What will game cost on release?
Bryy replied to kranecu's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
How does that negate the fact that making a profit is not bad? -
The Corsair Hydro Series is amazing. Just make sure your tubes are not bent. I recently untwisted one of my cooling tubes, and it gave me an extra twenty degrees temperature difference.

I wasn't going to bring this up, but the fact that, when I went to Obsidian, people were thanking me for giving them the ability to keep their jobs (which, by the way, is something I will never forget), it kind of proves that this is not a matter of "oh, they already have $4m in sales". -

My point is that things get said all the time out of context of what they have evolved to mean in a different context, -
Everyone seems to be getting ridiculously low frame rates today.

Exactly. I'm getting rather tired of people going "but the law says this". It's the same thing as people going "but the dictionary says this" when using stupid phrases like cancer and rape to describe things that are nowhere near context. -
So, screw the final boss. Most poorly designed boos fight ever.

A horrific truth of Kickstarter is that each of your backers that pledged to a reward tier equals a sales loss. There's a bunch of problems with a statement that absolute. 1. A kickstarter pledge is a sale. What? No. -
So now I have this game. People keep dying.

A horrific truth of Kickstarter is that each of your backers that pledged to a reward tier equals a sales loss. Double Fine, it appears, is in the middle of that reality. And yet. People comment with "we don't care if you don't make any money". -
Do you want Alpha Protocol 2?
Bryy replied to Marburg's Postman's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
That's... ridiculously offensive. -
One of the things I hated writing for my project was every possible conversation you could have with any possible party combination at any given moment. Thank God I was only working with a total of seven characters.

Not to mention, you have to design an actual working body system. You can't just say "this looks cool". It has to work.

That's a very, very good point. Writing for video games is unlike any other form of writing, let alone any form of creative process. It's possibly the only writing job where the words are not yours. They belong to every department, and have to match up with what they are doing. You are limited by not only time, but also by budget. Each word has a real world dollar value attached to it. Let's get away from the nebulous team effort of writing for a game and just for a minute talk about HOW to write for a game. It's not linear. It's not neat. Usually there are multiple files separating dialogue, action, and description. These are all strewn together like one giant Choose Your Own Adventure. And when writing character dialogue, you need to also write a description about how to say the line. If you do it poorly, you end up costing the group a whole lot more work than they could have had.

Perhaps I'm being cynical but changing physical rewards to digital means less expense for their publishing "partners" even though backers (a.k.a. "old-school box collectors") like myself spent hundreds of dollars, above and beyond, for those physical pieces... I HATE digital downloads/ rewards/ etc. It stinks of being cheap and really not having the person own it. Yes, the core game matters most but I, and others I'm sure, put in a lot more than most would pay for any game with the promise of certain extras. Just disappointed but we'll see what else changes before release... Oh please. It had to be the Evil Publisher. Dear Lord.

Baldur's Gate 3?
Bryy replied to projectx's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
This is friggin' amazing. But would absolutely blow with D&D's ruleset. Correction: people like good games. Using this logic, not trying to be completely asinine, but Doublefine would be making millions on Broken Age. -

Actually, it would seem one common secondary motivation for early settlers of the New World was getting native girls in the sack (the primary motivation would have been wealth). I have no doubt crusaders wouldn't have missed a chance with those exotic Arab women. What do you think went on when a city was sacked? And that's hardly the only way they could have gotten it. Getting laid is one of the oldest, strongest, most basic drives of the human race. It kind of has to, for it to has gotten this far. If you look at human history, you will see it pretty much anywhere, especially when it comes to adventurers Way to romanticize rape.

Backer Beta: Coming August 18th
Bryy replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
When I came into this thread, I was hoping it would be on my birthday. I was not expecting it to. I was still expecting to write a "a birthday present" post, though. I was not expecting it to be on my birthday. But now I'm just so happy. -
I've been on this forum for ten years, and a fair few on BIS before that and I haven't seen such a consensus around a CRPG since BG2 to be honest. Seriously, right? I'm on Act 3 and am amazed that the quality just keeps up. Oh, and we should have a Obsidiboard Co-Op Night.

Wow, now I seen everything. I've seen "BioWare was never good" posts, and I've seen "EA magically corrupted them like poison" posts. But now I've seen "there were evil devs in the company held in line by the good devs". The Good Doctors always - let me repeat: always - wanted to be rockstars, and Rockstar. They have said in countless interviews that everything wrong with DA2 was their fault. This was after they left the company (which most likely had nothing to do with EA's management and everything to do with them just wanting out). Look. I've talked to DA2 devs. I know the bull**** that went on. Not all of it, of course, but enough to get a good picture. So it's not like I'm color coating it because I want my genitals inside EA's female workers or something (yes, someone actually accused me of this). But there is no such thing as Good vs. Evil.
