People being what they are, I'm a bit skeptical about promises of utopia. Even the wealthy (who have everything they could possibly need) still commit crimes; they just have better lawyers. Do we get free high end lawyers as well?
Sounds like an argument for execution then. My issue with that is the cases where people have been unjustly convicted of violent crimes they did not commit. E.g. Thomas James. Perhaps though some day we'll be able to reprogram criminals with a neural interface?
I take the view that eighty years spent rotting away in a high security prison is a worse punishment than execution. It's a disincentive for those who would follow. Plus scientists can perform experiments on his brain.
The first Monday-night game has the Wilson-led Broncos taking on the Seahawks in Seattle. *sigh* I guess the league HQ likes its mini-dramas. They're a lot like Pro Wrestling that way.
It's very cool that they are finally able to assemble direct graphical evidence of an SMBH now. Perhaps the next step will be to produce animated images so we can actually see the accretion disk in operation? At any rate, another huge accomplishment for science.
It's always a challenge to know what's true in that corner of the world. There's just too much incentive to lie and make Israeli look monstrous. I'm withholding judgment for that reason; not that I'm not concerned. It's also a dangerous line of work for journalists to travel to conflict zones. The US has also lost journalists in that region.
The article doesn't mention it, but this object is called Sagittarius A*, or Sgr A*. I'll be curious to see how similar it looks to the SMBH in M87, since I suspect the accretion disk in Sgr A* may orbit close to the galactic plane.
