He sounds awesome, but so very vague. How do you think the mind****ing will come across in the mechanics?

As long as the culture changes are taken into account and investigated, I'll be happy with any sort of governments. I want to see what would happen to everyday people living everyday lives if say they were ruled by a council of farmers that governed based on the shifting of weather patterns or something just as unusual. I do wonder how the gods will come into this as well. It was mentioned that they are both definitely there and that they might try and confuse mystical subjects. I wonder how that will affect governing patterns.

C'mon. Do you think that concept drawing for a P:E character existed without P:E input? In a matter of hours they folded like a beach chair to the avalanche of QQ about how boobplate wasnt realistic in a fantasty game where you use magic and fight monsters. Were talking about something that less than .5% of the 50k backers commented on. I'm referring to these posts by Mr. Sawyer. These posts are why I think, Mr. Sawyer at least, always had a more functional design in mind. If you disagree, that's fine. The possibility is certainly there. But I would rather end the derail and let people get back to discussing possible magic systems.- 661 replies

Of course it matters, they are listening. However, the only thing demands and threats are going to achieve is the restriction of the free flow of information. I don't want Obsidian thinking they have be careful what they tell us lest we revolt. I want to know what's going on, when it's going on. Allowing demands to represent the whole community means less information, in my mind, which means I (and others) have to yell just as loud as the opposing viewpoint.- 661 replies

I'd say they owe us information. Let them make the game however they want. It is their game. But it is also our money. So we desrve to be informed when possible. I don't expect info right away, but it should come. I'm actually okay with mentality. I want information pretty bad right now too. I just don't want the process rushed along to fill that need. So along as you're willing to wait for it, yes, I think the free flow of information is very important. I however do believe that you run into a couple of issue with the word 'owe' and the thought process that tends to follow it needs to be weeded out quite swiftly. It was you that pointed it out to me originally, Merin, wasn't it? Thanks for that, by the way.- 661 replies

You are staring at my backbone right now. How are you not seeing that? I want suggestions listened to because I think that might lead developers to better their ideas. I *do not* want developers swayed by whims of the community. There are too many of us and, quite frankly, not a lot of us have experience making games. Everything Mr. Sawyer has said gives me hope that this will be a single united project and not another Duke Nukem Forever that has to change weekly based on the whims of its supporters.- 661 replies

Except for boobplate? Do you not remember that thread. Mr. Sawyer posts in that discussion were on importance of functional armor and the unlikeliness of a 'boob plate'. There was no 'I guess you guys are right, let me fix it' that was all him telling us about his vision and how it matched the redraw.- 661 replies

This is a Kickstarter, man. They owe us everything. And that's the mentality that I came in here with. In fact, I went a set further and was hoping this means of funding could replace publishers so that games gamers want could get made all the time. Someone corrected me then and so I'm trying to pass that along and correct you now. When the kickstarter is over, which believe me will be long before there's a real game to talk about, that money belongs to Obsidian and they can do whatever they want with it. They have no contract with us. They don't need to ever give us another update. We are funding a project due to faith in company, not for returns. We cannot pull funding after the fact. I repeat, they *owe* us nothing.- 661 replies

I already have. I am loving Mr. Sawyer more each time he posts on this subject. The man just refuses to be pushed around and it is simply amazing. Bravo again, sir. Oh, stop the brown nosing. You're paying this man money for a product. He owes you, not vice versa. We need more details. I'm not brown nosing, I'm making sure noone misses the reality check here. They owe us nothing. I want more information too, but Mr. Sawyer has resounding stated that he will not allow the fears of funders to alter the vision he and Obsidian has for the game. That gives me more hope for this project than anything else. He's listening, he has read this thread, but at the end of the day the developers are going to decide how the game runs, not us.- 661 replies

Perhaps because they didn't expect psychotic outbursts or threats of revoking the pledges unless this feature gets changed. Why would you think revoking the pledge is psychotic? It's his money - if he thinks it's not the game he thoght it will be, then he's free to revoke it. Hell, I'll probably reduce my pledge too (still undecided). Without resting it's just not the same atmosphere. I dont' care if it's anacian or fatigue, but no resting? Part of the charm is simply gone. I get what you are saying and would agree if there was an official statement detailing the combat system. There wasn't. So at the first hint of something he might disagree with, he is throwing his hands in the air and threatening to pull his funding. I wasn't struck by the idea, just the suddenness. And he wasn't the only one. It makes us seem like crybabies and is going to put Obsidian on the defensive i.e. withholding information. I would like to avoid that please.- 661 replies

I'm also not here fighting some battle against sexism. All I want to do is avoid ridiculousness. I don't want my serious female fighter to have various vitals exposed or armor that wouldn't work properly in the name of sex appeal. I also don't want the baseline cup size to hover around DDs. That's all I'm looking for. And I think this battle was fought and won with the Cadegund art change.

I really don't know how people are reading these quotes and coming to the conclusion that we are getting the DA:O combat system. I'm telling you, it's all about the keywords. People hear any hint of 'cooldowns' and every system that was ever described that way is now how this game is going to work. I understand where they are coming from. I read the entire 400 post thread that gave birth to this one without realizing where that idea was coming from.- 661 replies

I'm pretty sure they haven't cleared anything up because there is nothing to clear it up with yet. I don't think there is a working model decided on for the P:E combat system. That seem to me to be a clear statement that the system is still being fleshed out.- 661 replies

reading all of the quotes on the front page, it really sounds like the cooldowns are more likely replacing the rest system while you will still have to make choices about what spells you have available to cast. It seems to me that Obsidian as a whole is still discussing how combat is going to work. It also seems like the bulk of the discussion is on how to solve the rest issue that doomed Vancian in RTwP games. I think you're right, ogrezilla. I really think Obsidian is having a very similar discussion as what is going on in this thread and the ones it came from. So everyone should calm a bit and hope we'll get an explanation on what basic combat system they've chosen before the end of the kickstarter. I would also remind people to avoid the curse of keywords. When designing something new, the language isn't always there to easily explain it. Vancian can be described as a cooldown system and likely would be if it wasn't so fleshed out itself. So even if they are working with a cooldown system it may be a lot closer to the Vancian than to previous examples of cooldowns.- 661 replies

Is that P:E concept art - or just stolen from something else? Actually this argument is even dumber than I first thought - it's not like we'll be able to see any detail on the character models so it's really only the character portraits that we'll be seeing. I have to admit I don't have great information on the specific piece of art, but the article I linked does seem to claim it is actual P:E concept art.

Hate to muck up the first post, but has Obsidian declared themselves on the side of cooldowns as we've all come to know them yet? It seems like a good idea to at least port over the Sawyer posts to the new thread.- 661 replies

I agree! I just spent a couple of minutes looking for my last post as some sort of landmark... and failed. I think it's time to abandon ship and close this horrible, horrible mess.

Races: What to expect
Wirdjos replied to NOK222's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I feel like dwarves and elves are so common in general fantasy that it makes as much sense to include them as it does humans. As long as you don't overplay differences between the big three (humans, elves, and dwarves), I think you need to actually make the case for them not to be included. So while I'm interested to see how the game plays with previous tropes of the big three, I'm much more interested in the two races that are so undeveloped and original that they can't even be explained to us yet.
