  1. Maybe it's a software fix for the "uncanny valley" problem? I.e. by the designers.
  2. Math humor.
  3. It's very cool that they are finally able to assemble direct graphical evidence of an SMBH now. Perhaps the next step will be to produce animated images so we can actually see the accretion disk in operation? At any rate, another huge accomplishment for science.
  4. It's always a challenge to know what's true in that corner of the world. There's just too much incentive to lie and make Israeli look monstrous. I'm withholding judgment for that reason; not that I'm not concerned. It's also a dangerous line of work for journalists to travel to conflict zones. The US has also lost journalists in that region.
  5. Finland abandons neutrality and will move to immediately join NATO Prior to this war I never expected to see that. Putin can't be happy.
  6. In the angular sense they are about the same size.
  7. Diversion to try and draw away Ukranian reserves from the east. That was my thought anyway.
  8. The article doesn't mention it, but this object is called Sagittarius A*, or Sgr A*. I'll be curious to see how similar it looks to the SMBH in M87, since I suspect the accretion disk in Sgr A* may orbit close to the galactic plane.
  9. Rumor has it this is going to be an image of Sgr A* by the Event Horizon Telescope.
  10. Comparing the Incredible Webb Space Telescope Images to Other Infrared Observatories Sweet!
  11. The problem there is the Russian naval presence, which could allow them to land anywhere along the coast and bypass the bottleneck. Against a blitz-style attack, a defense in depth is more appropriate. The Ukrainians couldn't guard every inch of their border, so they needed to prioritize. Clearly, defending Kyiv was critical at the start of the conflict, whereas they could afford to give up ground in the southeast.
  12. A key benefit of that separation for the church is limits on the federal government's ability to tax them.
  13. Reading The Zoologist's Guide to the Galaxy: What Animals on Earth reveal about aliens--and ourselves by Arik Kershenbaum.
  14. These days I only drink hard seltzers for minimal carbs and sugar.
