Combat Stances and Styles
TrashMan replied to Crusty's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Hmm...perosnally I think your character should automaticly assume different stances (and by that I mean use different combat animations) based on his skill level and the opponent. He might go from a high guard stance to a half-swording stance whne facing an opponent in heavy armor. Battle endsu p looking more realistic and active, without the player constnatly clikcing to change stances. -
Thoughts on the "resting" mechanic.
TrashMan replied to Telefax's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
By simply resting a bit you can catch your breath but that isn't enough to fully remove your fatigue. Go ahead and try. Don't sleep, just take 30 minutes pauses between bouts of owrk and see how far you can go. You NEED sleep. But you can't sleep all the time either. However, you don't have to necessarily sleep for 8 hours. If you're in a hurry you can sleep for 4 hours, and recover some fatigue. This is basicly the fatigue system I've been advocating. Breath can be easily recovered, (max) fatigue requires sleep. The simplest way to balance it is to allow reasting only when the entire party enters a fatigues state OR/AND when sufficient time has passed from the last time you rested. -
So wait - casting 100 spells before becoming too tired is not enough for you? Fatigue makes sense and isn't tedious. And b.t.w. - I invite you go walkign for half a day with full battle gear AND to fight in that battlegear. Then go ahead and tell me you ain't tired. I DARE you. If I can't make the bathroom button comment, you can't keep making these "real world" argument. Fair? This is a role-playing game, not a camping simulator. Nope. The reason you can't maek the bathroom comment is because it makes no sense and is a false somment. I could use your own (flawed) logic to denounce pretty much every single realistic thing in the game. Ya know..because it's not a simulator...so why have any limits at all? What does a bathroom break add? Absolutely nothing. There is nothing to manage, there is no tactical impact, there is NOTHING to think about. It's an action that takes a minute and can easily fall under "camping". Rest on the other hand does have a strategic/tactical impact. It does open new possibiltes and avenues.

Godslayers?
TrashMan replied to Badmojo's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Meh..personally, I'm not a fan of gods being such pushovers that they can be killed by a bunch of mortals. OR that mortals can ascend to godhood. -

Generic fantasy setting?
TrashMan replied to Metabot's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
HAHAHAHAHA EDIT: Seriously? But why? Even if you are not a fan of decontruction, the story is much better in MotB. Everyone is entilted to their own oppinion. The story just didn't grab me. Dunno. Didn't really care much about the betrayers or the Mask... or for that matter the companions. I can only remeber the one with the wings (Dove?) and the baldy - which had one of the worst romances ever. It just came out of nowhere and suddenly there was *BAM* "my darling, I love you!" .. Wut? Whoa wait. Lady, I exchanged two words with you! Mabye it was because MoTB was more deepressing than NWN2 OC? As I said, I can't pin it down. All I know is that I haven't enjoyed it as much as NWN2OC. But seriously.... drop the subject. -
* SNIP * You obviously do not know what ARMA is... As this clip shows, there are plenty of historical sources, and practice and experience with real equipment and historicly accurate replaces can give oyu a LOT of information http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6BBq9zE2pY&feature=related In a real combat the combatants would pull away, but this IS a coreographed fight.

I frankly don't think that deconstructing everything is all that hot either. People praise MoTB, but I liked the NWN2 OC far better. -
Generic fantasy setting?
TrashMan replied to Metabot's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Exactly. You think "elf" and you think "lives in forests, loves nature". If you hear "elf", and you are presented with something that doesn't match your preconceived idea of what an elf is, you can already declare that you have absolutely no interest in it because it deviates from what you were expecting. You subscribe to the platonic idea of the elf, and therefore if the name is attached to something that doesn't reflect the platonic idea of the elf, it is wrong. That's a common trend. It is exactly why BSN gets so many furious debates about what, exactly, the shape of an elf's ear should be. It is therefore reasonable that if a franchise was going to present you with something that doesn't fit your preconceived idea of an elf, if it doesn't want to alienate you it should not use that label. Then you might be able to judge what you saw on its merits, rather than being disappointed that it wasn't what an elf is supposed to be. BSN isn't really a good example, since half of them there are crazy. What you are basicly triyng to say is "words have meaning and impact". That isn't a groundbreaking discovery. It's not enough just to change the name tough. -

Frankly I have 0 interest in desert-dwelling agnostic elves. Doesn't appeal to me at all. -
Generic fantasy setting?
TrashMan replied to Metabot's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I don't think it's the name that matters. Technicly you can make a race that's exactly like evels but looks different and has a different name. People would stil labsicly call them elf-wannabes. -

Quanri? Big humans with horns. Meh. How very "original". Peoepl didnt' complain abotu them because there was nothing really about them...and because they were too busy complaing about elves. -

I havn't been talking about Drow or Dwarves, now have I? Nor have I been saying "do it like this in the game". I'm telling you how it is in real life. It's not only the simple case of "training harder" though. You need to have the build (ie. genes) to be a world-class athlete. A heavily build man for example won't become the next 100m world champion no matter how hard he trains. Or a short guy with short legs won't be much of a high jumper. You really cannot say that just because you are a man, you'd be a better athlete than ANY woman on the planet. ... That is not what I am saying. I was giving an example ( and I happen to have great genes, thank you very much. .. I have friends into sports and body-building who wish they had my body build. They also say it's wasted on me, which is true... ) If you want another example - Serena Williams (best female tennis player) had a match with a random guy (I think he was 200th or something). He wiped the floor with her. Ther's other examples - footbal and basketballs male and female teams have had matches. It ended bad with female teams, every time. *** But you know what?.. It was a mistake to get involved in this thread anyway. It's always the same thing. -

I don't think the palyeds to know everything. Who ever does in life? It might lead to one or two "how as I supposed to know?" situations, but so what?

The (un)usefullness of mages
TrashMan replied to TrashMan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Just like high-level D&D mages.... * ZING * http://en.wikipedia....a_(Middle-earth) Gandalf was one of the maiar, creatures which one could call godlike creatures or demigods. I know all about LOTR. Read everytihng Tolkien wrote. Thou art missing the point. -

If you use an original race, people will complain that there are no elves. EVERY approach has those that will cry foul. And just because you create a "new" race, doesn't mean people won't critique the s*** out of it, -

TrashMan replied to DeDaL's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
There won't be a few men stronger - there will be thousands of men stronger. I'm sorry, but it's not a stereotype. You keep harping on the average, as if we're comparing the above-average woman only with (below)average men. No, she will be competing against above-averge men. That's the whole point. Just like couch potatoes aren't athletes, neither are good soldiers couch potatoes. Sure, if you bring out a women athlete, she will outperform me, because I don't practice anything (except sitting in the office for half a day). However, the physical potential is there. If I were to train as hard as she, I would outperofm her. then agian, I would be an athlete then. The differences aren't minor as some of you think. Males have a higher physical ceeling they cna reach. Both on average and in the extreemes (especially extreemes). Sports pretty much prove it. Science proves it. Some just refuse to accept it. -
Not necessarily. BG didn't have timed quests ( not that I tihnk timed quests are wrong. I'd love a few), but that character did get fatigued if you went a long time without resting. Worked great for Jagged Alliance and in that game you can have up to 18 people.
