Accuracy no longer comes from stats directly. You still have accuracy scores based on class, talents that increase accuracy (like weapon focus), items that can buff your accuracy, and spells/abilities that can increase it as well. So it is still there, it just isn't as easy to buff it to insane levels anymore.

Oh don't worry I was merely throwing it out there. I don't mean Constantine specifically but there are a lot of die hards on this forum that thought any deviation, and I do mean ANY, from Baldur's Gate 2 or Icewind Dale 2 was basically committing a cardinal sin and they try to portray Eternity as if it is some kind of MMO or something or has simple mechanics. I played D&D for years and I can tell you straight up the mechanics of Eternity are not what I would call simple, if anything they are more complicated. If you want the closest approximation Eternity is basically D&D 4th edition with more complex math tagged on.

Why ask why? Bud Dry. Seriously it is a gaming nostalgia thing for them. No 20 inch CRT from 10-15 years ago has as good a monitor as what can be purchased today. They just don't want to (gasp!) use a widescreen mod or stretch the image to fit. I guess the black bars you mention are also somehow offensive .

If you find anyone on this forum honestly claiming this game is being catered to the mass market and being designed for broad appeal I want you to tell me who it is. Cause whatever they are smoking must be some real good stuff. Suffice it to say this game has stuck to it's original design goals just fine and it is about as far as you can get from a "mass market" game.

Character Names
Karkarov replied to BlueLion's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I just ran the video game name generator and got: NFL GameDay 2000 Series Baseball 2K12. I laughed for a good three minutes, I give this word generator thing the Karky Stamp of Approval! -
We've known that since 2013 actually. Really? Have you been prescient since 2013? Sensuki is quite right. There have UI threads out the yin yang on these forums over the years and he and I have butted heads in them many times. It is possible we are the two most vocal about various UI stuff on this forum in fact. But some time ago Sawyer basically laid down the law and made certain things crystal clear about their design goals with the UI and what they would and would not do with it. One of the things he was very adamant on was a bottom bar UI and that there would be no L shape UI or sidebar UI.

Betabackers: Are racial bonuses important?
Karkarov replied to Kid Presentable's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
It never ceases to amaze me you guys still reply. He hates the game, he wanted BG3 not Eternity, he was never going to get that, and now he only comes to the forums to flame and trash Obsidian. There is nothing worth reading or responding to there. Keep the RPG Codex on the RPG Codex. -
The Matt Sheets Q(&)A thread
Karkarov replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Well let's start her off then. So Mirror Matt on the wall... how many companions are actually tied to the crit path or is it none of them other than the previously confirmed Eder? No need for names or any specifics, just a pure curiosity question. -
New preview vid
Karkarov replied to Rhaeg's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Eh it is an okay vid but they are just playing the backer beta. Been there done that. Isn't bad for those who want a quick overview of the closest final gameplay we have access to at the moment. -
Male or Female
Karkarov replied to constantine's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I am a male, therefore I usually play male characters. Unless I am playing a game where I am an elf and it is one of those games where the elf guys look like girls too cause if I am going to have to look like a chick regardless I am going to go ahead and make my character one . -
Obsidian isn't making a sidebar UI. Modders are going to have to suck it up on that one.
-
What they want is a solid frame for each of the three UI components that simply matches up on each side to any of the other three blocks. So you could have menu on the left, or right, or middle, and it would still match and look good on both left and right sides regardless of which piece you put there.

This isn't really a complaint or a gripe but you know I have thought about some stuff lately and it occurs to me... where is the word on our Physical Goods? The game itself will release in less than two months. Will physical copies be shipped for release? What about all the books, CD's, playing cards, maps, and other collectibles? We haven't heard one word about any of it. This concerns me slightly because I have backed a number of kickstarter projects. I backed the Reading Rainbow thing... already got those physical goods. Heck today I got a messenger tube in the mail and sure enough it was a photo quality glossy movie poster and mouse pad from where I backed Skyshine Games Kickstarter Bedlam. That thing was only put on kickstarter like 4-5 months ago? Why has my Eternity Mouse pad taken over 2 years? Just sayin, give us some info on this stuff Obsidian.

Like others said it doesn't make sense for Ciphers to learn new abilities. They aren't using "spells" they are manipulating their souls power to cause an effect. It is something you have to practice, have a gift for, and probably learn from within. Wizards on the other hand just learn spells out of books, all they have to do is run down a new grimoire and study for a bit. The trade off is the Wizard is limited by what he can learn from his Grimoire while the Cipher will always have his powers and because they are based purely on his "soul energy" they can be used more often and never really run out. Chanters I could see learning new abilites by say discovering ancient poems or something in some ruin, or learning words of power from some old wise woman hanging out at some remote mountain shrine. But Obsidian could justify by saying this chants take time to learn and master and years of practice so the ones you do know represent your training and you don't have time to simply drop off the face of Eora to take 2 years to learn a new one.

Computers ghz
Karkarov replied to CyberLegend132's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
You should check the Witcher 3 requirements :D And his i5 is like mine i5 750 model and 5 years old. Modern i5 are 3.2 ghz at least. It still doesn't matter. Trust me, an i5 (even an old one) is plenty for gaming. Your graphics card does 80% of the work. Also requirements getting posted these days are mostly BS. Shadows of Mordor wants you to believe you need 8 gig of Vram to use it's high detail textures. Funny story, I can pull it off with my 4 gig of Vram card, play at max settings, and still record gameplay without dropping below 50 fps at 1080p resolution. As for Witcher 3, yes max settings will require an insane pc. But be real, it is releasing on Xbox One and PS4. You don't "require" a top of the line PC to play it. -
I want to explore what's possible. See if certain concepts work. I feel like with the current structure, I can't develop a well rounded playstyle before I hit the level cap. The level cap is going to take a while to reach, and then you only have access to six abilities and six talents. That feels on the light side to me. I feel you but there is no change even if you do it as OP suggests. In your example it is still 12 choices, just now you could have 12 abilities or 12 talents or any combination there of which probably will lead to a less balanced character than just splitting them up. I do agree we need more talents and some classes are a little light on the abilities side.

Next PAX Panel
Karkarov replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Just show some new maps, nothing story specific, maybe show off the crafting a bit, perhaps a new backer tavern? Main thing is have fun with it and just show off how much you love the game itself. At the end maybe a brief like slide show giving some details on some of the companions with some concept art etc. Maybe hold a few really cool ones back too. -
Poll: Should there be a penalty for being knocked out?
Karkarov replied to Namutree's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
*edit since when has - _ - been a "sleep" smiley???? Even if they do "get up" when they run out of health a light wind will knock them down as any damage at all would put them back at 0 health since health can not be healed by anything other than resting. So there is no reason to put any kind of penalty on running out of health beyond the fact that if they do get back up at all (depends on settings 0 health can be good old fashioned death) they will have no health to begin with and will fall down like a house of cards. I guess the weird ass justification would be to prevent you from "death death" since if you keep full stam you would die from loss of health before you ran out of stam. Testing it today I did find this to be the current way it works and it is in a word, stupid. Why I never noticed before is easy, I never let anyone run out of health . Running out of health should simply leave you with an unconscious party member, or again settings, a dead body. Not some useless ass tool who basically has to stay out of combat or die for real. -
Path of the Damned not rewarding enough
Karkarov replied to ctn2003's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Easy/normal/hard is more about fun for the player as some people get bored if a game is too easy. For example in the recent Dragon Age Inquisition I played it on the highest difficulty and trust me most of the complaints it's combat had came from people playing it on normal or lower. If you are just in it for the story and the characters though and don't find challenge to be more fun for you then don't play on the higher difficulties because they don't work for you are a person. Personally I plan to play on Normal with Expert mode on. I will do hard eventually, but path of the damned? No thanks, that is there purely for the grognard players who want to "beat" a game and care more about the mechanics than they do the actual game. -
Sounds cool on paper and I know what you are going for but it is not something they should do. It either results in OP characters who have only the best of the best of everything or in characters who suck cause the person making them ignored key picks and went all over the place. The system as it exists now prevents out right grognarding and helps protect people from making truly suck tastic builds.
-
Honestly if it is at all possible I think they should code it so the "hide" options are basically gone when the solid UI is in use aside from maybe the main menu buttons. Even then that would just be so the grogs can expand the combat log further.

You should be good to go, just jump in with the next backer beta release if you have access to it. Like Junta said official release is march 26th 2015 and it isn't getting pushed back again. Once the final Backer Beta hits though tons of basically final info should be available. I know I will do a final stats analysis vid myself and possibly more. Main points class wise to be aware of.... Druids/Chanters are OP, Rangers suck, and Barbarians are mediocre plus despite being tanks aren't all that good at it. Everyone else is varying degrees of okay and or pretty much where they should be. Fair warning the forums as expected have turned mostly negative and not very many consistent long term posters actually have tons nice to say about the game and mostly spend their time bitching about things they want changed even though they know the game is pretty much done now and nothing of any significance is getting altered from here to release. There are some good threads on mods though that you may want to take a look at just be wary of possible spoilers. Here are some links to them. http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/69199-possible-spoilers-modding-thread-a-simple-mod-and-console-commands/ http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/69964-the-pe-ie-mod-thread-draggable-ui-now-available/ Also not to took my own horn but if you care about how to make a custom portrait check out the sticky threads. Also the stickies are probably your safest way to achieve a general "catch up". Final thing..... Ignore anything Nipsen posts. Just trust me on that one.

Poll: Should there be a penalty for being knocked out?
Karkarov replied to Namutree's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Not exactly. When you run out of health you are out period until you rest, depending on challenge setting anyway cause if you are on a higher challenge it actually means your character is perma dead. Maiming is healed by resting just like being out of health. Unless they decided to remove the maiming system. Meanwhile... That is a pretty fair point. -
Poll: Should there be a penalty for being knocked out?
Karkarov replied to Namutree's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
There technically is a penalty. I believe there is a chance (depending on the challenge setting you play on) that you can become "maimed" until you get a rest in which basically gives you a major stat penalty.
