  1. I'd suggest it is incumbent on the poster to communicate their intent in the first place.
  2. One of the lessons(?) of colonialism is that it is more cost-effective to exploit another country through trade than through conquest. The latter requires expensive military occupation, whereas the former only requires transportation. But Russia lacks good sea ports so they never had a naval colonial phase, and thus view matters from a different perspective.
  3. Sarcasm in general is sometimes difficult to detect in text form. It can be useful to keep that in mind.
  4. It would depend on the circumstances. Ukraine is fighting on the defensive and is well-motivated.
  5. I just finished watching one of those historical colorized film versions of World War II history; in particular, the Barbarossa operation and German treatment of civilians in Russia and the Ukraine. The parallels are spooky. I suppose it's true; war never changes.
  6. Webb Space Telescope Completes First Multi-Instrument Alignment
  7. One always has to be a little careful of the tendency of a nation to vilify an enemy state for the purposes of wartime propaganda, but on the whole the reports have been very chilling and increasingly beyond the point of denial. Russia is heading toward a very dark place.
  8. I haven't read one Saxon book, so I think I'm good. But thanks for your concern.

  10. Iran vs. US? Hmm. Well we'll see how good Qatar is at event security then. If it was at a more neutral site it would be a fun matchup. As it is, Qatar has rumored links with Islamist extremists.
  11. I'm giving Wasteland 3 a go now to see if I enjoy it, having waited for patching to reach a fairly stable state.
  12. It's fairly typical for a nation's populace to support a war effort at the start, regardless of the moral validity. It doesn't always end up that way.
  13. Mmm, yes well China didn't qualify, so size and wealth don't always matter. Anyway, less wealthy nations often do well in sports as it's a road out of poverty for some players.
  14. That's probably true of most regions not in Europe or South America. We all know which region's teams will be playing in the final few games. At least for now.
  15. What is little known about that is the US intel on the Iraqi WoMD in 2003 was uncertain and they rated themselves as such. What gets pushed is the political spin brought on by the Bush administration, including Rumsfeld and Cheney. They saw what they wanted to see, and sold the world on that viewpoint. Little evidence for Iraq WMDs ahead of 2003 war: U.S. declassified report Personally I never viewed the action as about WMDs; it was always about oil and terrorism.
  16. The USMNT have (barely) made it back to the World Cup. They're still sloppy as all get up.
  17. Bruce Willis Stepping Away From Acting Following Aphasia Diagnosis Damn, that's a shame.
  18. Ha! It's open season on seizure of Russian assets. Game on.
