  1. Honestly, I don't think the NWN2 toolset was that bad, it's just freaking hard to build stuff that isn't tile-based and make it look decent. Or maybe that's just for me...
  2. Honestly, I don't get the complaints about the campaign (other than the fact it was underperforming, which I don't understand.) I feel like they gave me the exact sorts of information I would want. I guess I'm just not the typical consumer/backer.
  3. Well, the upshot is they are listening. He didn't give away much info but at least they are listening. I guess bitching might serve some purpose after all. Honestly, that sounds like standard corporate "We're listening! Really!" talk, without any real intentions to do anything about it other than hopefully assuage customers long enough to trick them into buying the product/service. Basically, I'll believe it when I see it.
  4. You know, if this wasn't branded as a D&D product, I'd probably ignore it until it was sub $10 on a Steam sale. As it is a D&D product, I'm severely annoyed and disappointed. Also, why always the Sword Coast? I mean, I hate most of the Forgotten Realms (the Moonshaes are cool, but don't really fit in with the rest of the realms at all), but the Sword Coast is the most boring, overused part of the Forgotten Realms.
  5. Every new update makes me really like what they're showing for the rules system. It looks really interesting, to the point that I'd kind of like a copy of the PnP rules.
  6. You're assuming if they fail they will come back. It's not entirely uncommon in my experience for a failed kickstarter to kill a project altogether.
  7. I wouldn't worry about whether it is going to fund or not when deciding whether to put money down as the worst that can happen there is that funding fails and you don't get charged a cent, same as if there had never been a kickstarter. That happened to me with the Fresh3D/ Outcast KS. Some of the crowdfunding sites have flexible funding where partial funding will be accepted, but KS doesn't. If you think it looks good and want to put money down do so, if you don't don't. Don't worry about whether it funds, there really isn't much at all that any single person can do to influence that unless your last name is Persson. I know. My worry about it not getting funded had nothing to do with my pledging, but just a general worry that the campaign would fail and the game wouldn't end up getting made. Here's hoping.
  8. I'm sure all these "Area loot is the devil!" types were loved by their DM's when they were individually looting every body after a fight. "I loot the first kobold! Then, I loot the second kobold!" Sigh.
  9. I call the Rainbow Bridge.
  10. Gotta be honest, the video most of the way sold me (it reminded me of ToEE, and I've been jonesing for a ToEE-like game) and the devs assuring me there would be good non-caster combat options (I asked them a question and they answered within a few hours.) Now I'm just worried it won't get funded...
  11. I finally talked myself into picking up Defense Grid 2, since it was 70% off. Finished the campaign with all gold medals (it's sad that a Tower Defense game can have a better story than many of the games out there, though DG1 story was better than DG2) and did one Grinder round, but only got a silver medal. It's good, but I think it's somehow missing some of the charm from Defense Grid 1. Still looking forward to any DLC/sequel, as I want to see the continuation of the story.
  12. This. The individual items don't concern, I just think the tactic is awful. If it was something I'd really been dying for it wouldn't have stopped me from pledging, but as an on-the-fence person, it's a real turnoff.
  13. Yeah, the Kickstarter-only items that you only get if you pledged enough were sufficient to get me not to pledge. Not that I was that tempted (as I didn't like Ultima Underworld, due to the combat mechanics) but I might have pledged at a low level just to support more old-school games getting made.
  14. Simple random enemy ambushes are kind of silly. The ones in BG (which I'm currently replaying) are largely pointless. They're not even remotely dangerous, and serve only to add a couple clicks to traveling. I might find them immersive if they were dependent on party composition/skills, but since they're not, they serve no purpose other than to add a couple loading screens (well, there's minor loot as well.) Encounters that occur randomly but are one off unique events, on the other hand, are something I would enjoy seeing.
  15. It would seem better to just make the characters immortal, so as not to give an incorrect impression of the game. It's mostly just a matter of adherence to the source material, to me. As was said, it seems silly to make a "D&D" game that has nothing to do with the actual D&D mechanics. It seems like they just want to make a Forgotten Realms game, which honestly doesn't appeal to me at all (as it appears 5E Forgotten Realms returns to the boring cliche Realms from 3.X and earlier.)
  16. I think it's largely because we're finally getting another D&D game, but it doesn't seem to have much of anything to do with D&D mechanically. Seems similar to Neverwinter, in that it's a veneer of D&D over non-D&D mechanics (seriously, 267 HP wizard?) Also, that whole "DM's need to earn threat to perform actions in the game, and everyone can see the DM cursor as a wisp!" thing seems really, really off to me.
  17. While the character import/export tool seems kind of silly to me, I was unaware of TSI and Seven Dragon Saga previously. I'll have to keep an eye out (the press release claims there's a Kickstarter launched today, but that appears to be untrue.)
  18. You're assuming everyone cares about being in shape. There are people who don't care, even when they know the medical consequences.
  19. Yeah, like I said, it's Deathtrike II and Whirlwind Attack II that really make me wonder (both from the dwarf character.) Actually, I'm not a huge fan, and it's mostly because of not using the PnP ruleset, or at least something that could be played with pencil and paper (vampires with guns isn't really my thing, either.)
  20. Yeah, I'm just saying, if you go back far enough, it gets to the point where the UIs are more often than not hard to deal with, but I get that it was a limitation of the time (heck, back in the day, nobody I knew had a mouse.) As for playing in a window...I realize people do it, but I can't stand it.
  21. I suppose it's somewhat like Empower, but not anywhere near as good. I don't recall perfectly (and I didn't read all the spell descriptions because the spell section of the PH is really long in all versions and terribly formatted in the 5E PH), but I seem to recall that Fireball, for example, was 5d6 +1d6 per spell level (so level 8 spell for a 10d6 Fireball.) They really gimped how powerful spells were, to an even further extent then I would have liked. Anyway, looking through the screenshots (which I hadn't previously) I also see Deathstrike II and Whirlwind Attack II, so I'd say it's actually very likely that guy is right.
  22. The point isn't whether cooldowns are bad per se or anything. The point is, most of us are excited by this because we want a real D&D game. (And let's leave out the pointless OMFG POE SUX idiocy, because whether POE sux or rulz we'd still want an actual D&D game too.) Well, they're being coy about the details so far, but I'm not going to get my hopes up (or down) just yet. That guy is apparently not familiar with 5E D&D. While I can't recall exactly what Ray of Frost is classified as in 5E (there are some cantrips that are outside of the regular spell progression, i.e. infinite cast...I don't actually own the books, but read through my nephews copy), spells don't level up damage with character level in 5E, but instead dependent on what level spell slot you use for them. For example, in order to have a magic missile equal to a 2E/3.X magic missile from a 9th level caster (5 missiles), you have to cast it from a 3rd level spell slot (which I can't imagine anyone ever doing.) It's entirely possible that Ray of Frost II is simply Ray of Frost put into a 1 level higher spell slot. I'm not saying that's definitely the case, but I certainly see it as a possibility (and I say this not as a defender of this game, but as someone disappointed in what it appears we're getting when we finally get a new D&D game.) Edit: All that said, it's entirely possible the guy is right. And while I personally dislike the god-like caster/packmule non-caster paradigm of non-4E versions of D&D, if I'm going to play a D&D game, I'd like it to pay more than lip service to the ruleset.
  23. Sure, but I'm talking like even older games, like the original Bard's Tale where you have to enter 3 letter codes for every spell in the game to cast them. That sort of thing is just far too annoying for me to put up with, particularly when I don't have original manuals or the like that I can have sitting open in front of me. Stuff like Ultima Underworld isn't a problem at all, besides being a bit clunky. I also miss tooltips, since a lot of the time the icons aren't all that informative.
  24. It really depends on the context. In understanding gaming, certainly. There are definitely games that I think everyone should at least try, even if they only play them for an hour or so. In the grand scheme of things, however...pretty irrelevant. Also, the biggest improvements in games over the years, to me, has got to be UI. There are so many old games (even ones I loved as a kid) that I try to go back and play, and the old UIs just kill it for me (no, I don't want to memorize the codes for dozens of spells, Bard's Tale!)
