Will the Backer Beta be Streamable?
Mannock replied to Pray's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
It would be nice to see some people streaming this on twitch since it's very fun to directly interact with the one playing. Anyone have twitch plans? -
Game looks great, but...

Looking at it I have to wonder whats the catch with wearing that fur-leather shirt that covers only the upper half of the torso. The catch is you're a savage beast who don't give a ****. Intimidation and all. -

PC Gamer Full Demo Video

Watching the demo I noticed something. In some other thread, someone complained about the black ooze dropping the cloak of protection as loot. In this video it was quite clear that the ooze didn't drop the cloak as loot. Rather the cloak was found in an urn in the secret chamber. -

Graphical complaints regarding a game trying to hit the feel of the IE-games? Give me a break. The graphics are more than good enough. -

I'm quite sure it has been stated that companions won't fight eachother to the point of leaving. Companions might leave based on certain decisions you make as party leader though. -
Giantbomb Quicklook on the 24th
Mannock replied to Darji's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I see it as the other way around. With no xp for kills, there is no point in killing more than you really have to, to finish the quest. If you get xp for every kill, the incentive is to kill everything you see (assuming you like to gain levels). Talk about carnage. -
IGN Article about PoE.
Mannock replied to GrayAngel's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Girl gamer? As if the gender is relevant? She's a gamer, just like anybody else is. I like the IGN video better than giantbomb. More informative. *edit* Also note this. In the video, Josh is asked how many joinable NPCs there are, he answers: "The backers backed 8 total companions." Again it's interesting how they (Josh and previously Brandon) chose their words regarding the joinable NPCs. Unless the devs come in here and clarify this, my bet is on there being more than 8 NPC companions in the game. -
I think the point with the system for PoE is that you won't need to rest after every battle. Or it won't even be possible because you will have limited supplies. Can't rest more times than the number of supplies you have, unless you travel to an inn or your stronghold. Anyway, what mod do I hope for? Well, I hope for mods that I'm not allowed to mention here.

I find this odd. Switching weapons mid combat is a tactical decision and it should, in my opinion, come with some sort of a cost. Wasn't there a recovery time for wizards switching grimoire's by the way? -

Wrong. It was the E3 footage. -
The Official Romance Thread
Mannock replied to Blarghagh's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yep. Although, sadly, they were very polite to the promancers when giving them the 'bad news'. If I was a dev, the announcement would have been far more... colorful. Like this: [image] LOL (edit: saw this one in another romance thread here and just had to steal it) Seriously? An image of child abuse as something funny? My bet is you don't have any kids of your own. Feel free to bash on romances all you want, but please don't put it in the same box as child abuse. It's disgusting. -
The Official Romance Thread
Mannock replied to Blarghagh's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I've got one. It may be one you've heard already or maybe it's not, but it's especially relevant, currently. And it is an example of why my "objection" to romances goes beyond just my specific personal taste. A couple of days ago, Bioware held a DA:I Q&A session and followed it up with the release of 15 minutes of its E3 gameplay footage. It was a major info-dump. It covered almost every aspect of the game, and the gameplay footage focused almost exclusively on Exploration and combat. And what was the result? Romance discussion from the fans. And nothing else. Here we have a highly anticipated RPG and its developers are comprehensively attempting to present its features. In vain. The fan base, apparently, is not interested in the RPG's robust Combat system. Or its exploration. Or even its plot. They only care about the 8 romances that were announced. Something isn't right, here. Dating simulators and RPGs are NOT interchangeable terms. Thankfully, it's just Bioware and its hopeless BSN fanbase. But if this becomes industry norm... where nothing matters in an RPG but its romances, that will be the day there's no longer such a thing as RPGs. Do you want this? I don't. And that is why I rejoice whenever a major RPG developer like Obsidian releases an RPG with no romances. Consider this though. In how many RPGs of today do you find any romances? Not many, right? It's not surprising that fans of romance in RPGs flock the BSN since BioWare is one of few the companies that make a big deal about romances in their games. Had romances been a fact in basically every RPG created then the people favouring such aspect of a game would be spread out on a lot of forums and you would most likely not see such a gathering as it currently is at BSN. Imagine combat wasn't a standard in todays RPGs. Of 100 RPGs created only two of the games had any combat functionality. Do you think the forums of those two games would have a huge base of people gushing over a new combat video just released? -
Npc conflicts?
Mannock replied to Namutree's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
A recent Angry Joe interview implies there may be more than 8 companions. If so, npc conflicts become more viable. You can draw that assumption, yes, but we don't have any confirmation yet. It's just speculation. -
It is as if you don't want to understand my point. Sure, we can have opinions on how much or little information we backers have gotten so far but that is besides the point. Obsidian travel to E3, not for us backers but for those gamers who are not really aware of the existance of this game (or know quite little about it). From that perspective, I don't think char creation is the main selling point to focus on. Apparently Obsidian is having the same point of view and I don't think it's that big of a deal from an E3-perspective. If we were discussing the backer updates however, things would be different. I also think it's a shame that you are quite rude in the way you respond. Maybe I didn't use the word 'logic' correctly, but you understood what I was trying to say. No point in being mean about it. Or do you want me to appologize to you for not having the same skill in the English language as you have?
-
Well we know there's gonna be char creation, so with you logic above, why should they show char creation? Can they only show stuff we don't know about? They are showing basic combat and questing for journalists. What's so odd about it? I don't understand what your gripe is, besides that you didn't get to see what you wished for. I think char creation is a very important aspect for you and me, but the target audience at E3 (going via the journalists), aren't players like you and me who already know a lot about the game and are veteran CRPG gamers. I think even the mighty Gromnir can appreciate that fact.
-
Well, I'd say the story and the interaction with the NPCs are the most important parts of the game. But that's just my point of view, and you have yours. that question were asked, but we only saw once. developers noted that they didn't wanna spoil. so, while we thinks it is passing silly to show wolf killing as a way to highlight your new game, your query were addressed and given response. and apply simple reason, it makes sense that if you don't wanna spoil, you don't show interactions that is gonna be important in the game. show interaction with mayor pufnstuf or wilhelmina witchiepoo? given limited resources, we didn't expect a dedicated e3 demo that could show off Real combat and Interesting interactions. you got the equivalent o' rats in the basement. huzzah. and no single interaction is gonna be more signification than character creation. the only possible such interaction that might challenge character creation for significance would be the end-game interaction. you folks has played crpgs, yes? we expect some o' the journalists must have. HA! Good Fun! Combat is combat. If you want to show the basics you can do it against wolves just as well as against demons (or whatever). And it wasn't just the combat, they showed the scripted text interactions too, they showed how quests could be completed in several different ways, the way you could give your char a background (through interaction with a NPC), etc. I'm not saying showing off the char creation would be a dreadful mistake, however I understand why they didn't and chose to focus on other things instead.
-
Well, I'd say the story and the interaction with the NPCs are the most important parts of the game. But that's just my point of view, and you have yours. Given the fact that Obsidian didn't show off the char creation at E3, my bet is they don't consider char creation the single most important part either (however, this doesn't mean char creation is unimportant of course).
-
It was your wishful thinking that included romances in the game when you read about it on kickstarter, the actual pitch didn't. You simply just have to deal with that.

Because that's not what Obsidian wanted to show at E3? I assume they have limited time to show their stuff off to as many journalists as possible. I think they had 30 mins per session and I'm not sure spending 5 mins of that time showing off the char creation parts time well spent. They obviously wanted to show off the gameplay as in combat and in game choices that matters. That was their selling point and things that they thought might get positive reactions and attention. I agree with you that char creation is a fun and integral part of a RPG but going to E3 with the char creation as their main focus wouldn't have been a good idea from a PR standpoint.
