WorstUsernameEver replied to poetic obsidian's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Uhm.. just rechecked the forum. No one said the devs have to post here. -

The Dark Spire didn't have spikey hair. And it's not their fault if western developers completely dropped the ball. -

But does it have cRPG potential? CRPG = Computer Role Playing Games ? Then the answer should be obvious. Seriously, though, western developers for RPGs have ignored the DS excluding Bioware's rather weak attempt with the Sonic franchise. There is a lot of potential though, and maybe we'll get a couple of old-school yet innovative dungeon crawlers by Atlus, who knows. -

Seconded. Don't honestly care much for half-assed sequels to great franchises, but the console has potential for great titles nonetheless. -

This new Zelda actually.. looks pretty good. -
Games you are looking forward to.

You know what? Those screenshots are interesting. Mmmh.. I'll search a bit of info about the first, it's been a lot of time since I've played my last strategy game. -
Now that I think about it.. that perk that raises perception with glasses on would kinda useless in Fallout 3, since perception isn't that good anyway and since glasses would mean less DR (and DT? does a helmet have a separate DT or it just adds to the armor by the way? in Fallout 1/2 we didn't have this problem). I'm kinda curious, have they overhauled perception too? Made it tie to something else, like maybe range, or accuracy?

YEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. The game keeps sounding better and better.

Except that Alpha Protocol, being a game set in a realistic modern day setting (and using that as a selling point nonetheless!) can't really use that kind of explanations. As for your Jason Bourne/Jack Bauer examples, they are both in the realm of verisimilitude. Are they plausible? Not much. But they're not impossible. A punk chick taking 8 headshots to die is, and that, I fear, creates a disconnect between the player and the game, the setting and the mechanics. You may disagree, but Obsidian should probably take note of this kind of opinions, since it's not just mine, and since it seems to be one of the point that kinda killed Alpha Protocol in some reviews. Note that I'm not a member of the 'let's take out stats' crowd. On the contrary, I feel that the challenge the designer face in this kind of hybrid is to make stats important while not creating this kind of disconnect. Is it hard? A lot. But if they want to pursue the action-rpg road they must be prepared to accept this kind of challenge.

Yes, it is. Especially in real time first person CRPGs. As a old skool player, I can accpet the fact that I have to use 200 bullets to kill corporate drone, but players in general nowadays find it totally retarded. To apply dragon, supermutant or ultimate-robo-o-doom boss fight mechanics to characters like in Alpha Protocol, is a grade A design fumble. I agree on that. Problem is, same thing happened with Fallout 3 and strangely enough reviews were all positive. At least if you (meaning 'reviewer' not you ) criticize something you should do it in every review you're doing, not just the game without corporation backing. Yeah, let's critizize every game ever made! That's gonna help? Also, with that logic there would be only ONE right design choice eliminating every creativity from the beginning. Not to mention said design choice would be highly debatable. You seem to have misunderstood but.. whatever.

Where are the dev responses ?
WorstUsernameEver replied to poetic obsidian's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
I think it's an overall change in the way the gaming industry works. All info now comes strictly through official PR channels (and I sort of can see why, I mean at last year's e3 the Bioware Doctors let out that ME2 was on 2 discs and the amount of squad members etc... few people caught on and it was really spun by the respective PR departments into "they were talking metaphorically"). Iz big biznezz, and the information flow (apparently) needs to tightly controlled. No more friendly chats with the rabid, preordering fan(boy)s. I blame Bobby Kotick. To be honest, I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the industry changing. I was reading the 'Darth Nuke debate-thing' when Oner linked it today, and well... near the end of the thread there was already one guy complaining about lack of communication with the devs. 5 (6? I don't remember the date ) years ago. This has more to do with the fact that there are about a couple of Obsidian devs that interact on this forum on a regular basis, J.E. Sawyer, Joseph Bullock, Alvin Nelson, Nathaniel Chapman and uhm.. I hope I'm not forgetting anyone. Note also that a lot of devs involved in Fallout : New Vegas post on the Bethsoft forums on a more or less regular basis, so it has more to do with this forum than devs posting in general.. -

Wow. Just ... wow. -
So it's Alpha Protocol IN SPACE? Seriously, tried the demo yesterday.. talk about bad first impressions. Maybe it was because I was tired, but.. the game begins with unskippable cutscenes and tutorials? Really? I found the beginning of the first game much much better... Also, I had some problems with taking cover, but they'll probably disappear when I get used to the control system.. it certainly feels much more like a TPS now, but I have to play some real missions before I can say if it's done well. Oh, and I encountered my first bug! I don't know what version of the game the demo is based on but while I was trying to walk in a room I ended up walking.. on air.. for uhm.. no reason whatsoever?

Anything noteworthy? After watching part of the Microsoft presentation I felt violated. It was just that bad. -
A meh match honestly. And Camoranesi confirmed he's a ****. Really. He is.

And what makes you think it would be something like FF13? Story-driven game aren't necessarily railroad-y and full of non-interactive cutscenes.

Haven't you been following the industry these last years Morgoth? THAT'S the stuff they want to push. That's the stuff people buy more, so that's understandable. -

Pretty much... it was certainly looking more like an action game than a stealth anyway. -
Mass Effect 2 demo released. Probably everyone of you as either already bought the game or is skipping it, but I'm downloading it right now. It'll put things in perspective as to when I should buy this game (I doubt the game can be so bad that I don't want to get it ) and whether reducing the RPG-ness of the combat was a good or a bad thing.

Yeah, the OC was as bad as Bioware gets.. never really understood what happened, they must have had some problems during development. There were a couple of fun side quests, and that's about it. As for the two add-ons, honestly, opinions vary, and the first is generally reputed to be worse than the second (Hordes) but I still enjoyed them. Betraying your allies (convinced that you've been announced as their hero by a prophecy no less!) mid campaign to help a drow queen was great fun, even if it didn't mean anything in the end (pure railroading leads you to the same end chapter anyway).
