I didn't even notice that you hadn't even put the 2 there to be honest, as it was pretty clear what you meant. Wait, so Ciphers are NOT meant to be able to check the past lives of souls? That means the whole soul pedigree thing isn't a thing? The confusion between ciphers and watchers has been one of the things that put me off playing a cipher, since its kinda like "Wait, so which of this is or isn't typical cipher stuff?"

Romance
FlintlockJazz replied to Skyleaf's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Considering I have had to kill off characters because I found myself forced into a romance, that would be grand! :D That's a little extreme. What romance were you forced into? Ashley, apparently just talking to people is enough to get people wanting my Shepard-meat, had to Virmire her to keep her off me. Same thing happened with Liara too in another playthrough, and since you can't Virmire her she ended up in my cabin even though I had already pretty much told her to bugger off outside the lockers and only just managed to avoid being forced to feed her my meat, and even then the game considered that I had 'romanced' her... -

Obsidian made the mistake of adding some anime vibes to their latest companion concept, and it emboldened the weeaboos to crawl out of the woodwork and infest the Pillars fan community with anime culture. I recommend fumigation. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile. She isn’t even like this yet Should I be relieved that my work proxy is blocking that image?

It's kind of funny because that outfit is something a young English lord would have worn back in the day. Actually, I think the two of you may have hit on the issue: Japanese anime likes to use Western Renaissance garb, even when it is not a Western Renaissance. They have a total thing for it. So, by dressing in Western Renaissance but with white hair, she ironically looks anime! Is this an example of cultural appropriation by the Japanese? Should we be offended and be protesting against the use of Western culture in Japanese media??!

Finished the Witcher 3 and Heart of Stone but hard drive died a death before finishing Blood and Wine and wound up starting from scratch again. Never knew there was a quest with a character that was an obvious homage to Bobba Fett in it the first time. Sad that I did not kill him like I wanted to, fooking Fett and his overratedness...

I, for one, seriosuly don't get these anime vibes at all. And because of this thread now I sit re-reading Ydwin's concept and I stare at her art, in an attempt to find such. Am having difficulties with it, so some of you are just probably being paranoid. *drops microphone* *picks up microphone* I agree with you somewhat. I think what people are picking up on is that she is meant to be both cute and creepy, but her picture doesn't show the creepiness and actually looks sassy, so people are probably assuming the 'creepy cute' is going to be like in anime, where they usually have the character act wacky while looking cute. I really think they should make her appearance off-putting in some way, like really gaunt or something, so that when she acts cute it just looks wrong or something. Actually the biggest worry I have with her is that she ends up like Liara, which I can see happening. I DETEST Liara, I found her to be the most annoying character in that game (and considering that most of the characters in that game annoyed me to various degrees, that's an accomplishment). Just talking to her made me want to put needles in my head. If she ends up like Liara then when I get the game I will kill her so hard that Liara herself will die despite being in a totally different game! I'm sure she won't though, Obsidian are better than that and concept is actually different.

Random Noob Questions

1. Yes. The Dyrwood (where the game is set) was settled by the Aedyr Empire, you have the Vailian Republics to the south which was settled by Old Vailia, Readceras to the north which the Dyrwood has just recently had a war with, and other places that are mentioned but not directly tied to the Dyrwood, which you can choose your character to come from, such as The White that Wends, Rauatai, the Ixamitly Plains, Deadfire Archipelago (which is going to be the setting for the sequel). 2. I'd say its more friendly to first time player (Baldur's Gate assumed an understanding of D&D 2nd edition that I don't think was easy for people who never played it to understand), but has more depth in character creation, more like 3rd edition D&D what with the talents and abilities. You'll get some saying that it is too easy etc but I think it hits about right. 3. Kinda inbetween I say. You get to choose from a list where your character comes from and a background such as Hunter or Scholar (some backgrounds are restricted by place or origin, for instance you can only choose Explorer if your character is from the Deadfire Islands, the Living Lands, or the White that Wends). 4. Godlikes are called such because they have certain qualities associated with certain gods and are believed to have been blessed by the gods (since they seem to spontaneously appear, born from normal parents, and are not actually descended from the gods, in fact most are sterile), but otherwise are like any other Folk. Its not even clear if the gods actually do have anything to do with them, people just seem to assume that they do and the gods nod along. 5. Multiclassing is not possible in Pillars (though it will be in the sequel), however it is more open to build classes like that. Weapons and armour are not restricted by class, so you can build a Wizard as more of a frontliner: slap armour on them, learn buffing spells and stick a sword in their hand, and take the appropriate talents to make them more survivable. Wizard tanks are actually quite popular. If you want to stick to the ligher armours then I would suggest taking a shield as well, but I don't personally use wizards like that, prefering the classical approach, so take my suggestions with a grain of salt and listen to the ones who do build them like that more. -
With the discovery that Alchemy is going to be a skill in Pillars 2 and that it will work with explosives, I have decided that I am going to do a Pillars 1 playthrough with a character that would use such skills (well actually I was already going to do it, this just confirmed it). Naturally the Scientist background is a given, but what class? A Cipher could work, they also got Lore and Mechanics (the two skills you get from Scientist), and fits well considering one of the choices for Scientist is that you used it to solve crimes (making you a detective), plus you got characters like Galvino who are similar in concept, though he's more animancer than alchemist. Rogue, actually, works well too in concept, I can easily imagine the Rogue skillset fitting for scholarly sorts actually, and fits well again the detective side of things. Chanter too, in a Kana-esque way. Wizard and Druid of course works, though is perhaps a bit too obvious, a bit too stereotypical. Ranger as a Witcher type maybe. Paladin and Barbarian I don't see being a good fit conceptually. Priest, Fighter and Monk could work but are kinda meh, feels more of a side thing for them. I am currently leaning more to Cipher at the moment, though a large part of that is simply because I don't really play Ciphers much anyway and want to correct that. What do YOU think the class of a crazy bomber type would be?

Speak for yourself, many of us actually like those sidekick concepts and see it as the best chance we get for them. Personally I would rather see them drop Ydwin and do the dwarf as the 8th companion instead but I'm sure you wouldn't like that. I would like it! Just make that dwarf an animancer. To be honest Pillars of Eternity really needs a good dwarf... Sagani was so... dull. That would be interesting actually, I like it! Kinda feel like Galvino should have been a dwarf.

Personally I have no issues with cogs, always liked them since learning about them from The Patrician game back when I was a kid, but I think a caravel would have been perfect: they are around the right time period but also looked piratey (they were kind of the first of those type of ships), very nice looking ships in fact, they are small but also very seaworthy, and are often overlooked in gaming for more known ships like sloops.
