus giving you some mid game benefit of know the guard captain in a major city. And in late game, you could run into the problem your NPC friend has found his life calling as a guard captain and kind of leave the adventuring to you. A further complication can be in late game, your decision made you an enemy of the city you former ally is now defending making him an antagonist/enemy.

     

    Hmm, thinking as simple as possible now: Could an overview world map be shown, with no "walking around" in cities at all but instead have some sort of "Location" based stuff. You'd be able to set out tasks and go to the shop or tell your characters to go somewhere. If ambushed in an ally you would get to a respective "Area" (like random battles in early Final Fantasy, but the battle screen would be from an isometric real time view) or if you enter a "Special Building" or the "Sewers" you get thrown to that area, but mostly just top down city view and direct feedback. You'll also get a better sense of "What to do?" and "What area is what area?" (In Baldur's Gate I was jumping from area to area, reading my journal and loosing sense of direction; 'Where was that darn NPC now again...'). Although fun in a sense I wanted better explanation of locations (this was fixed in Baldur's Gate II, where locations have names, but could there be more "Legend" information?).

    Could you give Rogues some sort of support role a la:

     

    Fighter can toss the Rogue (e.g., give him a quick burst dash movement speed, as if being pushed forward) onto the enemy which gives "extra perks" in damage. Could the Rogue, with herbalism focus, be best at using "re-invigorate" regardless to heal "knocked out" party members and "Heal" their Stamina by acting as some steroid buffer (if effect potions have a short timespan).

  4. Kind of like scientists then? There's been discussions on people with guns having a faction hunting wizards (witch hunters if you will, "torch bearers", lynch mobs), wasn't scientists and philosophers considered an abomination for quite a few points in our own history and were hunted just as much as "wizards"?

     

    I know Sokrates had to swallow a vial of poison because he was spreading a philosophy, but P:E has said to not be that far back in history *shrug* would Necromancy apply to mentioned lynch mobs?

    No, wanting deep dragons with some deep personality and not just some "Deep Dungeon Boss #43".

     

    I'm sorry but the japanese wouldn't know deep if it walked up and bit them in the...well you get the idea

     

    I hate the Idea of dragons being magical and intelligent. I always imagined dragons as being predators. I like the idea too to make the dragons behaviour similar to a magpie. This could be a great explanation why do they have such treasure in their caves. I would be glad to fight a dragon or a wyvern ! It would be awesome to be in a village do some quests and suddenly be attacked by a dragon ( not random it should be THE village which after staying awhile talking to ppl it would trigger a dragon which would burn most of the village down or atleast half ) Such a simple quest would be epic ! I would gladly hunt a dragon with some real dragon hunters with balistas and stuff ! THAT WOULD BE AWESOME !

     

    Predatory dragons are pretty common in fiction actually, at least in video games and movies(reign of fire, sucker punch, avatar, dark souls, lair, to name a few). My first and most iconic image of a dragon comes from reading the hobbit as a kid, and I wouldn't mind seeing a dragon like smaug, who is intelligent, but also a greedy jerk with an utter contempt for humanity. It wouldn't have to have magic, but I wouldn't mind if it could talk to you, ask you riddles and toy with you before you fought it,

     

    Two things.

    A, Godzilla

    B, China = Dragons, unsure about Japan

    C, The dragons in Odin Sphere are Smaug times 3 (because they are 3 intelligent seemingly Smaug inspired dragons).

     

    EDIT: Okay maybe times 2.

     

    Dragons are very iconic, and I think it is difficult to beat unless you create a vast back story for this "new ancient beast". Although Leviathan for Mass Effect 3 (I watched a Let's Play of it) manages to create a "Mythical" atmosphere akin to Dragons (I felt a "Lions" vibe from them too).

     

    I did not like the Archdemon in "Dragon Age: Origins" at all, but I love Flemeth in Dragon Age 2. Hint: One of them handles Dragons correctly and intellectually the other is a drooling demon from hell.

    It's fine if my companions drop all their stuff when they die, I mean - what if there's permadeath in PE to some extent? This could happen in BG/BG2, where you might get a petrified party member and not have any means to un-petrify them, at least not right away...

     

    So yeah. Party members should drop their stuff, but it shouldn't require a manual re-acquire when I resurrect said dead fellow.

     

    Having an auto-requip mechanic would be great.

     

    I know it's a minor nitpick, but this seems like one of the obviously obnoxious design flaws in BG.

     

    When a party members dies he dies. In P:E you'll be knocked "unconscious" if you loose all of your stamina. Obsidian has said something like:

     

    "Mortality is going to be a big part of the P:E universe with, little to none, means of resurrection"

     

    What I deduce is that "Rebirth" (as you put it elegantly) is going to be rare at most and most likely story driven if included (In other words no means to resurrect).

     

    Seems to be something like Options that you can choose, simplified like this:

     

    Easy

    Normal

    Hard

     

    With a Sub-Option (Meaning you can choose this option on "Easy/Normal/Hard", not tied to difficulty per say) "Only Stamina/Stamina+Health" Option choosing if you only loose Stamina during battle (you are "knocked out" cold for the duration of the battle, with options to "reinvigorate" your "fallen" companions by replenishing their "Stamina" with magic, potions or time), or if you wish to loose Health as well (which in worst case scenario would equal permanent death for that character, unless there is a "Once a Game" resurrection/rebirth).

     

    More on Stamina:

    * Your character can get "knocked out" if he/she "over-extends" (uses up all abilities, all stamina, needs to take a breather)

    * Your character can loose Stamina if Hit by an enemy too.

    * All actions cost Stamina in battle

     

    Question:

    Should casting Magical abilities cost Stamina as well? (should I make a thread?)

  7. Don't mind a bit of ego stroking as long as it does not become a resource sink. A combination of combat animation and gears would probably be the most straight forward way. Reputation tracking would help if one does not over do it like how Fallout 3 would have half the town complementing you and giving you craps, CONSTANTLY.

     

    If one really want to go the extra mile (IMHO, overboard) and resource allow, perhaps a little bit of heroic / villainous lighting on the character model. Kind of a tone down version of the Jedi/Sith back/spot lighting when when you see yourself in the character page in KOTOR 1 & 2. And this has to be an option that can be turned off since I am pretty sure some people will find this a bit too much :p

  8. In Breathe of Fire 3 your character begins by fighting physically holding his hand over his eyes, looking away, and I think there's some emoticon over his head whilst he his wailing his sword. Through in-game story you'll see your character getting better and better with the sword, and it's pretty badass :)

     

    I think that's out of the scope for P:E but it is hilarious and also a visual development ^^

  9. How will the large cities' content be structured? Most folks enjoyed the freedom and exploration in Athkatla, citing it as one of the high points of the game. While one city will likely be structured this way, opening up into another large, sandbox style city late in the game poses problems for pacing. As we approach the climax of a game, the action needs to increase and become more focused, leading to linearity. A sandbox city disrupts this flow. Do other members see this a problem, and, if so, how do we structure the game to avoid it?

     

    I actually disagree that the game needs to become more and more linear as you near the end, and it's been the cause of me not finishing a lot of CRPGs out there. A point of no return to the final encounter or some such is fine and probably neccesary, but having the last third or half of the game being linear is something I very much dislike.

     

    Interesting thought, could the dungeon be 10 levels and the 11th level is a "direction" in the form of 5 different paths? ("Multiple Dungeon Ending" granted that "Each Ending" is "Different Areas")

  11. Make the mega dundeon optional (This is an absolute must). Make some of the city locations optional. I don't really see the problem here, as long as the devs don't feel the need to drag the story through every single location in the game.

     

    Let's say they make it optional, one of two things could happen:

     

    1) They make a boring dungeon. Some monsters, some puzzles, some phat lewt, but nothing that requires a building of 15 ongoing levels. With not much interesting to see and no reason to go down there story wise, it would just be a nuisance.

     

    2) They make a great, lively dungeon with different factions, their power bases, and interconnecting quests that even branch out into the surrounding countryside. In other words, they fit the entire Temple of Elemental Evil into PE. Why on Earth should that much content be optional? It will take time and resources to do this, and then you give the player no good reason to tackle this thing.

     

    In both cases, I would expect to get some very nice gear from a 15 level dungeon, which makes it harder to balance the game for someone who just followed the story or at least didn't do this stuff - that's bad IMO.

     

    The Shattered Hand in Icewind Dale is one of my favorite areas because of the factions inside battling an eternal undead/ethereal battle amongst themselves. I kind of feel I would've wanted to adventure there during the chaos leading up to the "Shattered" part. And again I wish to bump this thought:

    A) Be BBQ'd

    B) Run fall then become BBQ

    C) Run, hide gain a false sense of security after a few days become BBQ

    D) Hide, find other survivors and become part of a buffet for our Dragon overlords.

    E) Almost magically join up with the last remnants of the military become their cook avoid all combat. Attempt to luck my way through.

    F) Go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over... Wait that's for zombies

    G) Let Christian Bale or Matthew McConaughey handle all the heavy lifting.

    H) Confuse them with a logic puzzle. How can a Dragon and a Donkey breed?

     

    Fantasy RPG version of me would tank it like a champion. Or become BBQ if I fail that pesky saving throw.

     

    Real life vs Fantasy life. I agree and I think it's a great point.

     

    I'm curious about the "Indiana Jones Boulder" which you can't tank but you have to run away from it to survive "Event" type of thing (otherwise you're mashed potato).

  13. Not a fan of victimized heroes myself, I find endogenic motivations much more interesting and inspiring. But if I have to go with it I'd take Osvir's number 6. You could witness/ be caught in some extraordinary event, like a magical cataclysm, the ascension of a god or an epic summoning gone wrong. Only over the course of the game should you come to understand what exactly it was you witnessed.

     

    ^That makes me tingle in all kinds of ways. Also, the Eclipse in Berserk :blink: want to throw up a video but it's kind of disturbing

     

    Maybe this could be an event but not the event.

  14. Another thing I wish to bring up into the light:

     

    This poll is kind of "Fan expectation versus Obsidian expectation", let's give Obsidian a scope or a "deadline" (a cap if you will).

     

    Personally I want Obsidian to create a big enough world by Obsidian's standards (E.g., they have full control, they decide if they want 100 locations or 10 locations). This poll just brings some "light" (or insight) into it for Obsidian (which I think is important). Having an idea of "How many areas should there be?" as early as possible in their development project might be a good thing (Let's say they have created 4 locations thus far, knowing how far they are from "End of the tunnel" might be good for the production planning and organization of workload).
