This is probably the most reasonable post in all the thread. -
Update 91: Closing in on March 26th!
Jesugandalf replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Pufff, though I wouldn't be this excited, but I am. It has been a long, long road. But it's coming to an end. March 26th is approaching! -
Favourite games, both BGs, PST and others like Arcanum or older classics like Lands of Lore, Shadowlands, Eye of the Beholders or some Ultima games. I would like the game to resemble BGs and PS:T alike. A mixing of the virtues of those three games would be the best game ever created. Very difficult to do, though.

descriptive text VS spoken text
Jesugandalf replied to amalgam's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Definitely. A nightmare for translators, better for the rest of us :D -
I think they talked about a translation of the game, and the term 'translation' seems to me it's only referred to the texts and not voice acting.

I'm telling you why this concept would not work most of the times: imagine two cultures, one brilliant, advanced, full of thinkers and warriors unmatched, while the other one of those cultures is less advanced, has less or low morality and is more reprobable in all the ways. Or, say, you've got elves and orcs. Which variety would you use for each civilization, Spanish from Spain or Spanish from, say, Chile? I don't think it would be such a heavy issue. Dwarves with Scottish accents, or Barbarians with Eastern European accents (like Minsc from BG II) don't seem to be much of an offense to anyone. Believe me, I'm a translator myself and I know what I say. There have been lots of cases in which certain varieties of a language have been used to remark lowly origins of some people, or lowly professions, and they have been quite controversial among the people affected. Nobody likes his culture being associated with low or bad-mannered people.

The fact about different varieties of Spanish happen with all the major languages when they are spoken in different parts of the world. In Spain, the Spanish we use differ in many ways with the Spanish used in Argentina, but both varieties are perfectly understandable among them. I can give word for that, I am the admin of a forum with both Spanish and Latin American users, and there never happened a case in which communication was impossible, or the meaning of a sentence was severely misunderstood. Of course we use different varieties of the language, but if any text should be translated into the different varieties of a given language, any translator should take into acount dialects, or even sociolects (different varieties of the language spoken by different social classes). That would of course be a nightmare, and unfeasible by the way. And the same happens with English, or French. The ultimate goal when translating a game is to make it understandable to people speaking that language. If the translation is made into traditional Spanish (Spain's Spanish) it is understandable for Latin American Spanish speakers. If it's made the other way round, happens the same. I'm pretty happy the game is translated into Spanish. I can understand and speak or write English, even translate into Spanish (I've a university degree in Translation) but many people I know can't, and I'm happy for them, because they will be able to play the game. And many of those people are Latin American users in our community, of course.

Being mentioned somewhere in the game would be nice, in a book present in many houses, for example. Being depicted as a group of drunken fools in a tavern would be superb to me.

Make a wish for 3.6
Jesugandalf replied to hideo kuze's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
It's impossible to translate to each language. I'm not a native speaker and I prefer english. I know it's impossible to translate the game to each language, but Italian is a language spoken by more than 50 million people, it's not any language. Moreover, translating a game is an investment, it's not money spent in smoke and vapour. If you aren't a native English-speaker, you should sympathise with people who want the game translated into their own languages. I do, too, and I'm perfectly capable of playing and understanding it in English. It's a question of unselfishness, the way I see it. -
Make a wish for 3.6
Jesugandalf replied to hideo kuze's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I think it's going to be very difficult to reach 3,5million. I'd like to be mistaken, but seems too much money to me. If we reach it, I'd be perfectly happy with the game as it would be. Lots and lots of gameplay hours, enough different races and classes and, although eight may seem a quite small number of companions, don't forget you can create your own or customize the ones you get in the Adventurer's Hall. And don't forget an expansion is on the way, and it could add new races and/or classes. I think the game is quite big and complex as it is, and it will be much bigger if we get the second big city, I don't think we need more races or classes. What I would like is a translation into Italian or Portuguese. Being a native Spanish speaker as I am, I completely sympathise with them. -
After completion kickstarter
Jesugandalf replied to Forber's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
A 10-level dungeon, if the levels are deep and complex enough (I don't see why they shouldn't be) is a very, very good dungeon in terms of hours of gameplay. For example, consider Legend of Grimrock. It's a whole game taking place in a dungeon that has "twelve and a half" levels, and it has around 10-15 hours of gameplay. If we have a deep 10-level Endless Paths, it would surely add at least 10 gameplay hours, and that would be just part of the game. In fact, I think that a too big Endless Paths dungeon of, say, 14 or 15 levels, could be, to many players, too deep, too challenging and/or too long to get to the bottom. And that is not the spirit of the dungeon I guess. -
Please no! Don't make a console version! In any or other way, all the games with a console version have ended being more "console-ish" than "pc-ish". If Obsidian is building something true to the Infinity Engine Games' spirit, it definitely have to be a PC only game. Tradition is tradition. And it must be respected.

Multi-Classing
Jesugandalf replied to ArchBeast's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Multiclassing? Yes. Overpowered multiclassing? Definitely no! Under-powered multiclassing? Definitely no! In my opinion, multiclassing only works well when it is as perfectly balanced as possible. And I don't agree with the fact that multiclassing in BG was overpowered, to me there were certain combinations which had even more drawbacks than advantages. -
On the Subject of Stats
Jesugandalf replied to anubite's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I agree with anubite, all stats should be important in any way to any type of character. It's logical that the most important stat for a mage is intelligence to remember spells and the most important skill for a rogue is dexterity to hide in shadows, pickpocket and open locks, but maybe a dexterous wizard could cast spells quicker and an intelligent rogue would be more successful when trying to hide in shadows or pickpocket. I like the idea of having primary and secondary stats for each class, in a way that primary stats affect much more to the character's abilities than secondary, although the latter would perhaps be the difference in a given situation. -
Great poll! I definitely like the idea of having kinda pet companions who I can dress and undress to my liking, sell their property and put into practice the saying "my things are mine and yours are mine, too", but playing with companions with personalities who could go if they don't like me, have their own property (which they could give to me if they want) and money is something very interesting, too. It would make party cohesion even more important. It would make having a party in good spirits a more important objective than in previous RPG games. It would be, I think, more challenging than mere pet companions. Anyway, I want full control of the whole group, nevertheless.

Yeah, riddles, with Gollum and Bilbo trying to beat each other and the player taking part for one of them :D

Underground Big City
Jesugandalf replied to slopesandsam's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
It could still be an underground city, although definitely not at the end of The Endless Paths. That would be crazy, I think big cities should be easily reachable for all players. After all, big cities are so because, among other things, they are accessible -
Which tier did you choose?
Jesugandalf replied to Althernai's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
$250 reward tier + $30 shipping to Spain + $8 Order. I think it's the most price-reward interesant tier, the $500 is too much for me looking at the extra stuff you get. Not that $250 is a small amount for a game, I've never paid so much for one before... though I'll get PE plus Wasteland 2 plus PE expansion, so... Anyway, $250 was also the highest amount I can afford without being killed and buried in the basement by my fiancée :D
