Realism: does it matter?
TrashMan replied to Death Machine Miyagi's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)1. Yes 2. No 3. Not really 4. Maybe. you list too many things for me to agree with all of them. I say again - VERSIMILITUDE.

Proposed Inventory System
OR you pierced their armor. Armor is tough but not indestructible. But a hole in the armor doesn't make it unusable. Just in need of repair. However, it's worth to note that plate mail needs to be FITTED. Just taking a damaged armor from a fallen enemy and donning it won't bring you big defensive bonuses.

Proposed Inventory System
I find your objection silly. Mass and volume are not the same. Claiming they are because tehy are both "numbers" is like me claiming STR and DEX are the same, because they are both numbers dispalyed on the same screen. I see no reason why an inventory system would be based on just volume or just weight. That is just silly and adds nothing to the game. And if you dread taking care of a simplified inventory for 6 characters, then I have to wonder if you ever played on enjoed any IE game before...

Proposed Inventory System
No it doesn't. Volume lists your total capacity to carry things. Weather you put it on a strap or in a backpack is irrelevant. Any items you carry i automaticly assumed to be carried in the most efficient manner possible. And with proper balancing of volume, who said you can carry 2 full sets of plate mail?

Quests that are unsolvable for certain characters
I don't mind it. It feels like real life to not be able to accomplish everything and solve every problem. And to remove it for the Jounral, isnt' there almsot always a Drop Quest bottun these days? Problem solved.

Left Handed Characters

Mixing up the Good Guy/Bad Guy Dichotomy
I don't see that as a requirement. After all, some things simply are evil. Period. If you go around kicking and murdering babies and puppies, that is plain evil by pretty much anyones standards. That said, aligment systems have their pros and cons and I don't mind having no aligment system. (especially given how 90% of the people don't relaly understand the core principles behind aligment systems) I consider it a better alternative than a horribly broken or mislabaled system (looking at you BioWare). Paragon/Renegade and Friendship/Rivalry are good concepts, but just poory executed and explained. I know plenty of people who think a Rivalry path is an evil path (becasue it's red) EDIT: And I really don't want to see a Kreia-like character again. An obviously evil, ploting and condescending character that I can't get rid off, with the powers of hax. Just no. I detest Kreia. I detest that "hunger in the force" makes sith. I detest the whole "wound/hole in the force" plot. Easily the worst parts of KOTOR2.

Mixing up the Good Guy/Bad Guy Dichotomy
The PC and his/her girlfriend/boyfriend plan to marry. Then the significant other backstabs us (literally) and takes off with all of our belongings thinking us dead. The PC sets out on a quest to find his former love and bring them to justice.

RPG cliches you hope to see avoided and/or mocked
TrashMan replied to Death Machine Miyagi's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)Not even in D&D are all orcs truly evil. "But wait" - you say. It sez CHAOTIC EVIL in the monsters handbook. Yea? Well so does the entry for DROW. And we have plenty of non-evil drow running around, now don't we? Aligment is a guideline. It shows a specific leaning of a race. I long for the day when all orcs and drow weren't just misunderstood niceguys. Yeah. However, aligment really doesn't even enter into equation when someone is trying to murder you.

After replaying BG2 with "fresh eyes".
I don't think you can get to lvl 20 in stock BG2. Devs are Throne of Bhaal stuff. I also loved the Underdark and Sundelessanar.

[Merged] Armor mechanics thoughts
By that logic we should put some penalties on magical swords, because if we don't then no one would want to use normal swords... Seriously. Plate is the best armor one can have. Period. It should be the best armor in the game BY FAR. Period. However, that doesn't mean a player will ever be able to equip a whole party with it. Plate armor has to be custom-fitted and is EXPENSIVE AS HELL.

Character inspiration for hte devs?
What the title implies. What kinds of characters interest you. What characters you ran across that are awesome/badass/funny/great/whatever and you'd love if the develoeprs make something similar. So post here. What are some of your favorite characters. Give the writers ideas and inspirations. Me? I'd want to see something like King and his 2 bodyguards (Niels and Bohr) from Exiern. They are utterly awesome. Here are some of their moments: http://www.exiern.com/?p=1023 And if you're lazy to read to 5 strips that follow..the conclusion http://www.exiern.com/?p=1034 http://www.exiern.com/?p=1040 http://www.exiern.co.../?p=1667(king being himself - 4 strips) http://www.exiern.com/?p=907 king and guards - 1 strip http://www.exiern.co...rn.com/?p=968 - king beein creepy (6 strips) http://www.exiern.co....com/?p=1303- Niels being awesome http://www.exiern.com/?p=2285 - some side humor http://www.exiern.com/?p=1083 - Bhor the maginifcent http://www.exiern.com/?p=1334 - more from king and his guards (6 strips) http://www.exiern.com/?p=1373 - "evil" Niels http://www.exiern.com/?p=2270 - Niels talking

Armour & weapon designs - a plea (part II).
No, not really. Visual prefferences should not trump reason and functionality. That said, if someoen waants to run around in a loncloith, he's allowed to do so. But I don't want to see him be just as effective as a guy in full-plate. Doing so is an auto-fail in my book.

Mantaining the risk and unpredictability
If a specific player won't accpet blame, why should that be my problem? People often don't accept blame and point fingers at others, or often accept praise for things that aren't completley their doing. And luck and chance are a factor in everything. That doesn't make your contribution meaningless. The "final arbiter" is meaningless in this context.

Two handed swords
What you think is wrong. Stereotypes and preconceptions. There's a lot of people thinking that medieval knights used brute strength and samurai were masters of finesse. In realtiy that is not the case (and it probably was the other way around). **** Typicly by how good it is at cutting/stabing. A sword that produces bigger, deeper wounds can be considered to be more damaging. A rapier that misses all vital organs isn't deadly at all. A zweihander stab that misses all vital organ will cerantly produce a lot bigger wound.

Realism: does it matter?
TrashMan replied to Death Machine Miyagi's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)Realism? A more correct word would be VERSIMILITUDE. Or BELEVIABLITY. Realism is - of course - the easiest way to achive it, because realism is by definition believable... and anything that strives to be believable will have some grounding in realism. No, a serious setting doesn't have to be a 100% accurate historical replica. But it has to be internally consistent. It has to be..blievable.

Armor class
I modeed D&D once and replaced all AC bonuses of armor for damage reduction. The fighter in full plate and the nimble dextrous ranger finally felt realy different in how they approached combat. But for PE? A mix...kind of. Armor doesn't reduce your chance of being hit. But it does protect you from hits. It increases the chance the blow will be glancing (as the weapon will slide off the curved armor). Those who know how to fight properly in armor can expect a bigger bonus here. It also protects. Contrary to many movies, plate armor isn't made from aluminium and doesn't crumple as easily. I'm not a fan or artificially boosting light armor or gimping heavy ones for the sake of "balance". Frankly I think that approach is crap. If I spend a fortune for full plate by an armor smith, I expect it to be truly a lot better than a light armor (as it was in real life). After all it costs more than an entire village makes in a year (at least). Heavy armor has two negatives: - increased fatigue - reduced vision (depending on helm..the more protective the helmet, the more restrictive it is) That's it.
