Which dev should PLAY at PAX East
Leferd replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'm cool with Cain. See how he handles the pressure of living up to his legions of fanbois. Or for something completely different, GSG. It'd be a different dynamic and she seems cool and has a good sense of humor about things --especially after the Kickstarter wrap party. -
Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut) is my favorite movie. Totally agree. They content they cut for the theatrical release turned a good movie into a great one. It just cannot be overstated just how beautifully shot this film is. Any director --especially George Lucas could take notes on storyboarding from Ridley Scott. This is especially true for a Star Wars film.

It's not cool, it's cold as ice being a cipher. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yw8_ZZviedI Well played sir. Signed, Leferd --Pariah of the Obsidian Order -
Speaking of former Lucas properties... http://www.aintitcool.com/node/70166 Chris Pratt as the new Indy? I can see that. He's been good in everything I've seen him in.

Maybe showcase just how cool it is to play a cipher. See some of their unique dialogue options as well as their combat abilities. -

I'd like to see some actual roleplaying scenarios with consequences. Obviously it shouldn't be critical path, but atleast a good example of repercussions of your choices. Maybe some additional cool scripted interactions. -
Which reminds me that tonight is Tacos Tuesday at my local taqueria! Mmm...carnitas....

True. Not too many historical epics in the last few years. That said, as a film I don't think it's artistically better than Lawremce of Arabia (coincidentally I'm actually reading through Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom) but it's more entertaining than both Ben Hur and Spartacus (Kubrick notwithstanding). The cinematography and writing of Kingdom of Heaven is just sublime.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/trinity-gaming-performance,3304.html It's a couple years old but this compares the performances of the Intel and AMD integrated chips. Can't comment directly on the performance of the Intel but the AMD APU's works very well for me for Eternity. Intel's benchmark performance lags behind. Still, the Intel should work just find for you based on your CPU and memory.

Apologies to Obsidian

Then I apologize most profusely for the one (couple?) times I reported someone whose only crime is that I accidently pressed and confirmed the report function. I'll just own up and say that my fingers are too big for a tablet and smartphone. Thanks Obama. -
Predictions are probabilistic and therefore sometimes inaccurate-- we should stop predicting!! Anyhow, impact here in the DC area was minimal. (As predicted.) I swept about an inch and a half's worth of snow off the driveway. Good to know. Now I don't feel guilty for not bothering to check up on my brother in Arlington.

Yep. Kingdom of Heaven was a flop in the US --making only $47m against a $130m budget. But it was more popular internationally, taking in $211m. Part of the reason for the flop was due to the cuts instituted by the studio for the theatrical release --pretty much lobotimizing any semblance of a well crafted story and character development for key characters. Turning an intelligent epic film about the nature of religion and personal redemption against the backdrop of the Crusades into an action flick with swords and chainmail pitting Christians against Muslims. The Director's Cut is a completely different movie. I'd kinda compare it to KotOR 2 in some ways.

Apologies to Obsidian

One major caveat is that I would rather that these boards not be heavily moderated. I'm pretty ambivalent about the pretty women thread, but I run on the side of freedoms, and would rather not see closures of such threads. But the writing is on the wall in that we may start to see stronger moderation --especially with all this talk of expected new waves of posters. Understood that these are Obsidian's forums and their rules as enforced by Fio and crew. But Indira's rule proposals --though coming from a good place, is still a bit constricting. There should be leeway for mild trolling and busting of chops when deserved. I'd rather it not go too much in the way of the old Bio boards in terms of policing. -

http://www.xp4t.com/interview-with-the-devs-chris-avellone/ Interesting conversation all around regarding the video game writing process. Towards the end, MCA discusses two of the companions he concepted - Durance (Priest of Magran) and The Grieving Mother (Cipher). Excerpted below: JONAS: Any particular design ideas or concepts that you’re obsessed with right now? Anything you’re particularly excited about in one of your current projects, or particularly determined to find a way to use in a future project? (I promise I won’t steal it, we probably don’t have the budget for it anyway.) CHRIS: A few, I suppose. At a high level, this may be shooting myself in the foot, but I’ve become increasingly interested in narratives without words, especially after New Vegas (where prop placement told better stories, imo). At a specific level, in Eternity, the original premise of the companions I wrote (Durance and the Grieving Mother) was unpeeling the layers and discovering what they were at the core – unpeeling these layers involved slipping stealthily into their unconscious, a dungeon made out of their memories. There, the player could go through an adventure game-like series of interactions, exploring their memories using psychological items important to both your character and to them as emotional keys to thread your way through the memories – but carefully, without revealing your presence. The memory dungeon was to uncover their shared history, how it impacted you, and the core of who they were as people. And their core was pretty unpleasant. Both of them were very bad, very weak people, committing not only violations on each other, but on the player as well. When faced with the discovery that your allies, even if they fiercely support you and fight for a larger cause, have some pretty horrid faults, what do you do? Do you pass sentence? Do you forgive? Do you assist them to reach an understanding? And what I found more interesting with the spiritual physics in the Eternity world is that a death sentence isn’t a sentence – killing someone actually sets a soul free to move on to the next generation. So if you intend to punish someone in a world like that, either out of revenge or to correct their behavior, how do you do it when execution is not an answer? The elements above got stripped out of the companions in the end, so I’m happy to share it here (and I may re-examine it in the future). Overall, I thought they raised interesting questions for the player to chew on, and it was interesting to explore those themes, as most game narratives and franchises wouldn’t allow for such examinations – still, Eternity was intended to be a more personal project for Obsidian where we can stretch our narrative legs more, both in structure and themes. Chris had revealed this bit of info before, but went more in depth. This was ultimately cut due to what I'm gathering was lack of resources and not being a primary gameplay driver. Cool idea and I hope it is eventually pursued in future projects --or even the expansion. Now before this devolves into a Josh is the Antichrist of FUN for chopping this idea, lets try to be atlea---Who am I kidding?? Have at it.

I don't consider grognard to have negative connotations. To me it's a term for wargamers or those who are tactical combat enthusiasts. I'd like to consider myself one --though albeit at the JV level. -

Totally, the best. Helping others, sharing ... if Green Shirt Girl needs help crossing Alton Parkway or ordering sushi, I am totally available. Ponders fine line as to whether ManifestedISO is a creepy misogynistic nerd or whether he's a smooth playa. Leaning towards he got game. Lols.
