Anti-Dragon Age 2?
Jasede replied to Cultist's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
No, it's just incidental that any semi-decent RPG would be the direct opposite of Dragon's Age 2, or as I like to call it, "How Not to Make an RPG".- 18 replies

Violence
Jasede replied to Takamori's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I don't really care either way but there should be violence and various degrees of gore for critical hits, certain spells, and so on. Ideally there'd even be different death-animations like in Fallout for certain spells: burning to death, electrocution, disintegration, explosion. But the budget is tight so it's no big deal either way as long as there's some. -
It's okay, the fair maiden defense force is here to defend the honor of imaginary women as we speak.

To give a drastic example: Some guy is shooting holes into my leg. I ask him why. It's because he believes that's fun and okay. Do you really want me to say "I disagree!" and leave it at that? If our resistance to certain elements people wish to introduce on these forums wasn't as hostile it'd never be clear just how destructive their suggestions would be not just to our faith in Obsidian but also our enjoyment in RPGs. I'll take a few bruised egos if it means that the point came across loud and clear. Being civil is certainly of value- but only in context. If people begin to present ideas that vehemently oppose what PE was pitched as I feel they need to be told to quit. It's not like they'll listen to reason or arguments- the romance behemoth still rears its ugly head. Edit: Kymriana, your stance assumes they'd be ready to change their opinion in the first place. But that's not the case. It's set in stone, as hundreds of pages of romance ought to have proven. Even if you brought Plato's mythical ideal arguments that can dispel without any doubt why they shouldn't be in the game (romance being just one of many examples) they'd find reasons to dispel them, no matter how invalid. Some people can't be reasoned with. So they need to be told off because if they're not they'll keep on spouting their suggestions with no resistance.

I'm sure we're all old enough not to be hurt by a piece of text on the internet. Are you the cyber bully police? More often than not the sharpest critics do back up their distaste. However, not all the time. Here's why: A) The opinion / suggested seems so ridiculous to their perspective that they believe it was a troll, so they don't reply with more than a snide remark. B) They already explained their stance before-hand and the topic is just yet another repeat regurgitating a topic for the N-th time (romance, anyone?) C) Some opinions are wrong and dumb. This is a fact. What if my opinion was that the sky is red or that shaking babies was the bee's knees? Why treat outright false opinions as anything more than drivel?

8 companions: is it enough?
Jasede replied to RAE's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 also had an enormous share of unmemorable/forgettable companions you'd never look twice at. Eight companions is enough (even if it's the bare minimum) because it means you'd have to play the game twice to adventure in a party with all of them and see all their scenes. As you said: quality > quantity. -
When there's a dumb idea it's important to speak out against it. Isn't there a Latin saying that translates into "He who says nothing agrees?" Don't answer that, there is. There's plenty of terrible ideas here a lot of us completely loathe and if there were not one negative comment about those ideas it'd look to someone reading the forum as if everyone was okay with that idea. Well, I say no to horrid ideas. The line must be drawn here! This far! And no further!

Yep. No People of Walmart in my video games, I see enough of them in real life. I found some new concept art! Vashlyna, the warrior princess. She may not be one for looks but her incredible coat of fatty tissue gives her great damage resistance.

I don't see why our "modern" ideals of diversity and equality would have a place in some fantasy world, though it really depends on the world. And honestly, I'd rather meet good-looking NPCs than ugly ones, unless it enhances their character in some way (scars, gluttony, old witches, the suffering...). There's way too many hideous people in real-life already; no need to give fat and ugly hambeasts space in an RPG as well. After all, this is the one chance where you can escape the ugly reality. Detecting some kind of fat-pride in PE would kill the game outright for me- unless it's just done to make fun of them. Edit: Of course everyone being a big-breasted super model is just as outright offensive. That's obvious. Obsidian can handle this. Just look at Safiya and Sagani and Qara - bald, plain and hideous, respectively. There's 0 need to worry.

Romance and friendship?
Jasede replied to Krikkert's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I wouldn't worry, Obsidian and especially MCA aren't exactly known for their tolerance for the horrid, disgusting harem simulator that a few may be clamoring for so desperately. That doesn't mean we should show any pity to them, though. It needs to be clear that shallow, inane romances that lead only to personal gratification aren't tolerated and no resources ought to be diverted to such a shallow pursuit. Which leads me to another question: Why keep asking for romances when the stance has already been made clear multiple times? It's apparent the "let's romance the entire party so we can fade to black and play some moaning SFX" thing isn't happening. This doesn't preclude the tasteful and well-written theme of love that's so prevalent in the works of Obsidian and MCA, even though it needs to be said that that's far more than simple carnal gratifying love. Much rather, they tackle themes such as the love to one's home, to one's brother, to one's friends, to one's worlds, to one's god's, and, yes, romantic love, but always subservient to the greater narrative and coherence of the world. -
Romance and friendship?
Jasede replied to Krikkert's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'm sorry; it's just that reading this kind of thing is more than just a little infuriating. It's downright disappointing. Asking for these kind of influences in what could be a glorious renaissance of Obsidian is just depressing and the last thing I wanted to see in the morning. Here we have something that has the potential to be great and already people are trying to pull it into the mud with their fell and selfish desires. -
